I’m from India 🇮🇳 and I own a GS310 there and had taken it for a 3000km trip around the country. Really awesome motorcycle, good suspension and great handling. The main downfall is the 11.5 litre fuel tank. In Australia that may not be enough to explore the outback country.

Ah but it has good fuel economy so a small fuel bladder would be fine.

I don't believe that the 310 was made for this purpose. It has many limitations to be able to do the things ''we'd like it to do with aplomb'' . It's a great city bike and is a great first bike to own. But for more experienced riders who want a versatile bike one would need to look at a considerably more expensive and capable machine like the Tenere 700 or the Transalp. The soon to be introduced Himalayan 450 will take the middle ground. Hopefully RE will have better suspension on the bile than the rudimentary components they currently have on their range of bikes.

@@bhoogewerf2823with the upgraded Rally Raid suspension it can be just as capable (for non professional riders at least) as the T7 off-road with the added benefit of being much lighter and still cheaper. It’s lack of power is definitely evident on-road but off-road it’s quite similar to a dual sport with regard to power delivery. It’s a solid foundation for an Adv bike but it’s obvious where and why BMW cut costs; with more power, better suspension and a larger tank, it would’ve eaten into the sales of the F750/F800/F850.

I have over 25,000 km of off road travel on mine and it is a bomb proof reliable long distance off road bike. My BMW riding group is made up of all sorts of bikes 1250 GS, 850’s and lots of non BMW’s. My G310GS generally out performs the bigger bikes in all conditions excelling mountain passes at high speed where it definitely have the power of the bigger bikes. Fantastic value.

I wish BMW offered a G310GS Adventure version with a 5 gallon fuel tank, tubeless spoke wheels, an aluminum bash plate, engine protection bars, larger more aggressive pegs, and fully adjustable suspension front and rear. Those upgrades would cost BMW less than $400 and I'd pay $2000 more for that bike. I think they don't do that because they see the baby GS as getting new riders on the upgrade path to more expensive ADV bikes. They don't want a more capable G310GS taking sales away from the 850GS and 1300GS. I added many of these upgrades. I'm old so I don't ride hard off road any more so I'm OK with the softer suspension and alloy rims. The only feature I want that I can't add is the larger fuel tank. There is no aftermarket tank for the baby GS.
@dashuntas.m4045
@dashuntas.m4045 Жыл бұрын
A LOT of so called journalists wrote the baby Beemer off based on it’s specs sheet meanwhile most people who’ve actually ridden it have generally been positive about it. Too many people judged it based on what it could’ve been rather than what it actually is.

I've always had small dual sport thumpers. I bought a G310GS for my 60th birthday and I love it. I never wanted a heavy bike, on road or off road, but now that I'm older it's not even an option. I ride a lot slower off road than Dave and Clubby and the soft suspension and alloy rims are not a problem for me.

Sad to say I aged out of my BMW 1200GS and Husqvarna 701. I’m 74 and can no longer pick them up. The 310 looks nice but I want to take a look at that new Triumph 400 Scrambler. I need to be able to do 70-75 mph occasionally and perform my own maintenance. Still looking and researching.

Hi Dave and Clubby, I've had my 310 GS for 2 years and 20 000 + km and it has been utterly reliable. I did put on bash plate, engine bars, bark busters and more off road tires . I have recently taken it through Kara, Kara Park (Vic.) and Mount Terrible in the Victorian High Country. Everything you said about this bike is true. It will do it all!

I'm two months shy of having my G310GS for three years and it's been 100% reliable. I do the scheduled maintenance myself and it's been cheap to keep. I did the mods you listed and a few more - GPS tracker in the beak, a 10 inch Samsung tablet for a large screen GPS mounted over a waterproof Pelican glove box, etc. I'm still adding little farkles here and there but I love my G310GS.

Great review guys! My little review- Recently rode this bike in India last week. TVS n BMW have done a very good job. The engine is peach! Reminded me of old/current TVS engines - bullet proof even when your pushing it hard. Easy handling esp for learners and experienced alike. Was able cruise at about 120-130km/hr without a hitch on the highways. Did bottom out the front end multiple times on heavy braking though. I'd take this bike any day off road over the kTM 390.

