@RollsRoyceCars is coming to the #EV party late with the Rolls Royce Spectre and in doing so, they have kept or improved all the hallmarks that make a Rolls Royce a Rolls Royce while building a completely new foundation for the company moving forward. MotoMan gets behind the wheel to learn there is so much more going on with the Rolls Royce Spectre than just its propulsion system!

Right now I'm at the 2024 Chicago International Auto Show for the 2-day press event. I'm shooting reviews for the Vehicle Visionary KZbin channel. While walking the floor this morning I saw MotoMan, in his customary plaid buttondown shirt, and I stopped him, introduced myself and asked him to take a picture with me. This guy was SO gracious and polite to me and took the picture, even though I was interrupting him. He's a gentleman. Thanks for the picture MotoMan 🙂👍. I'm watching the Spectre video, just like I told you 😂.

I would argue that one of the whole points of owning a Rolls is being enveloped in a tomb like silence. After all, who else names their cars things like Phantom, Wraith, Spectre and Ghost? For over a century, Rolls-Royce has been doing everything to build a powerful engine that you didn't really hear. So now without internal combustion, you've distilled the whole experience down to that silence. Also, I can't see most owners taking these on extra long road trips. Oh I guess they might but Rolls owners own SEVERAL vehicles that just might be better for going to the estate in the mountains than the daily driver they use to impress the folks at the country club. So while the fast charging isn't state of the art. most of the time its probably going to be charged at home, like most EV owners do.

One can tell they tried hard with the design to bring something "new" yet RR in the core siluette. I think it will sell but mostly as a car to take on short journeys and maybe that´s ok and it´s the way RR cars are driven nowadays. It just makes you think on how much money people are ready to spend on vehicles they can´t use in all types of trips or maybe is just me and my rants. Still, BMW quality today is off the charts so it will be a great and pleasing experience for the buyers. Nice video MM and the best and most unique bit of this video about RR.... is MM´s red shoe laces. :)

Im not a BEV fan even tho i was a first EV adopert w/ the Leaf and focus EV. The class needs to compete on its own not be propped up by gov and tax payer incentives given the horrendous draw it is for hard to find resources we don't have mines for. Meanwhile I see news of charging networks around the globe now being on the decline. Why? Because no on is making money w/ them. So now you have a shrinking charging network, more of these hungry things coming on the grid drawing your limited power in select parts of the country. What a joke. BEV needs to stand alone. End of story. Win on your own accord. Not because we gave a cripple a one wheel to compete in a sprint. HOWEVER that said i do like this. I don't hate all BEV's this looks to be well executed and of course why wouldn't it. Its RR.

16:36 BOOOOOOOOO Lets come back to this in 2030. Because i doubt that's true. GM and other automakers have gone from full EV back to investing in ICE because they know its not the future in time. These things have a long ways to go. Its not that we cant build them now. Obviously this is a testimate but we cannot convert the fleet over like everyone wants while providing power. Its an impossibility when you look at global supplies. Anyone play Anno? Its like that. Do you have the mines? No you don't In this case of reality a mine takes 5-10 years to get up to production and we are missing by my account 30 mines for the material needed to do whatsw wanted. Thus statements like this are most likely for shareholders only.

I have to disagree about the comment of the EV noises being gimmicky and stupid. In my opinion, it's no different than exhaust noises being tuned to sound a certain way. It's not for everyone's ear, but it is helping create a signature sound to engage more of your senses with the car. Just my two cents.

