Never slept in a hammock. I dont like to feel restricted and I roll from side to side in bed. Obviously I dont know if this would be an issue. I have been tempted by the hoop bivi and a tarp. Very impressed with the Firebox and how it cooked that steak, probably the knack is waiting for the coals to be right. Smashing short video thank you for sharing.
@Adventure-Outdoors5 жыл бұрын
Cheers Graham! Hammock camping is definitely an acquired taste, Tris hates it pretty much for the same reasons you mentioned so she's not interested in coming with me anymore. I guess a bivi and tarp setup is probably more comfortable and versatile for most people. Yeah the Firebox is great 👍.

@Adventure-Outdoors5 жыл бұрын
Cheers Cliff! Wild camping is definitely the way to go, especially if you're looking for real tranquility. The DD tarps are also great, you do lose some of the comfort of a tent but it's a much better experience 👍 Ride safe mate.

Just stumbled on this vid. Thanks! It’s great! By the way, if you ever get caught without an underquilt again, pull your gear sling up against the bottom of your hammock and stick your jacket/spare clothing inside that instead of compressing it under your body in the hammock; it sometimes works. I’m in the tropics, but it still gets ‘cold’ in the wee hours over here (by cold, I mean a chilly 20 degrees Centigrade: which IS chilly after you’ve acclimatized!). Another tip I’ve heard of but not tried, is to lower the tarp edges almost to the ground (to trap more heat/stop underdrafts) and lay hot rocks, heated in the fire, on the ground under your hammock. Signing up to your channel.

Ah man, that's such bad luck, If I had a pound thinking its so warm in the day time, forgetting how the temperatures can drop at night out in the wild. I now have both the DD under quilt and SnugPak. The the SnugPak is excellent value. You can easily mix and match with them. When using both together in in the coldest nights, I was well toasty :) look forward to more vids
@Adventure-Outdoors5 жыл бұрын
Cheers Gary! yeah I get frustrated at myself, every summer I wake up shivering but never seem to learn the lesson! The SnugPak quilt looks good, I currently have the DD Jura II sleeping bag which has worked well in the winter but it's still a hassle to get in and out even with the centre zip. 👍

You ALWAYS want to have something to insulate the hammock from below, best would be a proper down underquilt. 3 big luggage boxes for an overnight camp - thats lots of space to not take proper insulation. If its too warm you can always vent, if its too cold you will always be miserable.
@oceansoverland5 жыл бұрын
Looking good there by the loch. Would a 4x4 be permissible through the gates? First time for me too in a hammock at the weekend, in many years, down at Tyningham. Must make more of an effort to get out in it.
@discovering_adventures5 жыл бұрын
Yes. We did one of these forest roads last year - you pay a small fee to drive the road. There are several places to pull off the road around the loch 👍🏼
@oceansoverland5 жыл бұрын
@@discovering_adventures thanks for the info, will need to look into that to see where you enter and pay.
@Adventure-Outdoors5 жыл бұрын
@@oceansoverland You can get onto it from the A762, next to Bennan Cottage, it's £2 for a parking ticket. The main car park is at Otters Pool along the route but there are 'no overnight parking' signs there, but there's plenty of small lay-by's as Mark says with no signs. I think the better route is the Carrick Forest Drive, if you put 'Stinchar Bridge' into google maps you'll see the start of the route heading east, the road takes you to Loch Doon which in my experience has always been rammed full of wild campers on summer weekends, but I've camped on the forest drive with the Hilux before with no problems.

Love this, dont suppose you have a grid reference of were you camped? To get to the forest do you have to come anti clockwise round loch doon or is there a way south of loch Doon? Thanks, love this.
@Adventure-Outdoors4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, I was on the Raiders Road here. There are two ways to get on to it; from the north the road starts at the bottom of Loch Bradan just where the river dee leaves the loch on the A712. You can also get onto the road just north of Mossdale on the A762 at the other end. I camped on the edge of Stroan Loch. The Carrick Forest Drive heads south from the end Loch Doon which is another great road, they can both be linked up with a run on the tarmac via Newton Stewart. 👍
