Have a 2017 with minimal electronics which suits me well. Mine is armored for off road and I beat the crap out of it. At 63 years old it has become my go to therapy. Just wish it was easier to pick up off the ground but the weight disappears in the saddle. Love mine and continue to enjoy Honda reliability. It’s amazing how well it works off road. As usual, great review. Thanks mates

Picking up the DCT 2022 ATAS ES in about two weeks and looking forward to it. Moved from a CRF250l to a NC750X DCT and rode a DCT ATAS and loved it off-road. Getting a foot shifter for the DCT and that helped a lot. Thanks for this thorough review!

Still travelling with my „old“ standard Crf1100 from 2020. So far, it never let me down on my now 6month journey and DCT is lovely, even off-road. Suspension was a bit soft, but perfectly adjustable for me. For me it is almost the perfect RTW-bike, even though i wish it would be a bit lighter. It’s a good cruiser as well. Looks like the 2022 AT is even better! Nice video! 👍

I thought it worth mentioning that the Adventure Sports also comes in manual transmission and non electronic suspension and here in New Zealand the price difference is standard model (manual) $25995 vs Adventure Sports (manual) $27995...not a huge difference. For that you get the heated grips, larger fuel range, slightly better weather protection, adjustable wind shield and LED cornering lights. The way to think about the power, engine braking and traction control levels is to think about varying levels of intervention. The ergos of the Africa Twin is fantastic.

The AT is a very serious candidate as the ideal off-road biased litre+ ADV platform. It's arguably more dependable or at least easier and cheaper to maintain than the usual comparable suspects from BMW and KTM and despite the latters' obvious power/torque advantage, one really has to ask, what exactly will most riders ever do with all those additional horses especially on the dirt? Looking forward to this review.

I feel the bike sits in a very interesting position where it competes in multiple classes. For one, it competes with the 'mid weight' ADVs, especially the T7. Both ADVs with Japanese reliability, one a bit more leaning towards road the other towards dirt. Standouts for me were the fit and finish, options like cruise control and quick shifter, build in navigation with android auto and very comfortable seated position. I feel it can do similar things to the T7 offroad, but it will just cost you more effort. Secondly it competes with the bigger tourer machines (tiger 1200, GS etc). Still enough power to do touring and carry luggage, but not so much to seriously compromise the offroadability. For me personally it strikes a good balance for road/dirt, whilst still being able to do comfortable long distance touring with pillion. It really feels like the 'do it all' kind of motorcycle.
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV 2 жыл бұрын
I feel it's closer to the T7 in terms of performance. Certainly has better standard suspension. The T7 is top heavy so the slight difference in weight evens up with the T7s higher centre of gravity.

Good review guys. I had a bit of time on a friends 2017 AT standard manual model a few years back and I liked it, but wasn't ready to get a new bike just yet. Then this past fall I got to put a couple hundred miles on a 2022 AT standard with manual transmission and I was in love with that bike! My bike has to be a commuter for work and a master of the highway too. My trip to work is 32 miles/50km of gravel road every day during the riding season and the 2022 AT can run a gravel road and be super sure footed doing so, it's an amazing motorcycle. As soon as the 23's were available to order this past fall I ordered one! I ordered the Adventure Sports with manual transmission. I will shift my own gears till hell freezes over, I want to be the one in total control. It should be arriving at my dealer around the end of January from what I'm told, I won't be brining it home till probably about the end of the first week in April, that's generally about when my riding season starts here, I'm looking forward to it. You mentioned that your bikes there came equipped standard with a centre stand, they don't here. I had to shell out another $350.00 for that, it's sitting in my garage now waiting to be installed when I get my bike home. Also another positive in my opinion for the Africa Twin is that it will run fine on regular 87 octane gas compared to most of the other big adventure bikes requiring premium fuel. I am taking a long trip this summer and I will be doing good to get regular gas let alone premium. My trip this summer will be really close to 10000km/6200 miles, I am so looking forward to spending some quality bonding time with my new bike. Cheers guys!

Thinking of the Adv Sports with quick shift, also has tubeless tires plus the mileage. I've had DCT for over 17 yrs. on my Honda ATV's. Hell, it works great. No issue. Great video and detailed rational explanations, thank you. Got my standard version 6 weeks ago. Design, engine punch are great, hopefully reliability too. I concur with your comments, a few liters more would have been welcome and the electronic controls are anti-ergonomic, including the inversion of turn signal and horn, and cruise on the throttle hand side.

Thank you for the video. Looks really good. Some things that I noticed, you actually ride on least power (more blue is less power) and you can turn wc and tc totally off if you hold the toggle switch on the left cluster to the left (it changes to 0). Also on the abs, you can set it to only front wheel by holding the same. These options are only possible to change in user modes 1 or 2 and the most detailed screen (gold screen)

Own the CRF1100L and had so much fun on it. It handles great on the bitumen, better than I expected and confidence-inspiring on the gravel. I haven't taken it down trails like in your test as I'm still running the stock tires and it's been very wet. I think the motor is one of the best that I have encountered, great usable power and enough to put a smile on the dial. I'm not a 100% about the seat, probably the only thing that I may upgrade. Anyway, loved your initial thoughts and picked up a few tips to regarding the suspension adjustment.

Enjoyed your review - I own a 2020 AT (basic model) and found your assessment to be honest and accurate. BTW, the reason there are two screens is so that you can still see speed and fuel when the top screen is being used for other things, (for example navigation) when vitals are not displayed although you need a compatible head set to use the TFT screen for navigation, music etc. Simon

The AT has a double HUD and Apple/Android car. This means you can hook up your phone and still have the vitals on the lower display. You can essentially eliminate the need to buy a dedicated gps. So, you get to use all your favorite apps on the top screen and retain vital on the bottom. No other bike has this ability.

