After owning the Duke390 for 2 years I finally trade in for the Kawa Z400...No regrets..Yes the Duke is torquey from low rpm which is good for city riding..But again lose juice around 90mph and with the counterbalance shaft againts vibration its quite struggling at 95mph on long freeways...I used to ride bigger bikes but again the Kawa is something i feel more confident for long rides with my wife..Can’t deny the looks goes to KTM but again reliability and cheap parts is my preferences

@@PartnerthedogI wish everyone would get experience in the dirt before their road going days. Less people would be crashing. As your skill increases you will be starting to want a bit more. It's inevitable. A six hundred would be a better choice. You're going there eventually. If you have the knowledge of what to do, how to control a bike so that you do not drop it while maneuvering at very slow speed, it's the same if you gained ten pounds, or one thousand pounds. You get used to the weight and handle it accordingly. There are little adjustments to make because of the mass, but it's easy A half a ton of Honda Gold Wing is light as soon as you are underway. It is still mammoth, but mammoth is fun too. Maybe your next bike is going to be a liter bike. Just get the training and you'll be just fine. But you won't be soon wishing for more.

I just bought a 2019 KTM Duke 390 as my first bike Wednesday... I have done every bit of research I could on all the suggested beginners bikes but it’s funny that the KTM was the bike I saw that got me itching for a motorcycle. I kept going back and forth on buying a used vs new, private or dealer, and ultimately decided on opting for the KTM when I got a hell of a deal. I got a 2019 KTM 390 Duke Brand new, zero miles for WTD price of $4500. It was a no brainer. I love the bike. I already added a wind screen as she’s going to be my commuter on most days. Gonna throw on a slip on later down the road but the biggest issue I am having is the seat height. I’m 5”6/5”7 chick and I am fine with everything BUT mounting. The Duke wants to sit up right and she likes to sit high. Problem is that when I mount her and go to place my right leg over she wants to buck you off and tip onto the right side. I’m buying a adjustable side stand which hopefully will resolve the issue and make it easier for me to get on with a better lean angle. If need be I will have her lowered as well. Point being... if you’re interested in the Duke and 5”8 and under, be prepared to do some mods to ride comfortably, especially if this is your first bike. I am have a lot of fun and regret nothing but I know I could’ve had them lower it and throw it into my purchase price. Oh well. Lesson learned. For the money, KTM knocked it out of the park. ABS, traction control, Slipper Clutch, Upside down Fork, LEDs, the display and of course the tech on this bike is sick. I love that it has Bluetooth and I can upload my directions/maps on to it, listen to music as well as answer calls, all at the tips of my fingers. The ability to turn abs off, or go supermoto, and the track feature is cool. It’s a great bike, highly recommend. I did test drive a Duke before buying but apparently they changed the seat height and I thought it was still 30”... well it’s really 32” on my years. Great review guys.

The Duke being a single cylinder is going to need a new top end every so often, its just the nature of the beast. The bike it self is cheap but KTM parts are very expensive compared to Kawasaki parts. Something to be aware of before buying one. EDIT: THIS IS FOR U.S. BUYERS. The ways tariffs are Japanese bikes are ALWAYS CHEAPER then the European bikes in the states.

The 390 Duke we have at around like $3700 and the Ninja 400 at around $7500. The Z400 isn't yet released here. Though there is a HUGE price margin gap between these two here. Great video as always. One of the better reviews online. I like the way you guys leave subjective opinions out of the mix and don't just talk about yourselves... Refreshing. I'm an experienced rider and I USED to own a couple Yamaha 1981 RD350LCs. The power to weight ratio (read FUN Ratio) is right close to these subjects. I sold the Yamaha(s) because by the time you get into the power band, the law enforcement overkill will ensure you lose your license and there's just NO way to ride an LC legally.... I always liked the ER6N, which was the closest thing to the LC in pure "feel" a little bit buzzy and a little bit twitchy and just about the same performance. But I have always had a soft spot for the Duke 390 and this review points out the Duke's advantages. looking at the aftermarket power commanders and so forth on the Duke forums it would seem that after overcoming the emissions tuning of the bike, there will be an acceptable level of fun and performance in the Duke. I think I'll be purchasing a 390 real soon. I didn't hear anything convincing about the ABS and the quick shifter, although I don't believe that is stock in the US. Also, I don't recall you guys mentioning the slipper clutch.

