I was one of the few lucky bastards who owned a Honda CX500 Turbo. I purchased it new in 1983. The local Honda dealer already had the new 1983 CX650 Turbo on the showroom floor with a brand new never been ridden 1982 CX500 Turbo from the last season sitting beside it. I had wanted that 500T ever since I saw one cruising the strip the summer before with the scream of the turbo spooled up & that horizontally opposed V-Twin, it was music to my ears. I also absolutely loved the looks of it. The colour scheme might be a love it or hate it kind of thing but I couldn't take my eyes off it. At any rate, I could have bought the 650T. I was aware of it's improvements & better performance, 100 HP & far less turbo lag. I just loved the colour scheme so much more on the 500 than the 650 & I liked the idea of a smaller mid-sized 500cc engine producing 82 HP. That was insane back then. So were all the other features: electronic fuel injection, dual front vented discs brakes, rear disc brake, shaft drive, alloy rims, computer controlled electronic ignition, the awesome fairing, excellent & bright huge front light, those black exhaust cans with TURBO on them, the incredible dash with a nice balance of old school analogue & electronic display (especially the Turbo boost graduating light display). Yeah, you could say I was in love & obsessed with that CX500T. I had to have it & so I did. I got it for almost $1000 off which was a huge discount but the bike was still insanely expensive for back then. Over $5000 after the discount for a 500cc bike back in 1982/83. I couldn't live without it though. That bike was with out question the best bike I have ever owned in over 45 yrs of riding. I was 20 yrs old when I bought it. It looked crazy futuristic at the time & people presumed it was a rocket fast sport bike. It was fast for a 500cc bike alright (82 HP was unheard of back then). It would beat almost any 750 at the time (I said almost because Suzuki had just come out with the first real sport bike/super bike with the Katana) & you almost wished you had a seatbelt or strap attached to the handlebars & your belt with the turbo kicked in. It took a little getting used to & some finesse but that bike was extremely rideable, quick & nimble & rock solid at high speeds (I may or may not have taken it up to 140mph on several occasions which was stupid fast for a 500cc bike) & it was easily managed & stable in the twisties. Overall, it was an excellent sport tourer, not a sport bike. I slapped a tank bag, soft panniers & a tail bag on it & rode for miles & miles & miles. It was very comfortable with a fantastic seat, mildly aggressive (for the time) but mostly neutral riding position. perfect handle bar width & height & smooth, stable & solid on the highway. It has been said it was a fairly heavy bike & it was but that made for less fatigue on long trips. I could ride for hours & get off to refuel feeling refreshed & with a stupid grin on my face. I said it was the best bike I ever owned. That might not be strictly true but it was by far my favourite. I rode that thing all over western Canada & the western USA. I put thousands of carefree & fun & trouble free kilometres on that bike. The shaft drive was so nice & smooth with almost no maintenance (save for checking the oil level & changing it from time to time. I never once had one problem or issue with that bike in 4 years. That is until an old man blew through a stop sign & hit me & totalled my beloved bike. It was literally irreplaceable in every sense of the word. The end. This is a true story. I actually owned one of these rare bikes. Thanks for reading. BTW: I'm about to turn 60 & recently sold my last sport tourer & XR650L dual sport. At the moment my two wheeled rides are a couple of Vespas. They're a kick in the pants though. Cheers.

Great video. A good friend of mine owned a CX500 non turbo. That was the finest riding motorcycle I have ever been on. The seat and suspension were like sitting on a couch. It ate pot holes like they were not even there. The motor had lots of low end pull. The bike was built solid as a tank. Just a very impressive motorcycle for the time. Not bad for a copy of a Moto Guzzi. The styling of the Yamaha Seca 650 was one of a kind gorgeous. You had to see them new in real life to appreciate how beautiful that bike really was. The Z1 Kaw was a blitzer all on it's own ( alot of them got the four into one chrome Kerker exhaust pipes , howling their presence through town all times of the day and night...so good ). The Kawasaki GPZ line of motorcycles rewrote the suspension book on motorcycles as soon as they came out. Another friend of mine bought a brand new GPZ550 with the same red, black ,white stripe color scheme and that bike was fast as hell , handled like a surgeons scalpel and had incredible...did I say incredible?..... brakes. We used to ride that GPZ550 two up down mountain roads with me, as a passenger , almost doing knee drags. That bike was so solid ,that with four hundred pounds of fat on it, at max cornering, that GPZ550 never flexed ,never complained and was never scary. I finally stopped riding with him because he was so good with that GPZ550 ,I thought he would kill both of us. Just an astonishingly well made motorcycle. Wow , that was a long time ago. Good times.

My mother has a pre 1980 CX500C and doesn't ride much anymore because she can't handle the bike that good when standing or even getting up on it so I ride it from time to time. Exactly what you're saying. The suspension and seat are very comfortable and the engine has enough torque that you don't need to downshift constantly. Only thing I don't like are the brakes and the feeling when cornering but that's to be expected from a bike more than 40 years old, I guess. Probably going to inherit that thing at some time. It now has 75000km on it and keeps on running.

The turbo lag definitely hits more in the 500 but is noticeable in both even in leisure riding. I'll be doing a video them soon sub to get notified. great video!

