One thing that I'd recommend while vinyl wrapping is using a winter glove as a sort of squeegee, helps smooth slightly more intricate parts with your fingers and will help protect your hand if you're using a heatgun.

Wrapping is tricky. I did my white side panels on my KLX. First timer. Did ok. Thankfully it’s a camp print. LOL. Hides the few imperfections. But an overall improvement on appearance. My cut tape lifted off as I adjusted the wrap. Panel was properly cleaned but I made due. Definitely have to pin down the piece you are working on. Thanks for your help.

I decided early on that trying to match the grain would be a frustrating and long winded affair! I also had limited vinyl, so I just gave up before I started and used in whatever direction it worked!! I think I’ll be changing it soon anyway. Good luck with your wrap. It’s a great way to change up your bike, but maintain the ability to just change it again later!!

I always wrap my bikes, see my most favorite in my avatar although the wheels were plasti dipped. The best trick I have learnt is that if you are faced with a panel that is near impossible to single wrap and you have to do the wrap in sections, then look for a way to create a design that means you can be lazy and just use a different color and make look like it was meant to be :) I also found that so long a the scratch is not too deep the wrap covers scratches very well with no effort. If it is deep just fill it, smooth it, wrap it. The pro version of the wrap cut is better, it has a stickier back enabling you to do curves more accurately. EDIT: Tension and Stretching are both your friend and your enemy. EDIT EDIT: Umm you should have done the sides first, you want the edge to be facing down that way when anyone standing in front or the side of your bike will not see the edge so easily. Also if you are working with two colors the edge will have risk of getting dirty and it will stand out more if the edge is facing upwards. EDIT EDIT EDIT: Carbon or any textured wrap is the hardest to do... you did pretty good for your first go... try matt next time, it is much more forgiving :) QUADRUPLE EDIT: If you follow CKWrap's guidance you should pull the tape at a 90 degree angle , I think in some places you were leading it which can create a dodgy edge, but the wavy parts you mentioned maybe where parts of the tape pulled away or got stretched away when you were wrapping. BLAH EDIT: check this out kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2HUgIKZfql6q80 ;)

It's a good idea and I've tried it before. The problem is that the vinyl is very coarsely textured. So the tape doesn't make good contact around the texturing and quickly comes off.

Thanks CV. I’d have to say i disagree. For my bike at least, i reckon i could cover the whole thing for about 50-70€. Compare that against the cost of a respray and it’s many many times cheaper. Of course, the way that you have done it is very dependent on Availability of the Panels for your model of bike. Forgetting also that you can’t get a cheap petrol tank from China to swap out with the season! 😜

If you don't like how the edges join, you could always use some pin striping tape over the edges in a contrasting color... Maybe if the bike was red and you were putting a black carbon fiber vinyl wrap on it, you could use some very narrow red pin strips on your edges as accents? Just like we don't expect the people who put sheetrock on walls to have perfect fit along the bottoms of the walls or around the doors and they use trim pieces / moldings instead.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 жыл бұрын
I'm with you there. Problem with this stuff is that it's textured, so the pinstriping doesn't really stick as well as it would on a smooth vinyl. So eventually it starts to peel off. Could be that I did it badly, but hey, just an amateur!

Hi, very good job. A little question? Is a professional vinyl or a commercial one? From the video I do not understand if you have cut flush with the film or you have overlapped at least an inch, because in the first case, very easily the film will retreat and discover the bottom. Thanks a lot.

So if I was to do this on the gas tank of my own motorcycle, not buying a new or used one. What safety issues are there with using a heat gun on/near an object that holds highly flammable fuel and explosive vapors? I want to wrap my tank, but I also don't want to suffer a fire or explosion.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 5 жыл бұрын
Naturally due to logistical reasons (i live on the 5th floor with no elevator) i did this with a completely empty tank. Also I used a hairdryer rather than a heat gun or a blowtorch, so the heat generated here was much less. Of course if you wanted to be completely sure, you could just empty the tank completely and then leave it open (in a well ventilated area) for a day or two so that ALL of the fuel evaporates out. It goes without saying that I’m no expert and you do this all at your own risk! ☠️

Cheers Mark. I think single pieces is certainly a clever way to start. Otherwise you may just destory all motivation for future projects!! Yeah the vinyl is available in larger dimensions. How does vinyl wrap keep moisture from underneath the plastic and burning thru the clearcoat? I had clear vinyl scratch protector on top of my tank and moisture burned thru pinholes on the factory clearcoat and rusted under the color coat.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 5 жыл бұрын
If there's moisture underneath the plastic, then something has gone wrong in the installation! I had vinyl coverings for years on both my last 2 bikes and when I removed them, the paint was like new underneath. Except for the great big scratch on the versys tank after a crash. But even then, the metal was still silver and shiny.

Wouldnt it make more since to post heat before you pulled the filament? Genuinely curious
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 5 жыл бұрын
Not really, because when you pull the filament, it stretches the vinyl a tiny bit. If you post heat before this, then you kill the ability of the vinyl to return to its original form and you end up with a very slight rippled and baggy seam!
