Well, my customer had just put a brand new battery in his bike before winter and wouldn't you know it!?!?! It won't start after a ride to work! He keeps it on a tender, and said he charged it up when he got the new battery, but I have my suspicions.
Come with me as I check the battery, charging system, and completely diagnose why this sport bike won't hold a charge.
Thank you for watching and please subscribe!

I had the same issue like 3 times and it was the stator and rectifier/regulator. Every time I’ve changed those it worked again. Had the bike for like 7-8 years

I smiled soon as he gave the symptoms. My Tiger 1050 was the same. Long story short….. the ÉCU is very fussy about the volts it has to play with. Anything around 12.3 volts and it’ll refuse to allow a start. Give the battery a heavy charge till it reaches 12.5 or more and the ÉCU is happy. Trouble is a battery on its way out won’t hold that charge. Leave it a while and it’ll be back to 12.3 or less and you now know what the ÉCU thinks of that. Bike batteries often start to weaken after 2/3 years. You’re lucky if you get one that lasts longer. Safe riding all.

I’ve been swapping out a new battery every year! Eventually it got bad all the time. Started out stalling on tick over when hot. You can check the charge voltage yes it was 14+ volts I replaced with a OEM storm regulator seemed to sort it for a year. Started acting up at high revs and tick over hot. Ok one thing I haven’t done THE STATOR these short out and the short cuts the bike out. The short heats more windings and it’s going to burn out the lamination on the winding. This stator was changed before but I think it was the regular at first but once the stator is burnt it will cause problems until you change it! Best change both together. The voltage did show low before stalling used Tune ECU to log the voltage.

Did you check to see if voltage fluctuated when reving the bike? These bikes have a known issue with the rectifier regulator, which in turns damages the battery. Swapping out the battery could be a temporary fix. Great video!

Yeah I definitely made sure of that. I've gone through plenty of those on my own to know better.

thx for the vid. my 2012 has a 3yo OEM style Yuasa battery that's just 3yo on the trickle charger and it wouldn't crank last time i tried it. lights and engine noise but wouldn't turn over. when i tried starting today - two or 3 weeks later - it's not even giving me any juice. SO, i looked to get the same type battery it had when i purchased - lithium ion. incredibly light and lasted 8 years on the same trickle charger. ANYway, now it's in the basement charging on the proper charger that's 1.5 volts. tomorrow morning, i;ll throw it in the bike to see how it does and if it will keep a charge to putter around. i should only take it about 3 miles or so before stopping and getting stranded. was also thinking about just going straight to the Cycle Gear store for a replacement. what being a motorcyclist the past 50 yrs has taught me is that once the battery is totally dead, it's likely not to hold a charge and best to replace. So being acid battery, which i hat to mess with, I also plan to call the mech shop i use to ask if they can pick up a LI battery for them to install if i can get the bike over there. If not, they can charge it and i'll come by for it and install myself. just that once i didn't have the bolts secure enough and it allowed disconnect at stops. very unnerving. lol. thx again for the vid.

Common triumph issue: I’ll see if Triumph can update the computer. Computer limits starter to start if a bit below or too high voltage recommended voltage when turn bike on. Ask dealer to update computer, Triumph know their issues they should recall & fix it

I've had that happened twice... arrived to a place and 2 hours later dead battery. a couple months later the stator burned the conector underneath the tank and the first two inches of the cable that goes in the regulator... I use a gel battery, acid are not that reliable (as far as my experience) cheers from mexico!!!!

My expérience...Triumph daytona 2016 bought in 2017. 40000km now. The bike is only use for holidays 3 month per year. For the last 3 years, i had change for a new battery every year. 2 years ago, i change the exhaust for a SCproject racing + K&S filter. Had triumph trying to find a mapping so the bike could run perfectly. Did loose power at low rpm but gain at higher bpm. The bike does not start when the engine is hot. Need to wait 15m to cool down. When the occasional start pb occur i used to start in 2nd gear on the descent of my street. Just came back from triumph who claim that issue might be the starter engine. 3 hours of work + 1 new starter engine = around 800€...

I just replaced the battery in a '11 Speed Triple and it started right up and about 4hr later would turn over and sounded strong, but for whatever reason, wouldn't fire the bike up. We bump started it and it felt fine, turned it off and back on with no problem. A little while later, would again turn over but not start. Again, this is a new battery, followed directions and charged the battery before install, not sure what's going on. Any help would be appreciated.

A few people on here said it already, put it a shit battery or be depleted to lets say 70% and it does not start. I am wondering on how to bump start the bike as you attempted. Because for it to start at all the clutch needs to be pulled in? Btw. I jumped it to my Jeep, works all the time lol
@MotoMedic
@MotoMedic 8 ай бұрын
Right.... So when a brand new fully charged battery is depleted in 2 days there's another issue. Bump start the bike in 2nd gear. Pull the clutch... Pop it into 2nd.... Push it, hop on, dump clutch, fires up. Unless the thing isn't on. Make sure the kill switch isn't set to OFF. 😂 Jumping from a car is fine too.... Just don't start the car. Car alternators throw too many amps for smaller moto batteries to handle. The cold cranking amps of a car battery are well enough to jump start it without engine on.
@MotoMedic

The clutch only needs to be pulling in if you're trying to use the started button. It's a safety switch. Otherwise.... It wouldn't run anytime you released the clutch 🤷🏻‍♂️

you need at least 12.6v on the batteri to start.. i had the same problem before and the problem was the batteri, not that it was bad (it was under 12.6v) 12.6v and over its start like no problem :)
@MotoMedic
@MotoMedic 3 жыл бұрын
Battery was brand new and fully charged. Voltage doesn't always mean it will work. You need amperage too. His battery was holding a 12.5 or so charge but had no cranking amps. Battery was toast.

When you are testing the voltage at the battery... With bike running, it should read 13.5-14.5v. If it's reading 12v or lower, the charging system isn't working.

A load tester that actually uses a database to give an exact health status of a specific battery is far more helpful in this instance.