If you core drill out the baffle/db killer in the exhaust it sounds a lot better too without being too loud/obnoxious. I love it. Awesome bike, looks cool, handles really well and is really easy to ride in traffic and on a faster windy road. The tyres are okay but they wear out very quickly so you’ll have to factor that in. I had to replace mine at 4,000km and I put on Michelin Road 6’s that are supposed to last a very long time have great grip in dry and wet.

Every Kawasaki I’ve owned has been absolutely perfect in regards to reliability, although I’m sure that could be said for most Japanese bikes. Currently I have a 2005 Kawasaki Z1000 and it does everything I need it to. I can’t imagine getting another bike in the next 5-10 years, that’s how much I love and trust it. Not sure. Would have to evaluate all the nuance differences between the Duke and RC. The RC is still behind the times cohesively. It's got a lot of ignored bits and pieces that need updated. I'd buy a Duke over the RC as things sit right now, easily. But, that sensibility factor in the back of my mind knowing that a Kawasaki motorcycle just isn't going to give any trouble and can be trusted for well past 100k miles with proper maintenance? Hard to get away from that, in spite the character differences. Just hope Japan gets off its proverbial butt and starts making interesting reliable machines akin to the good stuff Europe has been churning out in the last decade, especially in the sub 1000cc sport market. I've got a unmodified '18 MT-09 right now, and that 790 Duke is really calling to me. I'm hoping to get a test drive this year.

These mods turned it into a different bike. It now redlines just under 10k. I giggle every time I get on it but with that said, it's so light that passing 18 wheelers on the highway at 75-85mph can be like going into a wind-tunnel sideways. Wondering if the peeps "complaining" about KTM reliability have A). Seen one in person; or B). Ridden one; or C). Owned one; or D). Known someone who owned one. I have owned 10 KTM's of every type and genre since 2008. ONE freak issue with a wiring loom on my 1190 Adventure. It took awhile to find and fix the issue. I got a bit testy. So--KTM GAVE me a Alpinestars Adventure jacket worth $850. Now I wear that jacket when it is a bit cooler on my: 1290 Adventure S; my Superduke 1290 R; My SMC R 690; And my XCF 250. And live happily ever after. Except I want the 690 Endure now, too. I TRIED to own and enjoy other brands--most lately a beautiful Triumph Thruxton 1200 (And some Ducatis and a 1000 Tuono along the way too. THAT bike worried me a bit for reliability: warm-start cam chain rattle....gauge lighting "browning out" intermittently.....hot start issues.....25 MPG/fill-up every 100 miles...). And the Triumph--it WAS....nice. Nice and boring. Traded it in for the SMC R 690. I put more miles on that SMC R 690 bike in 3 weeks than I did the Triumph in 3 months. Your results may vary--but do the naysayers ACTUALLY have any personal results to question what seems an age-old, knee-jerk comment on KTM reliability/reputation? Pretty sure the consumer reliability results say BMW and Ducati tend to be the Euro shitters.

The reliability issues people mention are not with ALL KTMs, only the Indian-built 390 series of bikes (and others like 200, 125 etc built in India). I test rode a Duke 390 and RC390 about two weeks ago and they are hella fun, but I asked the dealer where the used duke 390 he had on his website was (it wasnt it the showroom) and he said he gave it as a temp loaner to an owner of a duke 390 that was being fixed under warranty. Coincidence? He also was interested in telling me that they are very quick to service or fix any issues I might have. Maybe the reliability of the 390s has improved, but I wouldnt risk my money on it. About your larger KTMs - no one is disputing overall KTM reliability, just the smaller cheaper bikes which are built to a price. Dont be so defensive 😄

They did have a lot of issues with the bikes being raced, and some with the very early bikes. The problem was how KTM North America dealt with the problems. It was so bad that you had to sue them to deal with the issues. If you check the forums it's not difficult to find the information. But for the most part if you don't over revving the heck out of the bikes they are fine.