Perfect timing guys👍 Dave, after watching your last review of the 310gs, with Amy a few years ago. My wife chose the 310gs as her first bike in over thirty years. It's a '22 Rallye, with the same crash bars and bash plate as these. It has 2k km on it now, and she absolutely loves it. Her (the bike) name is Beverley ! We did an off road adv rider training course on the weekend, and she gained much confidence in both her, and the bikes, ability on dirt. What you guys have just done on them will be great to show her just how capable it can be off road. I have a T7, but I love riding the baby GS......such an easy, and fun little bike to ride 👍👍

Couldn't agree more with your assessment of where this bike fits in with new ADV riders. It makes no sense to jump in to the mix with a 500-600 pound rig when you have little experience off tarmac. As a comparison, you wouldn't take someone new to firearms to the range and hand them a 44 Magnum as their first hand gun. Start with a .22 cal revolver, gain confidence and graduate from there. Only wish I had known about starting small and light back in 2013 as my Aprilia Caponord was far too much bike for my limited skills. Still have my 640 Adventure and appreciate its versatility while accepting its limitations. If the retirement winds are favorable, I'd love to take a crack at the Bridal Trail in the coming years. Have always appreciated your content, Dave and Clubby!

The Little GS is a very underrated bike. In a previous thread you had a makeover team switch out the exhaust and the wheels and do the suspension. But we been involved in a couple of challenges over the years the 10K challenge when you had 10K to get a bike and a set of gear or upgrades to the value of 10K then do 10,000 km over a year with friends and I must say the BMW 310 & KTM 390 are excellent value and I would say perform better over the long term.

Great video and great bike, however I think the best direct competitor is the Versys-X 300. The Kawasaki is so often overlooked and even forgotten when it comes to mentions. My GF has the Versys-X and I have a little time on the BMW being a tech at the Kawasaki and BMW dealer. They are very similar feeling but each have distinct pros and cons. A true head to head is sorely lacking on KZbin. Quick points nodding to the Kawasaki: better shock (slightly worse fork), better at high speeds and better wind protection. ✌🏻✊🏻

Another excellent video Dave, Clubby and team! Been waiting for these and I quite enjoyed it. Owning one myself I agree with your review of the bike of its cons. None the less its quite fun to ride and being a bit lighter can help build confidence and get you further and to gnarlier terrain not worring of dropping it and not being able to pick it up. Keep up the awesome work team. Greetings from NZ

Hi Dave and Clubby. Great Video. I think I would Love to have the 310GS to go along with my 1200GS. It would be fun to have a Smaller Bike to hit the Trails on and not worry about the Size and Weight like the Big GS. It would be perfect for a Camping Trip where the Trails are harder. Can I ask if you had any issues with your right boot hitting the heat shield on the exhaust? I just sat on the GS and my boot is just hitting the shield and I'm only a size 9 women"s US. If I scoot up a bit it just misses it, but it's really close. Was that an issue for you? I'm surprised they put the exhaust in that spot, honestly. It's the first off-road bike I've ever sat on that had the exhaust in that spot....

I've been a strong advocate for BMW making a G310GS Adventure variant with a 5 gallon fuel tank, spoke tubeless wheels, fully adjustable suspension front and rear, large aggressive off road pegs, an aluminum bash plate and engine protection bars. I'd pay US$2000 more for that bike. Maybe KTM putting spoke wheels on their 390 Adventure will get BMW to follow suit, but I think they're reluctant to put too many nice features on the G310GS because they don't want it taking sales from their 850GS and 1300GS.

Dave, I’m after a small ADV bike and I’ve narrowed it down to 2. G310GS and the 390 Adventure. I understand there’s no prefect bike, but. The G310GS seems like it has softer suspension and the more docile engine especially at higher speeds. It has higher vibrations and no abs switch off. But the rest seems perfect, from 2021 onwards. The 390 has the reliability issue clearly stated on all the forums but in every other way seems to be the better more fun bike. Minus the pegs, the fact you need higher revs off road and double the service interval. Out of curiosity seeing you have tested both extensively, if it was your hard earned money, which direction would you lean? I’m leaning towards the BMW but I feel from watching both your episodes, you would go for the KTM?

It is hard knowing as I do want it for adventure off roading and you can’t test ride them in that condition. Consumers do heavily rely on KZbin videos like yours who have tried and tested both, no one more extreme than yourself. I’ll keep researching until I come to a final decision. BTW you are giving me ktm energy with your reply. Thank you again Dave.

Excited for your next 501 build video. I’ve started getting the parts in for my 501 and as most have found the Seat Concepts seat is high on the list of must haves, at least at my age. 😂 I see that Taco Moto did a fix for the IMS tank rubbing on the cylinder head.
