But anywho, do you think it would be too aggressive for this job, or a nice upgrade from a hairdryer? Anyway great channel, I’m enjoying all the cb content. And thats a Wrap! You did that so go I thought you had done it before. The shape of that tank is a problem. I have thought about doing my tank it has a bad jacket zipper scrach on it. But I would have to sand it smooth so it wouldn't show through the wrap? Replacement tank painted about $900.00. Anyway good job man!
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 жыл бұрын
I've had a few attempts on other bike bits, but this tank was the biggest challenge yet! I had a scratch on my FZ1 tank and it didn't show too badly through the wrap. Perhaps with a textured vinyl, it'll hide even more?
@avry87
@avry87 2 жыл бұрын
For an amateur was not too bad, actually. But, tbh, I'm curious how the edges are holding since then. 1st, brushed look vinyls can be very challenging anyway, it must be tackled carefully to keep the lines nice and not distorted. 2nd, trying do wrap in one piece a bike tank is another big challenging job. 3rd practice is a good teacher 😉 If you want my advice, for a future wrap, - place the tank on a stand, so it gives you access to work easily on the bottom, - ask a friend for help, much easy to work in 2 (3 even better) - heat the vinyl with a proper heat gun, to 50° - pre-stretch the vinyl then place it on the top and try to mold it to the shape of the tank - while you are doing this, be careful not to over-stretch the vinyl !! - heat the vinyl on the recessed areas, so the memory of the film will shrink it back to the original state ( like this you won't have so much material to work with and trying to get rid of it) - try not to over heat and keep stretching the vinyl, to avoid stretch marks and glue lines - go with the vinyl under the tank so it gives you a inner peace that won't start to peel off with time. Voila!
@avry87
@avry87 2 жыл бұрын
And another thing, when you are heating the material to stick it in a recessed area, don't stick it from the middle, as you will put too much tension in the vinyl. Instead work it in from the lowest tension point to the highest tension point. Hope it makes sense
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Good tips. I don’t think I’ll be doing it again in a hurry though! I did however watch on the official 3M tutorials that they recommended heating and then working from the middle of a recess outwards as this spreads the tension across the space, instead of causing it to ramp up the further you go.

Andy, what was the finishing strip you placed on the edge when it was done? Regular desk tape?

It was just a strip of the same stuff, cut to about 10mm thick.

The question I always have on these wrapping / mod videos is.. why? Why does he have a travel hair dryer?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 жыл бұрын
The question you always have is ‚why does he have a travel hairdryer?‘ seems a bit specific 😜 In any case, the answer is because a travel hair dryer is what i have. The overall why question is explained in the intro to the video. To protect the tank while simultaneously giving it a brushed metal look.

Good effort 👍🏻 it would have been in a crumpled up ball in the bin if I’d have tried that. I have though about doing the lid of my topbox in a similar brush metal finish to hid a few wee scratches and better match my bike. But that vid reminds me of the faffage of it.

Do you recommend emptying the tank before removal, or is the rag in the filler hole sufficient?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 жыл бұрын
100% recommend draining the fuel. More due to the weight than the risk of fire! I had to carry it up 5 flights of stairs, so any weight saving was welcome. But even removing the tank from the bike is easier when it doesn't weigh an extra 16Kg or so on top of the weight of the steel!

@@AndyManCam Thanks Andy, I want to wrap a plastic tank and I ain't got no stairs, but sound advice nontheless. Your tank looks good from here, but I guess it depends on how much of a perfectionist you are!

I know that you have already wrapped the tank, but I'm assuming that the marks you talk about are rub marks on the fuel tank sides, hence why you put the R and G stuff on, but you can machine polish the marks out, as its only on the clear coat, much easier to look after than wrapping the tank like this....but each to their own.....👍👍
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think they are just in the clearcoat. This was more of an attempt to stop them getting any worse TBH. That it's happened after just 1 year of ownership despite me being pretty careful about zips and seams on the paintwork worried me a lot!
