If I remember right, L-19 bolts are susceptable to hydrogen embrittlement which can be caused by touching them with bare skin, being in weather or being plated or coated might wanna check into that lol

You just corrupted the strength of that L19 stud. Read the packaging it literally says do not touch with bare hands they are extremely susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement.

Those marks in the cylinders are pretty normal for K series. As long as you can’t feel them or hang a nail on it. I see those marks on 95% of the ones I take apart.

Nice work, yea can't touch those studs. FYI 75mm turbine on g42 + 1.28 open t4 housing is going to lag like no tomorrow. Unless you're planning on making 1100+whp id suggest getting the 1.00 housing when you can

The marks on the top of the cylinder like that are classic giveaway for an engine that was knocking. Run a thick oil in it and drop the timing and send it.

After talking to Steve at Mspek he said he prefers to go a little more loose than what is recommended as the "minimum clearance" on the sheet. Thinking it could have gotten hot and swelled a bit.

That rocking piston is VERY disconcerting. Cast piston-to-wall in my memory is something around .003" (off the top of my head) and forged maybe double that (.006") I can't imagine it's that low rocking like that. Love this project but I also hope you aren't using 'old school' dead-dinosaur oil and are using something fully-synthetic such as Royal Purple. You can see from the scoring that you really need the extra film strength it offers. Good luck love this project because I'm old and I drive a Civic but really looking forward to the C10....

little smoke on start and fades away after 5 mins? possibly like you hinted, bad piston to wall clearance, worn rings, cracked ring. Once it heats up she gets nice and tight and seals up, stopping the oil bypassing the rings, stopping the smoking, im no mechanic but am I onto something?
