I have a 2021 Audi S5 Cab and the ipad like screen is the same as this RS5's. I have to say I was not enamored with the tacked on screen looks, but it has me liking it much more than the screen in my Porsche. In the Porsche I have to look down (while driving) to adjust anything on the screen and my eyes leave the road. Adjusting the screen in the Audi, it's just a sideways glance and I do not have to remove my eye from the road. So in my case practicality outweighs the appearance. Love the videos.

I agree with you but I wonder why Audi ditched the retractable screen that came out of the dash. It was really cool to be honest and it was classic Audi. It's a shame they got rid of it.

@@dylanw890 I totally agree, also the touchscreen can sometimes be difficult to use on bumpy roads, makes me choose the wrong icon if I hit a bump. My son owns a 2018 A6 SLine and his car has the retractable screen and I really, really like it better than the "tack on" screen in my RS5. I'd be happier if they'd put the little touchpad or touchwheel on the center console for use while driving instead of the touchscreen only.

I always feel like the RS5 is the underdog in its class and is often looked over bc the C63 and M4 are better drivers cars. A lot of the owners of these cars aren’t pulling these cars out on a Sunday morning to go drive down their favourite road only once a week, they’re daily driving them and that’s where the RS5 shines. It trades some driving dynamics and driver engagement for a more comfortable drive. The RS5 mostly fixes the huge lag issues in the B9 platform, both the A5 and S5 use single turbo engines and paired with the Audi programmed ZF 8 spd the lag on those engines was horrible (I owned 2 with the same platform). At least the twin turbo aids the engine side of things but the transmission still needs work. Next gen RS5 will most likely be electrified to some degree so that should help, I see it becoming a 4 cylinder which is going to be a sad day. Great review!
@soarabove337 Жыл бұрын
I generally agree with this bc something weird happened & my RS5 is now my third freaking Audi: S4 & S5, with Caddy Vsport and even 38 mos behind the wheel of a Guilia QV mixed in... I don't mind MBs bc they're just as heavy as Audi & I can't abide by BMW interiors (better than they've ever been, but not comfortable as any comparable Audi). I do autoX and open track days, plus I did drag my S4 a handful of times. After the late-night prep & early-morning starts to events, I'm pretty comfortable putting the Audi into sleep mode & just cruising home.

First off, nice socks! Spot on regarding the torque curve. Takes about a second to wake up, helps to drive around in dynamic and keep the revs in the sweet spot. Impossible that we will ever see a NA V8 again. I've been so tempted to snag an R8 for that very reason, that V10 will be goon sooner rather than later. I've had my RS5 for 2.5 years now and its a good daily driver but really excels on the open road. Can drive it for hours without any fatigue.

They had to bring it out to make it easier to reach since it's touch. The old screen looked better, it had a metal trim around it that matched other trim on the dash, and it was small enough that when you turned it off you could easily just ignore it and concentrate on the virtual cockpit.

N/A Audi V8s died with the previous RS5. It was a glorious engine and beat out the Lexus engine in character as well. It was just heavy, subject to carbon build-up, and very gutless at daily-driving speeds. The engine was a casualty of the subsequent torque war between the 3 makers since everyone went turbo. Sadly the golden age of German V8s passed with that generation.

Oh YEAH! You are SO RIGHT there lol. I traded my S5 in on an RS5 & can't imagine a road ever built where the RS5's "present"/full-on stiff suspension can seem smooth. Idk maybe Ingolstadt was thinking ahead to how the roads on Mars would be, but it's not like that anywhere I've been. Then again, I've never driven a freshly-paved, diamond-cut Indy Motor Speedway lol. I will say this: my Guilia QV was a far better-handling car and it was pretty rough too... but not this bad, which makes me wonder about the engineering tradeoff of "stiffer is better" without ado to general ride characteristics. I set both RS modes into lower levels of suspension because it's just flat too much, even on a generally-good road. Also, my RS5 color combo completely matches what OP hates lmao. ;-)

Actually, in South Africa- some years back- Audi's whole thing was abt managing weight transfer in a moving vehicle, as opposed to BMW's balanced stationary weight. I thinj that whole logic has translated into this car, as u described it. Nice 1 Audi!!!...actually, in applying those principles to driving a normal front wheel drive car, I can outdrive any rear wheel drive in any road becoz i use the car's weight to manipulate it into changing its trajectory even before using the wheel to change direction- and in this way u got 2 means of steering- weight and wheel

@user-wz4ei2iu6w3 жыл бұрын
@@tomacandelara Yes! Initial throttle response is greatly improved over the stock setup. Virtually gone is the perception of turbo lag. However, a new personality trait emerges. Because of the effortless induction of air through the throttle body, the engine computer now needs APR SOFTWARE to recalibrate the conversation between the ECU and the TCU. I find that driving in fully automatic mode, especially part-throttle while rolling can really confuse the transmission. Shifting with the paddles=non-issue. Also, the AWE TUNING AIRGATE CARBON FIBER INTAKE has a removable lid that, if removed helps produce some of the sexiest intake/turbo music I've ever heard.