The biggest downfall of KTM is it's reliability. The thing about KTM is, you'd be envious of the people who own it, but you don't really want to own it. A lot of KTM owners / reviewers says that KTM is a lot more "fun" due to the engine. However, as a long time owner, a smooth and reliable engine will outshine any other engine any day. It's kind of sad because KTM makes beautiful bikes, the tech. is there, and the look is there. Again however, a motorcycle is purposed to be driven. At such a price, why bother with everything else, when you still need to improve the basics of motorcycles? It's like slapping a 1900+ abused car with heated seats, bluetooth connection, wifi access etc. when you can't drive it around reliably? Vs the Kawasaki (or other competitors honestly), the reason you're buying a 400cc bike is because you want to ride it. And at that price point, you *JUST* want to ride it, you don't want to think about the tech. needing to be updated etc. etc.

@शिरीष ರಾಮಾಯ I'd agree with you if it wasn't a compromise on the main purpose of why you bought it. To rephrase what my point is, how can a bike be fun, if you can't ride it anymore since it already broke itself?
@estoylaroca
@estoylaroca 4 жыл бұрын
@शिरीष ರಾಮಾಯ If that is your view, then I can't argue with it. I just speak in general, where people would rest easy knowing well that tomorrow, when they sit on their bike, it will run and get them to their destination. In my opinion, I don't own either, just tested it... I picked a Honda from the date of my original comment, much more reliable. It's smooth and fast, and that's what I like. If smooth and reliable is what people consider boring, then so be it. We have different perspectives of what "fun" is. My point is, what can't be argued is the statistic on reliability ratings based on quality control. I'm not saying you can't have "fun" on a KTM you get me? What I am implying is, if you plan on getting a KTM, then expect the odds of you going to a mechanic to be higher, or you should at least know how to fix a bike, which you do, so that's good for you.

I'd pick the kawi any day. I've had horrible reliabillity issues on my rc125 and considering the fact that the 390 is built in the same factory i'd rather have the kawi.

KTM. is listening and also making changes as requested by its customers, and this makes it win every type of buyers. ... I LOVE KTM ... I have a DUKE 390 - 2015 and I can say it's a war tank ... "Lightweight Rippers" SHOCK!! Motorcycle stopped using the title "beginner bikes" or "entry-level motorcycles" Kawasaki really missed their opportunity with the 400 when they decided NOT to use a 270° firing interval. Can you imagine? A 400cc twin sounding like a Ducati? Like a high strung MT-07?

Totally agree. I test rode the duke 390 and bought a ninja instead myself. Saw the Z at the dealer and can say that stripping it down to a Z it needs character to make up for the lack of fairings and sporty look - a great sound would be perfect here

@@vinerod12 In terms of quality, I think the Kawasaki is better. If you're buying new and don't mind the possibility of giving the Duke in for repairs under warranty, just go with what feels right - test ride them at a dealership to see what fits you. The Duke is a very fun bike, but too small and light for me, feels a bit like a rocket bicycle. The Kawasaki feels more refined, controlled and substantial.

The 2017 duke 390 is far more reliable than people think. I own that motorcycle and drive it daily on indian roads and indian climates. The problems I've had were the tail light keeps going bust every indian monsoon( seasonal rains that usually ends up flooding the roads). Other than that the seat is definitely harder than most motorcycles but is manageable. No other complaints that are worthy enough to moan about.

@Audittr2108
@Audittr2108 5 жыл бұрын
Dakota Harless - I’ve never ridden the Z400 but one of the reasons I got the Ninja over others was the full fairing. I use my bike to commute but if I need to go on a longer trip the extra wind protection will be very welcome. At 90 mph you’ll miss a fairing if you go for the Z. I’m not a fan of naked bikes and prefer the sports bike style, hence the Ninja purchase. Best thing is to test ride at your local dealer.