Personally I think the whole gas vs EV argument is silly. Both have their purpose and pros and cons, I wish the EV fanboys would understand why EVs don't make good sports cars, and I wish ICE fans would acknowledge the obvious benefits of EVs when it comes to daily drivers. I say this as an enthusiast myself, I've owned several manual transmission sports cars including my current c7 Vette. And I'm telling you, when it comes to daily drivers, a well-executed EV is simply better. We have a Jaguar I-PACE EV as our daily driver. This replaced our 970 Panamera Turbo (both of which we bought used btw), a car that most ICE fans would probably agree is a pretty good daily driver in its own right. And I can honestly say the Jag is better in every single way. I don’t miss the Panamera one bit, neither does the wife. With the Jag, there’s no automatic transmission to get confused around town, never getting into a hot or cold car with preconditioning, there’s insane instant torque, the smoothness and refinement is unmatched (not only because no engine noise but also because the 1000 pound battery insulates you from road noise), the use of space is excellent (small on the outside and big on the inside because no engine), low center of gravity, naturally perfect weight distribution, being able to blow by anyone in traffic anytime, never being in the wrong gear, way more efficient, never being late because I had to stop for gas, no maintenance, quicker than most v8 family cars and more efficient than i-4 family cars, etc etc. And even though on paper the panamera was faster 0-60, in real life around town it’s not even close - the Jag would be gone before the panamera would even get into the right gear. Yes, it can be annoying on road trips - but it's not the end of the world unless you road trip all the time. It's the better car 364 days of the year, and the worse car 1 day of the year. Having said all of that, like I said I'm an enthusiast, and we also have two sports cars (manual transmission c7 corvette stingray and an R56 Mini Cooper JCW, both of which I frequently use for road rallys and autocross), and I have no desire for either of those to be electric. The whole point of those cars is a visceral, loud, lightweight, connected experience with a manual transmission. I know there is a Boxster EV coming soon and I’m sure it’ll be great and smoke my c7 around any racetrack, but I have no interest at all, even as a current EV owner. Sports cars should be gas powered and manual IMO. So as I said, each has their purpose. I don’t see myself ever going back to gas for daily driver, and I don’t see myself ever going EV for sports cars. My point is simple: EVs are better at some things, and gas cars are better at some things. "Taking a side" doesn't make sense, even for enthusiasts. Just acknowledge what the other is better at. EVs dont work for everyone (you need a place to charge and can't road trip all the time etc etc), but if it works in your lifestyle - try it before you knock it is all I'm saying. You might be surprised. And like I said - just because a car is EV doesn't make it good. There are good EVs and bad ones, just like gas cars. For example, I' not a huge Tesla fan. But, the well-executed EVs are, in my opinion, the best daily drivers, if they fit into your lifestyle. ...and this is coming from someone that's currently on his 8th manual transmission sports car (Vette, Mini JCW, 350Z, etc etc). And to be clear - these are my favorite cars, not the I-PACE. But, I have a wife and a kid, and we need something that isn't manual and has a back seat. And in that category, the Jag is by far and away the best we've had.

12:00 Im going to go off on a mechanical rant here. The clock first of all well done. We love that. I hate lexus taking it away from the LC. BOO. The guages! WHY do these luxury automakers gloss over this missed opportunity. I hate these plastic crap screens all over cars. And RR, Bentley owners don't either which is why they cover it up w/ the door. So why do they think putting a screen for the gauge cluster is acceptable. Insult to injury its made to look mechanical. WTH. Go to a world renound clock maker and have them craft you a beautifully stunning gauge cluster i can find joy looking at each time i get in the car. I hate screens! MotoMan, where to begin. Rolls Royce could easily electrify the Phantom, and receive applause from their clientele. But Rolls made the Spectre an enormous 2-door fastback. I maintain that an electric car doesn't have to be "special" - just be a good car. Why is the Spectre sooo expensive? For all the money, the Spectre is Not ugly, but it's not the beautiful Rolls that price tag suggests. The Phantom is the Rolls Royce that makes sense to me. The Spectre makes no sense , even if it had a V12 option available. I now have a new appreciation for the Wraith!
@MotoManTV
@MotoManTV 4 ай бұрын
You kind of answered your own question: The Phantom is the 'bread and butter' Rolls Royce. The one they can't afford to alienate their clientele on. That is why they are 'testing' a different propulsion system first on a totally separate car not core to the business of Rolls Royce.

