Top notch review, guys. I just went from a 2008 STi to a 2024 Corolla GR (Premium), and while this is a somewhat unfair comparison because my beloved STi is well-tweaked to my taste, but 16 years old, and the Corolla is bone stock and new, and I still have about 500 break-in miles (and an oil change) before I will push the Corolla's engine much at all, at this early hour the Corolla is...*nearly* a STi. It's soooo close. And right now, for a manual AWD hot hatch suitable for back roads and daily driving in northern New England, especially under $45K, it's what there is. Toyota pretty much nailed this, more or less, and full marks for doing what Subaru chose not to. Yes, what I really want is my '08 STi new again, minus 16 winters of New England road salt, but the GR Corolla is what I have, and I plan to drive the hell out of it, and enjoy every minute. After lift springs. And a center console.

How I wish you guys had the Focus RS too in there for company today!! That's the OG rear overrun drift inducing hot hatch with pops and bangs!!
@ThomMurphy2 жыл бұрын
I imagine, the Focus RS, especially if it was the '18 with the LSD and on Cup 2 tires, likely would have been in a different class and taken away some of the shine from this group. Still, would have been interesting to see. Hopefully we'll see that video sometime in the future.

Wow, for whatever stupid reason I decided not to watch this video last week. This is by far the best GR Corolla review. You guys actually pushed it in conditions that were closer to reality, and not at 6k ft elevation on a track. Bravooooo Throttlehouse!!!!
@rovert942 жыл бұрын
I know it is old at this point, but I'd be curious to see how the Focus RS did around the track.

These cars are all just like the RS, but it does a lot better. They talking about over driving the rear, the RS is the king of that.

Crap? I’ve been looking for a hot hatch to daily and assumed the Corolla APEX or GR would be the best and now I have to consider the Golf R. Thanks Thomas and “I’m James”, also Carston. Love these lap times and drag races. Love the channels, I watch every episode on the main and Extra Throttle House for years now. Cheers!

This video is why I absolutely love driving manual transmission vehicles...... The control, the driver to car connection..... The stability..... I freaking love this channel and the way James handled that Corolla was beautiful

Would love to see a GR and a 6-speed XSE do a drag race just to show how much quicker the GR is

I would love to see just more of that type of drag race where they compare the various engines, like for instance, the Mazda 3 vs Mazda 3 turbo

The GR is about 2.5 seconds quicker to 60 don't ask questions you could easily Google

For a 20+ year old engine technology in the STi, to be fair, it did pretty well keeping up.
@FromPlsNerf2 жыл бұрын
I love my STI. She's definitely getting on in years and miles now...2017 73,000 miles. Great daily driver. Great project. I've done fuel pump, injectors, FPR, boost controller, stage 1 hd clutch, wheels and tires, brake pads and rotors, rear control arms and end links, intake, full catless turboback invidia r400 exhaust, etc etc etc. It's been a dream to own.

It was a monster 20 years ago and still pretty solid. The big changes in turbo motors are in the low range power and fuel economy. The real shame is subaru doesn't make the STI anymore. An STI with a FA24 tuned to 350hp ish would be amazing.

Yeah, i thinking it is way too tight to trade in . Considering i now have an extra few hp from Cobb stage 1+, and my suspension is now adjustable and pretty comfortable thanks to Cygnus performance comfort coilovers. And very importaant: I also still have buttons for radio and AC.

I got chills seeing/hearing “welcome to the few.” I have been waiting for the video forever! So pumped to see it. My ONLY gripe is that it wasn’t a DSG and the R comes with the worst tires of all recent tuner cars :(. The DSG on PS4’s would have beaten the GRC on the track. Not even a gripe really, it’s more that I just trust you guys over other reviewers to really push the cars to their best in an unbiased way and wished I could have seen it at its max potential. With that said, you mentioned those and joked about it so I can’t fault you for running a fair manual to manual race on factory rubber. You guys get better with every single video. It’s wonderful. Please do a DSG lap in the future though! Maybe against the Civic? I get manual vs manual but a case could be made for “best available vs best available.” The DSG truly is that much better. As to what I’d pick? Well it’s likely obvious. I own a 22R DSG :). Super stoked for future videos featuring the 8R, CTR, GRC, and EN.

The production on this video was awesome!! I can't help but feel extremely satisfied with my 2023 BRZ purchase at 30500 CAD. The GR corolla was the only real wildcard in my mind but not at the debut pricepoint IMO. As specced in this episode you could very nearly buy a base model BRZ/GR86 for summer AND a base model WRX for winter duty at nearly the same price.

@@klever6913 to my knowledge, no Subaru dealer in Ontario sell cars over sticker! I did have to wait about 6 months though for it to arrive.
@royshavrick2 жыл бұрын
@@klever6913 The markups on the GR86 and BRZ is around 5K US, 2-3K if you get it in a less popular color like Black (base trim sits around 29k). That is much cheaper than a Corolla GR even without a markup (which starts at 36k) and you know that will be marked up at least 5K.