Just last month I was able to pack up the bike boat and family to the mountains , a wonderful time . Found out what real dirt tires can do on that Tenere . The only tips I can give from my 2022 model is to set up all of the ride displays in the same format. I got tired of searching in different spots for the same information, and on some screens the info isn’t there anyway. The default ride mode for the DCT lugs the revs to low in reduced power modes, unridable. Go straight to sport shift level 2, all of the time.

I have a 2007 KTM 990S (265mm suspension non ABS one) which I love dearly as it suits my height/weight. Thinking about getting a newer bike. Rode the AT1100 standard at Dave Thorpe UK and liked it but felt cramped (36inch inseam) and suspension wayyy too soft in standard settings (105kg). Also, want a Norden with xplor pro or a new 1290R. Im no expert rider but can push these beasts a bit on 80%off road biased tires. What would you recommend?

Well firstly the AT suspension is not soft when tuned. We have tested the latest 1290 so have alook at our review. The Norden is outstanding with the expensive suspension. The standard version is now about the weight of the T7 World Raid, with a higher price, but with a lot more refinements in terms of TC and suspension. Here in Europe, the standard version with a quick shifter is very popular and, frankly, compared to KTM and BMW pricing, it is not expensive. I feel this to be the almost perfect compromise, if you don't just want a light, dirt oriented enduro bike, like the CRF or the WRF. If I were to go on a long tour, I would certainly prefer the Honda.

His exhaust are reasonably priced as well. I'm not exactly sure when I'll be getting my AT, but when I do find it, the first thing I want on it is the Diablo. I know where one is right now. The dealership is roughly 350 miles away from me. Honda added a 200 dollar destination fee to the bike. On top of that, there's a 9.25 % sales tax. Then I'll probably be spending a little over 200 dollars on fuel to go and pick it up. Anyway, I've decided to wait until a dealership closer to me can get one in. Another thorough and insightful review from MAD TV👍. As a 72kg weight and 175cm height rider how would the standard Africa Twin vs standard T7 feel in terms of weight distribution and general handling off-road? I just sold a 2012 R1200GS with the goal of an easier off-road experience but to still have a reasonable travel capability. I road a T7 in Botswana for 3 weeks and a pretty positive experience in a wide range of conditions. Considering the T7, Aprilia Tuareg, DesertX and Africa Twin as replacements.
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV 2 жыл бұрын
The suspension on the 2022 AT is superior to the standard T7, if your pushing reasonably hard in the dirt. No doubt the RAID Yamaha will have better suspension. Both handle excellently for their size. But considering the imminent arrival of those other models you mention I think it is a time for waiting.

Thanks for the review Dave, and also all the other vids you put together. Really looking forward to another dose of Nugget. After two 1200GS I switched to a Red 2020 AT standard about 12 months ago, really love the look and sound of the AT. To have the same throttle settings On/Off road I have configured the two user modes, and that works well, and with the favorite button setup for TC I don't need to use the other buttons much, and even started using Apple carplay to replace the Zumo. If you wouldn't mind, please let me know what your weight is and the suspension settings you used for rebound and compression. Thnaks.

My reasons are that the S10 has less complexity (though the Honda has reliability, as does the S10) and a shaft drive (for what I want to do) The only thing that the S10 lacks for my needs is a 21 inch front wheel. I believe you'll find the fuel bars on display to be pessimistic. Fuel consumption is a displayed parameter and appears to be much more accurate/useful. I've owned my bike (Base, Manual) for one week now, and filled tank once. Display showed only 2 of 9 bars, but I was only able to put 2.7 US gallon in it. Approximately 45% full, yet display at only 2 bars. Trust the consumption and data on Gold display and don't experience fuel anxiety.

Great review, I have a 2020 adv sports, no dct, no ES, as this all adds weight and cost, this is a big bulky bike and takes a little while to get used to the bulk, i am 185cm tall and this bike is not that easy to get on and off, gripes, well there are a few, the engine has no torque below 2000/2500rpm, very poor for a modern engine and for 1100cc 105hp is pretty mediocre, 125hp would be nice, this is an adventure bike and there is no storage for tools, puncture repair, etc, the calculated fuel range is a bit iffy, not convinced it is very accurate, that front seat section is an atrocious design, getting it back on in the right position is fiddly and time consuming, air filters are not easily accessible, you need to remove all the front plastics to get at them with the risk of breaking the clips, this has an el cheapo cable clutch, my 21yo 1200s bandit has a hydraulic one, positives, the electronics are good once you figure them out, good fuel range, comfortable, good weather protection, great gravel road tourer, stable and predictable

Hi Dave certainly enjoying your and Clubby review, This video i made not long after I nutted out how to navigate through all the settings may be helpful, TC ,ABS and how to set up each different screen mode, Gold Silver Bronze. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWfFn2yGj6aqmJY . I am on a 2020 AS with manual suspension. Takes a bit to gel with. I agree with your comments on the ABS package, it has taken me awhile to adapt my braking and get used to the front brake., especially after coming from the bigger KTM 1190, I have found now that I actually dont use many of those 14 buttons and change things to much. I have each ride mode set to the Gold Screen so I can see everything I need to change. I love the bike its comfy and easy to ride and doesn't feel like its pulling my arms out all day, Very good manners off road. Biggest pain I have with the bike is that it wont save the TC and ABS settings if you turn the bike off at the key or dump it and have to restart. Keep up the great content mate . Brent NZ
