Seeing a lot of comments regarding the compass in this phone. The G5 Plus I tested has a magnetometer (compass) and it works just fine! It appears that the standard G5 (i.e., NOT the G5 Plus) lacks a compass. The G5 Plus *does* include it.

your review is what convinced me to buy the Moto G5 plus, and thanks for the mintsim ad. This phone has everything I've been waiting for. 64gb storage, charging port and audio port on same side, micro SD card storage is a plus, stock Android, and the price is still flagship killer like the OnePlus One I'm upgrading from. The Amazon discount was icing on the cake. I almost bought the OnePlus 3T, but wasn't ready to change all my cords to USB-C yet, and I've never used my Android pay. I could wait any longer for Nokia's smartphone to come out in US, plus it looks like they wanted to charge flagship prices anyways.

Correct me If I'm wrong, but a fair warning, Prime Discounted Phones comes with ads built into the lock screen and additional bloatware - that is where the discounted price come from

And even worse; you CANNOT unlock the bootloader or root the phone. Thus buying the prime discounted phone literally locks you in on being stuck on the original ROM/OS. That's the primary reason I bought a G4 directly from Motorola instead of Amazon. I gladly paid that extra $50 for that nagging feeling that Lenovo/Motorola wouldn't uphold release dates for the OS updates they promise.

1:09 - 2:06 Great way to nail it on that part. A budget phone must be honest with itself and shouldn't try to hard to be what it shouldn't be. Also, there are those who prefer the warmth of the premium plastics as well as the variable colors that can stand out from the samely metal. Extra credit if it's customizable and the back plate is replaceable, and even more so if the battery is easily replaceable! And another great, objective review as always! It's a shame that updates are getting slower since Lenovo bought Motorola. Could that also explain the choice of materials for this G5?

With solid devices like this G5+ on the market for its price point it makes me furious and feel like an absolute idiot knowing I paid $849 for my current 6S+.... And with the current trend of devices creeping into the $800 range. It's making devices like this G5+ REALLY appealing to me!

Hi MM, If you have the time could you answer a question for me? I still have the Moto X 2014 (I know its old), and actually I still enjoy it - Im a Motorola Guy. It does everything I need it to and I still love the design. However, my battery isnt what it used to be and I think its time to upgrade but Im not ready to shell out big bucks (I pay cash for everything). I came across this G5 Plus and thought I might be an inexpensive option. - My Question is this - Will I be downgrading in any way to the G5 Plus?

I'm indecisive as to whether to go with the honor 6x or moto G5 plus. I prefer the design and the screen on the 6x and the screen to body radio and I like the large screen. I also like the idea of the fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone. On the other hand I like the stock android experience and the software unlike the 6x where the software in that with the notification bar and the lack of a panel isn't as good as the moto g. The processor, ram and camera are pretty much on par. If I download the google now launcher on the 6x will I be able to get the same features and layout as I would on the G5 plus? And is the 6x getting the 7.0 or that emotion 5.0 update?

i am not a video editor not a director, but i am a real fan of your work. One thing i noticed about the top tech youtubes is that they show their face to much in their videos. examples unbox therapy, mkbhd, Austin, Jonathan and so on. maybe this is the key your channel needs to grow up. Mark John West - I would want Moto G5 Plus in the software side of things, since it actually has a lot of useful features and it is near stock Android, and the Moto G5 Plus is still very fast even if it has the mid-range Snapdragon 625 chipset. Otherwise, the Honor 8 is generally better in terms of hardware, but the EMUI skin is terrible. Otherwise, you would be a geek to buy the Honor 8 just because the hardware is better; it does not mean you'll have a better experience with that phone compared to the Moto G5 Plus.

I'm pretty happy with Motorola updates so far. I bought a Moto Z in February and so far it had Nougat out of the box and two security updates. Maybe that's because it's a more expensive phone than the G, but hopefully I don't get disappointed by the roll out of 7.1 or 8.0.

Having owned the moto g5 plus for several weeks would suggest it is difficult to recommend. I upgraded from my old nexus 5 and at first the moto seemed to be a very capable budget phone however, the constant lagging and cashing apps soon left me feeling that the moto g5 plus was a poor choice. After a factory reset things were fine, but after two weeks the problems were back. I thought perhaps it's just my device that is a dud, but a quick search on Google revealed that other people using the moto g5 plus are experiencing similar problems!

The Moto G series are pretty cool for midrange/budget/starter handsets... My previous phone was a Moto G 2, and for the money, it had some awesome features such as front-facing stereo speakers, a gyro, proximity sensor, compass, LED alert light... Quite a few features you would find on a flagship, but usually not on a budget... Only had 8 GB of on-board storage and 1 GB of RAM, but what do you expect? For two years, I used the shit out of it... Still have it and now use it as a mini-tablet...Just no carrier functions enabled, strictly internet, photoediting, and image storage...

With the Moto X Pure now out of production, and on limited support, that left the Moto Z, which I did not like because of all the optional and expensive mods... My sister has a Galaxy S7, and I was not impressed with that handset's on-board sound quality through wired headphones... Then I ran into a few friends I knew who were still using old HTC M7s and M8s, and got a walk-through of their handsets... After that, I was interested in an HTC product, and the rest is history...

Last week I purchased a new Moto G5 plus with 32 GB internal memory and 2 GB ram. So far I really like it. One thing concerns me though. The ram usage seems quite high to me, 1.5 GB out of 1.8 total. Is this a problem, of am I just being obsesive? If it is a problem, how can I fix it?