@darrell96163 жыл бұрын
I agree with many of the comments here. Audi's interior design language is a bit off the rails IMO. Going to the larger screen in this refresh was a bad decision and made the screen far more of an eyesore. It was Ok pre-refresh, but now it's just too big and it looks terrible. The use of gloss black was also a step backward. The A6 and higher are even worse. Don't even get me started on the lack of color choices. The transmission is also an issue because Audi has never been able to tune the ZF8 as well as BMW. At the end of the day, this car leaves me wanting. At the end of the day, it's a high-end GT car with performance that approaches that of sports cars. This car isn't sharp enough to be a sports car and it weighs too much. Why Audi refuses to embrace what its S and RS cars are is beyond me. If they did, maybe they would become better products.
@marionetteworks3 жыл бұрын
That's why I love the pre-refresh 2019 with the smaller more integrated screen with the satisfying rotary knob, and no piano-black whatsoever! Also the exterior styling was fine before they tarted it up with unnecessary extra bling. The 2019 RS5 Sportback was already perfect. Really the only drawback are the dated graphics in the MMI, because simpler more monochromatic graphics have become trendier in newer UIs. But all graphics are going to get outdated sooner or later no matter how cool they look when the car is new.
@Pabla983 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of what you said about the gloss black and the screens on the refreshed models. In terms of driving dynamics a lot of people don’t understand the purpose of RS/S models they’re not trying to be the sharpest, most dynamic cars in the segment they’re trying to be the best at balancing comfort of with dynamic driving. If you want something dynamic get an E63 or M5 both of those are more engaging to drive when driven hard but when they’re driven normally they can’t match the comfort of the RS6. I could have a biased opinion being that I’ve owned many audis in the past, but these sub 150k cars are being daily driven for the most part so people aren’t driving them hard all the time. Even then Audi’s aren’t horrible when driven hard either. The ZF8 speeds though definitely needs some work, audis suffer from so much lag it’s one of the worst things about the brand.
@darrell96163 жыл бұрын
@@Pabla98 You echoed my point exactly. It's as if Audi doesn't even understand that given the lack of features one expects in this price category. MB has the same problem with the E53. A GT car they are trying to market as a high performance sports car which it isn't.
@Pabla983 жыл бұрын
@@darrell9616 well not exactly, I see that Audi is trying fill a niche that BMW and Mercedes don’t fill. Both those cars fighting to be the most dynamic, visceral and engaging cars, while Audi is choosing to give up some of that in turn for some comfort. RS for the most part does mean a sportier car it also means a more prestigious car, aka one step above in terms of luxury above the S models. It gives buyers the option who don’t want a super sporty, uncomfortable car something that’s still very fun to drive but a little more attainable to drive daily.
@darrell96163 жыл бұрын
@@Pabla98 You are misunderstanding me. I know what the S and RS cars are and what they are not. What I'm saying is that Audi doesn't know what they want those cars to be. There is no excuse for the lack of color choices and restricted heated wheel options in these cars when they are obviously more comfort oriented: GT not sports. S and RS are GT cars. Nothing wrong with that. Audi seems to be ashamed to admit it.

I own a 2021 RS5 (Nardo gray with black optics (looks much better and I get many great comments on this color combo). Audi discontinued the more aesthetic retractable screen design probably for safety/reliability reasons. Agree it has a tacked-on ipad look -- so do a lot of pad-centric EVs -- but agree strongly with another who commented that when driving, the line-of-site position is definitely an advantage. With most touchscreen cars you have to look down. I really like the easy of getting to this screen. All touchscreens are more difficult to use on bumpy roads, since it becomes easier to misplace your finger. That being said, the icons on the RS5 screen are large, very responsive, and have haptic feedback. The screen will likely be more integrated into the dash in the forthcoming B10 series, but I hope they do not move it down too much. Industry also seems to be heading in this segment to hybrid 4-pot ICE engines with electric motors along to help boost power. Will be interesting to see how that works out.

RS5 is def faster in the coup version and reacts better to the APR tune for some reason. I can do 0-60 in 3.2 secs consistently where spas the Panamera S feels like a boat …similar to the Dodge Charger but with a better drivetrain and transmission

I'm gonna miss this generation of Audi designs when the 5 bow out. The new stuff can't hit the right note anymore, they're either too bland or too aggressive ... The understated elegance is sadly no more.

Thought that about the one before this . . . but got a good look at this one after shooting it and there are some delicious details throughout. Not as organic as the original but at least I don't have to argue about the nose:)

This is not a Porsche engine stuffed into an Audi, it's very much the other way around. Audi made this engine, Porsche poached it.
@robertgordon59562 жыл бұрын
Correct, but I suspect Porsche provided some assistance.
@vomErsten2 жыл бұрын
@@robertgordon5956 Porsche definitely massaged their version of it. Audi is the R&D powerhouse of the entire VW group, so I am sure they had some requirement to make sure it is Porsche-able in whatever way that meant.

Haha your taste is divisive! Surely hardly anyone else wants chrome on their car?

Satin finish chrome does not equal chrome. Have a look at this car: kzbin.info/www/bejne/in_TgIuYYpKtf7M

@@MotoManTV It doesn't look too bad in that application, but I'm a black everywhere apart from wheels kinda guy. I think the chrome looks OK on the new Minis though (and others) but as a rule of thumb, not so good on performance models. It's less aggressive than black I guess is the point.

This is just my opinion, but Audi have totaled ruined the look of the RS5. The 2013~15 models were perfect, offering a good balance of subtlety mixed in with aggression. The new versions look like the designers have gone overboard with trying to make the car stand out. No longer does the career exude elegance with beautiful styling; but rather, it’s something that maybe a teen high strung on gushers would draw up. Why would Audi mess up a classic like this is something I always ponder when I see the new ones on the street 🤦🏽