Understood. Rolls Royce operates at an altitude I will never reach, and R-R know their customers thoroughly. My IONIQ 5 can DC fast charge approximately twice as fast the Spectra. 👉🏼However the Spectra can AC charge approximately twice as fast as my IONIQ 5 with a more capable built in charger.👍🏼I personally put 6 times👀 more energy in my IONIQ 5 using AC from my garage than I do publicly DC Fast Charging. Hyundai installing a better AC charger would be welcomed even though over night charging at my lower rate with a smaller battery is adequate. The low prioritization of AC charging in many US EV’s is due to little street side, deck, shopping and other parking charging opportunity’s like at work. I doubt anyone is going to pile on the highway miles on road trips needing DCFC’s with the Spectra. Hopefully every Spectra owner will install the correct charger to exploit one of Spectra’s greatest strengths that match its 4.4, 0-60 capability. Direct wire an 22kW EVSE on a 120A breaker as an investment in to always having your Rolls ready.

Sometimes I wonder about the push for EVs. 🤔 Hertz sells off their high maintenance inventory.😮 Road barriers cannot withstand the weight of heavy EVs.😯 Considerably more wear & tear on tires due to heavy weight.😲 Lack of charging network and mechanics.😳 That noted, if there was ever a candidate for a luxury car manufacturer to go fully EV, Rolls-Royce would be at the top of my list. The cars are rarely driven. 😉😄

Was covered in detail in the episode - and will add more in a coming episode: The car was engineered as a Rolls Royce first that happens to be propelled by two electric motors. If you look at the many details we covered - the wheel size, the size the car, the UX - ALL of was envisioned with one goal: continue what Rolls Royce has been doing for 100 years despite the propulsion system. Exactly the opposite of what many OEMs have done with EV. They have felt the need to reinvent the car itself to prove that it is EV.

The design and styling is absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, you lost me at "260 mile range." The only EV I would seriously consider (and I'm not) is Lucid - because they're the only EV manufacturer that has made serious steps to address the range anxiety issue - and then, of course there's the woefully inadequate EV charging infrastructure. No, this car is for elites who just want to virtue signal to everyone that they're saving the planet by driving an EV (which they're not - but that's another topic again). Ultimately, the market has spoken - and the word is that the vast majority of people do not want EVs.

Beautiful car but what would one expect, but when any manufacturer attempts to decide what the market will have instead of letting market make decisions, they usually guess wrong! is this the Roll Royce equivalent of any color you like as long as like black moment! 102 kWh barely meets the new Macan, seems lees than the new Taycan. Ideally this would have the Lucid drivetrain or at least the new Taycan's, so it's less of a pain on a longer drive. In the modern world of "responses" you may need to driver FAR in a hurry. Even take turns with your driver to get to your destination in time. Unless you want to sit in a private jet and wera a face diaper like a simp. A Lucid might be the way to go, low consumption, decent back seat and a really strong A to B time cross continent. The Rolls is probably king when staying in your metropolitan area, but loses hours on a day long roadtrip.

I have responded to another comment on the bigger issue at hand with government mandates, but I am a fan of EVs as a daily. Why? You literally spend ZERO time in your day looking for energy. Does not sound like a big deal and no one really talks about it. However, once you spend time with an EV - and I do that a lot now - plugging it in at night and then heading out in the AM with enough energy for the day - transformative. That said, comes at a cost that few EV fans will honestly admit. That, a discussion for another day.

I can get a BMW i7 M70 for $300K less....and with the better-lookikg iconic glow grille AND a TV in the back. Why would you spend this much money on this car? Pointless.

If your point is there is always a premium for the 2-door. Point well taken. And you get the umbrellas here too. Don't forget that.

