I have YZ250 2 stroke. Its fully ported, high compression ratio, fatty pipe, bored carb, well tuned, race tech suspension valving and springs...all the best stuff. Clutch shifting is just wrong, for so many reasons, including the bike balance and traction. I also spoke to 2 former Pro Supercross racers whom I ride with, and they have never heard of using the clutch for shifting. Dirt bike transmissions are built to not use the clutch - thats how they are designed. Use the clutch for traction control, but not shifting. To shift without the clutch, just "twitch" the throttle off for a micro second. This unloads the transmission and the bike will smoothly and effortlessly click into the next gear. Downshifting is done under braking thus the transmission is already unloaded. This "use the clutch for shifting rhetoric is just bad advice.
@jcaashby34 жыл бұрын
Coming from street to dirt I always used the clutch to shift. Recently stopped using it and it is much easier and faster without using it. And as a technician you are correct it will not harm the transmission at all.
@atypical_moto4 жыл бұрын
When I try to downshift on my DRZ400SM without the clutch, there's a ton of force keeping me from pressing the shift lever. I could blip the throttle to get rid of that force, but that means adding throttle while trying to stop AKA it's slower. I use my brakes to stop the bike, not the engine. There's literally no advantage to downshifting without the clutch. When I was a beginner on quads, I wouldn't use the clutch to shift. People act like clutchless shifting is an advanced technique but it's natural for newbies. In reality you have no control over the rear tire speed when you just dump gears without the clutch. Slipping the clutch on downshifts to control rear wheel speed, is the advanced technique.
@AdrianButler863 жыл бұрын
@@atypical_moto perhaps for stopping or slowing down fast it best to use all 3. Pull in clutch n bang down a gear, now all at same time u slowly release clutch for engine braking AND u apply both brakes smoothly

totally disagree about using clutch for upshift. A very slight release "twitch" of the throttle unloads gearbox and enables a smooth effortless upshift & its a quicker shift then pulling and releasing clutch lever. It also gives more consistant power to rear wheel thus keeping bike balanced. Clutch should be used as a traction control device on corner exit and off starts.

This bloke has got the whole clutch thing the wrong way around, the dogs on the gears don't care about the clutch, what they care about is the torque on them that is pushing the male dog against the side of the female hole. If you back off the throttle so that you are on a trailing throttle with it just cracked open as you change gear then there is no side load on the dogs and it will change gear with ease. This is much harder to do on a downshift as the engine is acting as a brake (even a 2 stroke will do this) and the engine braking is placing side load on the dogs. If you change gear with load on the dogs the sharp square edges of the dog gets rounded off so they end up slipping past each other, when this happens the selector forks get bent which means that the dogs no longer fully overlap each other so they are even more likely to slip.

I'm only six feet tall but I have giant feet. Size 13 ! I'm gonna adjust my shift lever up a bit. Thanks for the post.

+Johnny Vegas I will also be adjusting my shift lever after seeing this, now that Ir makes sense why it was so hard to get my foot under it haha

+Burnin Green Found out hammer Head makes a 20 mm shift lever for big feet. I'm gonna try it cause my foot has got stuck between the shifter and the peg many times and some day it could make me wipe out.

tell me if im right, to put in first gear you hold the clutch an down shift once. then to change gear you up shift holding clutch. correct or incorrect?
@codenamenel9 жыл бұрын
+Charlotte Jewell Correct, you have to make sure you go far enough upwards that you go back through Neutral into 2nd

Make sure when you downshift that you slow down because it locks the back wheel some times

+Jimbo Jones that just depends on the bike. mx bikes are made for that

I just Stay in 4 gear or if i need to accelerate I go down then go up again
@guesswhat37458 жыл бұрын
So you should use the clutch when you shift up...I don't. I let off the throttle, should I still pull the clutch?
@mikkomakinen57548 жыл бұрын
I guess its just because you wanna accelerate as fast as possible and that way you have to let off gas

I never used the clutch too, when i tried it, it felt much better i'd say try it

I never did when I first started ridding but I figured it out with the clutch and feels much better. Learn how to use it slowly and then it just gets easier and easier

I bought brand new o neal boots n it has steel toe but i cant shift up just down and i have tried breaking them in can anyone help
@thumpertalk4 жыл бұрын
Outside of more seat time, possibly look at moving your shift lever up one spline. This will give you a tad more room to get your toe under it.

My boot is too big to upshift I have my lever at like a 45degree angle to actually use it
@eduardosanchez78502 жыл бұрын
I heard you supposed to use clutch upshiting and no clutch downshifting

@infernalkraken90224 жыл бұрын
Loosen screw on the shifter slide it off and the shaft will have a bunch of notches just move it up slightly until it slips back on and should be perfect dont take much time or movement of the shifter

You mad bro ?!?? I'm would never down shift without clutch , try it it's not nice 😂 up shifting without clutch is totally fine , if anything using your clutch while shifting up will wear out the plates more than not using it !! Also the dirtbike gear boxes aren't anything special your gear dogs are always hitting each other if you shift with or without the clutch so I doesn't matter , if your a Sunday rider , then use the clutch as it's just a nice feeling, if you wanna race then ditch using the clutch for up shifting and when you down shift using the clutch for coners only feather it so you have the bitting point and let it out slow to prevent wear on the plates , that's my view !
@sxs2438 жыл бұрын
haha definitely not. if your fast and you get lazy on the clutch with upshifts the dogs will be fucked in no time and it will start popping out of gear under load. power shifting full throttle just touching the clutch makes a huge difference and the clutch plates can handle it no problem. without clutched upshifts i normally loose 3rd gear in 30 ish hours. clutched upshifts and i have had no issues at all
@seanyboiktm8 жыл бұрын
Fair enough but I've had no issues what so ever with clutch less up shift so until i wear a gear out I'll keep doing it hahah makes a big dif in a race environment but cause days out I'll use the clutch I can afford to replace them if they wear out so not a big deal

i think Gary Semics knows his stuff, if you think downshifting without the clutch, on dirt, is bad, then you have the same mentality of an old guy that thinks his modern motocross bike still acts like a worn-out 1970's road bike.. aka. an ignorant bastard that should really start to learn how things have changed.
