First time seeing those bolts come off that easy. Idk how many T50 we have broke. We usually cut the heads off then pull the bed.

@motorcarnut are you able to get to the fuel pump with the bed off? I have a full 4 door 2011 f150 (idk if it makes a difference or not)
@Dassick89 Жыл бұрын
Incase anyone is wondering. They are NOT T50 Torx bolts. They are T50 Torx PLUS bolts. Torx bits use a 15 degree angle for the tooth engagement. Torx Plus has a 0 degree angle. So the engagement is much sharper allowing a lot more torque. I made the mistake of using torx impact sockets and got one out and then it blew up on the others. Before I realized they are torx plus. If you plan on replacinng these with regular hex bolts. You can get to the retaining clips under the frame and heat them with a torch. My 2001 f150 is now a farm truck/beater. The bolts do not come out. I live in the NE rust belt. neeeeeed heat.
@motorcarnut Жыл бұрын
You’re correct, another viewer commented about that. I didn’t notice it and they all came out with the regular torx but definitely should use the plus. But I would not recommend using any type of flame near the fuel tank. If you have a bad vent valve etc. the tank can blow up and kill someone, so I would say NO to the average person!!!

I used the same setup to remove the bed on my old ‘95 Chevy truck. Those bolted in from underneath the bed. Fun job in the rust belt. I actually used ratchet straps tied to the corners of the bed and hooked onto the engine hoist. Worked well.

Just found out the hard way that on the 5.5' bed, Ford moved the tank or fuel pump under the cab. I'll have to drop the tank anyways. 2011 F-150 5.0 v8 2x4, 12' wheel base, 28 gallon tank. Hope this saves someone some of the trouble I had! It took me 3 hours to remove the bed bolts because one of the T50's stripped. Had to weld a nut to get it out. Oh well, lesson learned! 😂😂 I'll use ratchet straps and frame members to drop the tank. 🤘😎🤘

Stupid question but here it is anyways LOL. When re installing the bed or a new bed in my case, what is the easiest way to line it up? would you suggest screwing in longer pieces of something like all thread into the mounting holes to be able slide the bed down on then remove them to put the mounting screws in? would that make it easier or is there a different way?
@motorcarnut2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the bed is not that heavy with two people, you can just place it pretty much where it has to go and thread all the bolts in loose then measure from the bed to the cab equal on both side then tighten all the bolts down.
@LavaKimo Жыл бұрын
I need to replace the fuel tank vent valve. Do you think I could unbolt the bed and just lift the one side get access to replace that part?
@motorcarnut Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, What you can do is take out all the bolts accept the ones near the tailgate, those leave in a couple of thread so when you lift the front the bed won't side. Take off the bolts for the filler neck and you should be good to go. It's not that heavy either.
@theace1602 Жыл бұрын
my bed is coated with bedliner the bolts included. is that problematic? i didnt think about that at the time. I need to pull the bed to replace a fuel pump assembly and do an undercoat. have to have the bed off to know what model assembly i have there is like 3 different options apparently
@motorcarnut Жыл бұрын
Not really, just clean the heads of the bolts so you don’t strip them.
@krukabman Жыл бұрын
Liked the video. I noticed your gas door is sprung! If you remove it you can repair it with a series of washers and a screw to keep it from backing out again. I drilled a pilot hole and heated the screw before inserting it. (Not much room for Error) Another thing I have found when working with seized fasteners don’t go balls out straight away!! Just bump the impact a bit to shock the threads at first. I was trying to see how hard the bolts are to remove? I have to remove the bed to get my cab corners replaced.. And many times when I lived in the rust belt I would work them in and out several times using a light weight penetrating fluid every time I changed direction.
@motorcarnut Жыл бұрын
The spring on the gas cap works just fine now. I was sick of replacing the whole assembly every 3 years or so. The bolts have to be soaked overnight and yes the way you said you go back and fourth a couple of times to break them loose. That's how I did it.

Ford should've just made some reinforced square holes and used plain old carriage type bolts, kinda like the bolts holding the bumper on 😂 did a Dakota, piece a cake, made a bed dolly from old kitchen table. Mount 4 swivel casters on table top, flip over with legs up, supports bed and very easy to maneuver

The bolts were fucking miserable. Broke three t50s using a 1/2 impact. So I grinded all of the bolts off and used the ones from the donor bed
@motorcarnut2 жыл бұрын
That’s the hardest part. When you install the other bolts in put a lot of waterproof grease on the bolts. The torx bolts have no torque for such a long and usually rusted bolt. They’re ridiculous, why not normal hex bolts countersunk in the bed.
