I like to read history. So I will tell you some old information about Nan. In the Lanna Kingdom era, Nan was one of the important cities of the kingdom. But Nan was known as a city that was difficult to attack from the central city-states(Ayutthaya), That's because Nakhon Nan is in a high valley. There was a mountain fortress surrounding the city. Nan was therefore never occupied by a kingdom from the central region, But Nan was part of the Lanna Kingdom. Therefore, when Chiang Mai was occupied by Ayutthaya, Nan therefore seemed to fall under the rule of Ayutthaya by default. And since ancient times Because the journey to Nan was very difficult, and surrounded by forests and mountains, Later in the communist war era(60's&70's), Communist partisans also used the area of ​​Nan in the mountainous forests as a base, In those days, travel from the central region to Nan was still difficult. Until the 80's and 90's The central government therefore developed roads to Nan Province to be more and more convenient. If you use Google Maps to look at Nan from a great height, You can clearly see that Nan city is actually in the middle of a high mountain range.

Nan is less known for tourists but it has several nice routes comparable to Mae Hong Sorn Loop!
