Let's surmise this entire nearly 16 minute video. They're similar platforms so the only thing a "modifier" cares about is power to weight ratio. They assume same motor power potential so the only way to change the power to weight ratio is weight. Since GR Yaris is lighter, they recommend the GR Yaris. That's all there is in this vid.

The final drive ratios are known, you went through all this math to repeatedly say the same thing about the power to weight, should have used some of that math to compare what the final drive might affect. The engineer said this was done specifically to counter the additional weight, should have done calculations to see what difference it makes. Engine differences are fairly small, both are forged, but the Corolla the engineer has said the piston metal is stronger. And they've improved the piston oiling. Nothing about springs, nothing about turbo size. Just more boost and improved exhaust back pressure.

The GR Yaris is always going to have the weight advantage over the GR Corolla; it's less car, but when you went into "weight reduction" calculations, you assumed the same weight would come out of both cars, but there is going to be more weight stripped out of the corolla interior; there is just more of it, as it is more car. There is still going to be a significant weight difference between the two in favor of the Yaris, but it felt worth mentioning. The Corolla has an additional ~1.8in/4.6cm of track width, as well as a longer wheelbase, which will result in higher lateral G's and increased high speed stability, again worth noting if you're doing something besides drag racing. HOWEVER - I'm looking for one (GR Corolla as I live in North America) as a "stock" until the warranty is up, then "lightly modified" daily, that I can haul my kids around in, I will be dumping a RWD IS350 for it, once I can get the one I want (Circuit edition in red, wish we got the neptune/agean/voodoo blue as an option). The GR Corolla makes more sense in our market, where a two door Yaris would have to compete with similarly priced V8 monsters (mustangs, camaros, challengers), the four door can come in as the practical performance vehicle (that isn't another CUV). I used to own a 2006 WRX wagon, and it was practical performance at the time, and accepted mods reasonably well. I'd wonder how a Golf R would stack up against a GR Yaris; more weight for sure, but a built EA888 currently has much higher limits (partially due to the existing extensive aftermarket).
@binskee6772 жыл бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqPPf2WkptZsaMU this is how they compare. It depends on the track who is faster or not. regarding weight, it would make a couple of kilos i agree but the difference wouldn't be too large. The corolla is bigger yes but it will not even out the higher weight. The Yaris already has a wheelbase of a 911 and the track width of a E92 M3 and is considered a traction monster in the twisties.

It comes down to the application, who's going to need what and how much each would sell. I think it's a smart move to give the US a corolla instead of a yaris because it'll sell much better. In Europe it's the opposite where marketing a performance 5-door Corolla makes less sense, because it'd be competing with the likes of the Golf R on its home turf. @@alexflavoie would fit no problems ,there's actually quite a lot of room in the corolla engine bays, the current fwd corolla has a 1.8 or 2L 4 (not sure which) but it's dimensions would be very close to the Camry 2.4 (they're the same series engine just different capacity), either way it'd fit fine , the engine bays are deceivingly roomy, a Camry engine bay actually has tons of room, could fit a g45 in there no worries lol Seen 3sgte's stuffed into starlets and they're engine bays are tiny in comparison so if they can do that a 2.4 into a corolla is piss easy. On that though they could've just used the current corolla 1.8/2L and re engineered it slightly to be a turbo engine no problems. Toyota missed an opportunity there and being u can buy a golf or a Merc turbo 4 cyl for the same money. In case your unaware these 3cyls are extremely high strung from the factory, they run like 28/30psi stock ,a 4 could make the same power on 12/14psi which 1 makes it less stressed and 2 more potential for hp gains. 👍

The pistons and exhaust valves in the GR Corolla are also a different, stronger alloy, as part of the engine being designed for a higher HP output. Also, the exhaust valves are larger, with stiffer valve springs. They are not identical engines. And the GR Corolla, if you are looking from a tuning perspective, might be the more reliable after mods of the two *because* of those differences, and possibly even handle higher power more safely.
@MotiveVideo2 жыл бұрын
They’re being upgraded for an extra 20kW. Our reports is exhaust valves are new material, not larger, and exhaust valves and pistons are not a weak point at 500hp anyway Valve spring upgrade for extra 2psi isnt necessarily going to handle the 35+psi we throw either, so probably still need upgrading

Isn't the GR Corolla going to have more tuning headroom than the GR Yaris because of the thickened cylinder walls (mentioned by Toyota in an interview I saw), so the actual difference in power:weight is going to be mute when pushed to the limits? Also, you'd be able to strip out more weight from the Corolla than the Yaris as the interior pieces are larger, so that calculation would require some adjustment. I'd still assume it'd favour the Yaris prior to the potential tuning headroom though.

But he didnt talk about the upgrades to the g16 engine in the corolla over the base yaris version like better valvetrain and pistons. We still dont know if toyota addressed issues with the head studs and headgasket on the corolla too so it might be able to make more power easier so the gap between the two might be closer and corolla might be easier to make power

Stronger internals dont make an engine more power. Same as an intercooler doesnt make more power. They simply allow more of a threshold to make or power. Love these videos. With power to weight you do need to consider additional mass such as driver, this would make the cars a little closer. I also suspect a Corolla would have more mass that could be taken out than a Yaris (or at least the same proportion/%). When it comes to track work the Corolla also has a 45mm wider track than the GR Yaris.

I, for one, am happy we're getting the corolla, and don't care overly much about the minor differences it'll have with the yaris. The GR Corolla still looks like it will be the best hot hatch available in the US. I'll be trading in my '17 Manual TRD Off-Road Tacoma for it at the first available opportunity.

E.g. my 89 Commodore in it's current condition I could easily ask 10k for it even though 5 yrs ago I payed 650$ for it cause that's all they were worth and it's mint, 144,000klms on it, it's a rarer colour n trim one too so kinda lucked out on that one lol but yeah now it's valued at 10k but I don't care cause I'm never selling it cause I'll never afford another one if the price trends continue like they are, but in saying that the bubble will burst at some point especially when people just let go of their desire to own them and just buy new cars instead 🤔 Personally I'm waiting for mustangs to be a couple of grand and I'm going to stick pile em and store em away for 20 yrs lol with the advent of ev's they'll be worth a mint to collector's, I'd imagine ice vehicles will be quite a bit rarer in 20/30yrs 🤔
