At 3:49 you said that these valves are not common to fail. If I might add, they certainly are. So much so that a lawsuit was started because of this problem, demanding that the engine be replaced under warranty and/or the waste gate had to be repaired. Found your video researching disappearing coolant on a 2016 bmw x1. Fairly certain the turbo is using coolant. Getting out of the exhaust but not steaming. Engine runs fine. Reckon I’m changing a turbo!

Test for exhaust gases in coolant system with special test strips. If coolant is present it would indicate a blown head gasket

Thanks a lot for the great video, it was a great guide for me. I just replaced my n55 turbo cartridge, it is the same concept but just a single turbo unlike the n54 and has no C-clip just four 10mm bolts around holding it in place

@motorcarnut I forgot to mention that I also replaced the wastegate flapper, which is much easier on the N55, you press the sleeve all the way till it stops because it has a lip to sit on, and no inserted pin because the lips of the housing on the top are pinched from two sides to squeeze on the sleeve, so just a little pinch with a chisel and it's all set

@@motorcarnut Here is mine, did a 3 month 2,000 mile check up and clean up on my leak. Not getting any worse from what I can tell. This is a N55B30A on my 2017 X3 xDrive35i with only 40K miles. No, not necessarily. If the cartridge was leaking from the turbine seals you would be blowing blue smoke out the tailpipe. The only place it could leak oil in that area is from the oil feed tube o ring that goes into the cartridge and they are know to fail.

I have contacted the company i bought it from and they are telling me its normal as its had no oil pressure. Would you have any ideas on how to fix a turbo leaking oil? My repair sheet from bmw says that its a turbo fix/rebuild for wastegate outside tolerance. Is it the seals? Will replacing the entire turbo fix it? Or a new wastegate actuator? I’ve got a couple options for installation that I wanted to run by you and see what you think? Option #1 install coolant pipe and oil pipe into engine block below the header before installing the exhaust manifold? Option #2 install exhaust manifold, firstly, and then the pipes if clearance will allow it? Option #3 fit the Turbo cartridge into the turbo housing after option #2 ? Option #4 Assemble the Exhaust Manifold and marry the cartridge to the turbo housing and carefully bring it into positioning with the studs, considering option #1 Bro I’m asking you this because it gave me annoying Turbo dreams 😂 I literally couldn’t sleep.

I bought 528i 2013 and has 100k miles. I got quoted for turbocharger, alternator, and radiator air support. My car fees weak and the engine sounds a little weird. Many reasons can cause this. But may be a boost problem cause by a flapper valve which I have another video on that.

Hello, I appreciate a lot your sharing o\f knowledge. I had a turbo crash. The workshop replaced a new turbocharger. After that my car acts lik in limbo with no boost at all. I ran a diagnostic and it confirm my booster pressure solenoid was defective. I replaced a new one and all errors disappear except error 29A400 saying charging pressure actuator position control. charging pressure actuator closed too far/positive deviation. My rode is a long plastic going from the wastegate to the turbocharger locked by a c-clips. Please help me. I need to make a crack pressure and adjust the wastgate properly.

@@motorcarnut I have a scan tool. I have watched many videos at KZbin where several recommend a Mityvac hand pump vacuum/pressure in order to find and adjust the crack pressure point. Have you used a hand pump to adjust the wastegate?

Hello I was doing the same procedure and I notice you place the compressor lock ring in wrong position at 8:25, I made the same mistake, the Ohm lock has one side with some angle on the edges....

My 328i 2013 has 80k mls. Mine is throwing code P1290. Mechanic scanned it and said something about the waste gate. I’m waiting for a diagnostic on Wednesday. I only get drivetrain malfunction if I do a hard pull and kill engine and don’t give it time to clear code (5mins) before starting up again

Wastegate actuators are a common failure on these cars, it's probably that.

Would it hurt to swap the actuator with a new one even if that wasnt the problem to begin with? Would I have to code it or something? Yes, and they do have to be reprogrammed with a scanner.

The electronic one may have to be reprogrammed. You can replace it and see if you get boost codes, if not you’re good to go.

The water you see out of the exhaust is normal condensation. Coolant runs throught the turbo to cool it off.

The turbo has oil and coolant flowing through the bearing to keep it lubricated and cool. Could be one of the gaskets or oil rings connected to the turbo unit.

Disconnecting the cartridge off the turbo has been a huge bump in the road. Did yours just come apart easily?

Yes, spray some penetrating oil first then try giving it a few taps, there is a pin for alignment and sometimes they get hung up there

My turbo just failed, my mechanic payed his turbo guy £900 for what you just did. Still cost me £2800 fitted. New turbo alone from bmw was £2500. My f30 has only done 60k. If you can do this it will save you thousands 😂

You can do this, but the wastegate valves are a common failure item on these cars, and if your doing just the cartridge its only a matter of time until you have to replace everything due to bad wastegates

You're welcome. Besides hand tools you will need a big snap ring pliers like in the video. Just take your time you should be fine.

Wastegate rattle is the number one problem. U need to know / learn how to weld. If the cartridge is out and if the blades are in good condition, mind as well rebuild it for $30 parts than couple hundreds $ to replace the cartridge.