In 1984 I bought a brand new 1982 Leftover Yamaha Seca Turbo that had the dealer worked upgrade to the turbo charging. This bike ran from the Atlantic to the Pacific several times and had 90k plus miles on the clock. All the time it averaged 62 MPG. When purchased as a leftover Yamaha slashed the $4995 price to $2995, a $2k savings! So how fast was the bike? Well 130.mph was seen pegging the speedo needle against the pin on Jimmy Carter's 85 MPH clock. Yet, I knew that for every 1000 rpms it was 13 mph. So at 10000 rpms it was going 130 mph. When I raced my buddy on his 1985 v-65 Honda Sabre on a long interstate on ramp we were neck and neck right to the 10k rpm, which took us to the end of the on ramp. His bike was probably faster father down the road but at 130 we were satisfied to shut them down. I loved that bike, it only needed brake pads and tires over the long haul. The fairing and windshield sheltered me well from many a rain storm and road spray. It was a real beauty!

Yamaha- water cooled YZ125G - first water cooled motor cross bike . 4. Yamaha FZ 750 ( 1984 ) a 5 valve per cylinder engine- I have owned two of them ) 5. Yes and Kawasaki 750 Turbo - I rode one that a mate had back in the day . When that digital Turbo hit the red line it took off like a power band on a 2 stork on steroids 👍😂😂😂, I wheel standard it at 240kms while the turbo was spinning up , I was 17 years old . The Z1-R wasn't turbocharged, it was just an improved Z1 with a bikini fairing. Also although I'm no expert, I think you might have used the wrong picture for the Sega as well since I believe they were all sold with a fairing. Otherwise sick video

@@lsixty30 They weren't an "official" Kawasaki product The Z1R-TC was the brainchild of a former Kawasaki exec Alan Masek. Masek had big plans for his newly-formed Turbo Cycle Company, and noted that slow Z1R sales meant there were surplus bikes in the supply chain. At the same time, Kawasaki needed something to wow the market while waiting for the GPz1100 to arrive. It was the perfect opportunity for Kawasaki, Masek would take stock Z1Rs, fit an American Turbo Pak compressor and its ancillaries, then feed the converted bikes back into the Kawasaki dealer network. Any regulatory or liability issues could be diverted at TCC, while Kawasaki reaped the benefits of winning the horsepower war.

I had a CX500 Euro in 1983. I took it in to the dealer for a service, and he gave me a CX500 turbo as a loan bike. Offering me a very good deal on a trade in. It was pretty much the same as riding my standard CX500, until the turbo kicked in. The issue was the turbo lag. I was living in Berlin at the time, so most of my riding was in the city. Opening up the throttle, pulling away from the traffic lights, all seemed normal. Then the turbo would kick in, and you'd find yourself suddenly rushing towards the car in front. The turbo was pretty much on, or off. No graduation, and terrible lag. When I brought it back to the dealer, he asked what I thought. I told him that it was wonderful, but that I'd thought I'd probably kill myself before I learnt how to ride it.

My brother had an XN85 here in NZ that suffered from the same problem, turbo lag. Except with the XN, the turbo only made itself felt at around 120km (75 mph) below that it felt like a slightly woolly GS550. Cool bike but one for the collectors, which, funnily enough is where it is now, in a collection not getting ridden.

I remember when all those bikes came out. I've seen all of them in person and talked to the owners that quickly dumped them and bought bigger displacement bikes for less money. In theory, a great idea, in practice, the tech just wasn't there yet, and they were too expensive. The guy I knew with the Kawi Gpz 750 turbo got rid of his and bought the Gpz 1100 which he said was around the same speed but felt quicker because of all the torque. I could have bought a Seca Turbo 15 years ago for $1800 Canadian which in hindsight was a smokin deal but I was somewhat concerned that the complexity of the machine and its age would bight me in the ass and I'd be left with an $1800 lawn ornament. I wasn't worried about turbo lag because I've been riding a 750 2 stroke since the 80s, and way too much power all of a sudden is something I'm very familiar with.

The Yamaha supposedly has less turbo lag due to higher compression and lower boost compared to the CX. It was sold alongside the XJ900 at the time, which was cheaper to buy, drank a LOT less fuel, had no turbo lag at all and looked waaay prettier. Seriously, they beat the turbo with the ugly stick. All in all the XJ650 turbo is an awkward bike. The fact that it has a carbureted, air cooled turbo engine makes it very exotic, which in return doesn't really help with spare parts, especially considering the fact that its carbs were exclusive to this one bike that sold horribly bad. That's why I bought one. I'm a bit damaged that way. All I have to do is building it. And I tell my wife often that I will totally do it. Soon. Shut up.

What caused the turbo bikes to fail? I lived through this time period and can share some insight. For whatever reason, the Japanese market chose to introduce Turbos onto mid displacement bikes with goals of reaching liter bike performance. However, this promise was not found to be true as the bikes were typically slower than the liter bikes and cost as much or more than a liter bike. In time Kawasaki introduced the best liter bike from this time period with the GPZ750 Turbo. This was the only turbo bike which delivered in liter bike power, but it was still expensive. In time, these bikes faded away to more traditional bikes. I've often wondered what might have took place had Turbos been installed on the 80's liter bikes such as the Honda Interceptor 1000, Yamaha FJ 1100/1200 Suzuki GS1150 E / ES and Kawasaki Ninja 900 and Elliminator 900

Indeed...I owned a 900se turbo! The lag was ridiculous. At high altitude it went like a rocket and had so much torque steer ! There was a rally version at the dealer where I bought mine that was rated at 500 hp!

Funny thing is, It was never, ever marketed as the "GPZ" 750 Turbo, it was called the Z750Turbo or the ZX 750 E-1 in Kawasaki corporate speak. It only had Gpz on the points cover because the engine was a Turbo charged Gpz750 engine, and they never bothered to change the points cover.😆