As I always say, I think you're completely wrong about the push the EVs. I think you're stance on the methodology comparing their environmental footprint with ICE vehicles is wrong. I think you're stance on the free market, specifically the ability of the free market to respond to climate change, is wrong. The free market cannot, and will not, respond to climate change unless legally required to. With that out of the way, I think BMW is completely missing out when it comes to what it could be doing with Rolls Royce. Rolls Royce is solely meant to sell overpriced cars. They can play on that and use platforms like the Spectre to experiment with space-age battery chemistries, battery pack configurations, cell formats, carbon fiber construction, high-voltage electrical architectures, and other things. Companies like BMW are held back by the realities of using materials like carbon fiber and using the newest, most advanced cell chemistries available. I don't think it's out of the question for Rolls Royce to profitably do all of that. They already charge an arm and a leg for all their cars.

Always appreciate respectful disagreement. Two very different points here - on the second, we mostly agree. On the first, worthy of a conversation. The EU & US have chosen a one size fits all approach tied to a wholly unrealistic timeline to address what they have termed a 'climate crisis'. No one is arguing against clean air, reducing waste or sustainability where it makes logical sense. What we do take issue with is the completely out of touch with reality plan and funding associated with it for 'climate' pet projects to the exclusion of all other possibilities. Government bodies have chosen Automotive OEMs as the boogey man and because they reign supreme over the likes of BMW Group, Mercedes, Ford, etc., uninformed lawmakers force their political plans on real economies which have had and will continue to have increasingly dire implications. Now, if you are a frequent viewer, you know I am not against EVs, I am against the governments forcing them down our throats at a dangerous pace without acknowledging very credible & far less costly (money and resources) alternatives. Rather than driving EV adoption through tax payer funded incentives, they should have invested that money into a public private cooperation to rebuild the grid (EU & US over time). Why? The grid will be the foundation of the utopia the lawmakers envision. If they had any hope of success in their ambitious plan, they would have started by addressing the root level of the problem: How is our energy created rather than making an entire industry that drives whole economies the scape goat for their hysteria. They didn't because they knew they couldn't move infrastructure change and investment fast enough so they chose the path of political theater instead of real change. So here we are in 2024 and more people have been negatively impacted by these overreactions to climate than the issue the lawmakers claim to be solving. That has gotten a lot of folks who up until recently couldn't care less and just went along to get along to stand up and take notice. This is the foundation for some of the pushback you are seeing on not just EV mandates, but the overall answer to anything is . . . 'climate emergency'. The combination of the changing tides of public perception and the realities of the world and what it takes to keep society going will continue to push unrealistic lawmakers to delay their plans and over time, they will start to warm to multiple solutions that have been presented many times as path forward but discarded because they did not fit within the EV train . . . Totally understand that no matter what I write here, many will disagree. However, it is time more of us point out the gaping holes in the logic because the cost of not doing so has been far too high and moving forward will continue to rise.

Who buys these cars? They scream, hey look at me I’m silly wealthy and want everyone to know it. They’re comically big as though you really need a dock, bow and stern thrusters and big cleats.

Autojournalism aside, I'd prefer to stay out of politics and government mandates here. The reporter lives in California, has witnessed the full wraith (or Wraith? since it's a RR episode ;-) ) of CA Wildfires just like all other residents, and still thinks EVs are about government mandates... that really sounds uninformed to me. If your home insurance for fire gets cancelled because it's too risky / prone to wildfire to insure, you start believing in climate change, or even if you don't - your insurance company will make you consider it harder.

Appreciate where you are coming from. Most of us don't want to mix our car discussions with politics, however, that is no longer possible. Multiple governments around the world have chosen to enter the car business without knowing the impact their overreach would create. In other words, I didn't set out to get into the world of politics . . . politics chose to enter mine. And while we're on politics . . . More on this topic in response to another viewer here in the comments. Regarding wildfires: Perhaps a bit more research is required for those not in the know: California wildfires are the direct result of poor management on the part of the people 'running' the state. Prior to the current super majority running the state, there was a budget and effort for wildfire prevention. Actions such as controlled burns went a long way to prevent wildfires.
The 2024 EV9 ain’t a Kia. It’s an unexpected luxury car.
