I was born in Cleckheaton, my dad was a member of Yorkshire CC and we went many weekends in the 60's to Headingley and Bradford, a complete priviledge to have seen Fred bowl so many times both for Yorkshire and for England. A great gent, great pipe-smoker, great after-dinner speaker and one of the greatest fast bowlers ever. Thank you for showing us this.

When I was a kid, Fred played in a benefit match for a Yorkshire player at my home club. I was sitting with my parents in the pavilion when Fred hit a huge 6 which came through the pavilion window and bounced off our table, scattering our drinks. 12 years later (after his retirement), he played for the MCC against my school but I didn't get to face him as he got taken off just before I went in to bat. I did get to face him briefly in the nets when he was warming up and I don't think I'd have lasted long in the match. He was still bloody quick.

I remember seeing Fred's 300th wicket live on television. It must have been on a Saturday or during the school holidays. Victim, Neil Hawke, first to shake his hand. Class gesture.

Hello James, He was I listened to a 1 hour interview with him. It was very modest Very down to earth. And funny to boot. He made a good presenter on TV so I was very pleased to do the film and I've got you enjoyed it.

@@sharonlongfellow6064 I think you're right Richard, but it could be that they called him fiery Fred first and then the advert came along. secondly to build on his name. I think it was his throwing style but maybe somebody else knows better. But very interesting about the ad.

I think Fred Trueman epitomised that old Yorkshire saying "Tha can always tell a Yorkshireman but tha can't tell 'im nowt ."

@@MotorHomeBeepBeep So am I ! but something to cheer you up. It is actually thought the expression should be read as "Strong in the arm and WICK in the head " i.e. Wick meaning sharp, witty not "Weak in the head"

@@Mackeson3 I'll have to look into it, I assumed that because we're ..up north there was a lot more labouring and a lot less money. Hence saying. But I like you possible wick rather than thick. We could start a fun where there's muck there's money.... But surely the rich never got dirty :-) The pen is mightier than the sword... It's all fun

When Trueman got his 300th test wicket the umpire was Jack Crapp who was not a big fan of Trueman. At the end of play Trueman asked for the ball.to keep. Crapp told Trueman to seek permission from whoever the authority was and chucked that ball in the box of balls of similar number of overs. When Trueman obtained permission, Crapp gave him a ball out of the box not knowing whether it was THE ball or not. Trueman always thought it was the very ball with which he obtained his 300 th wicket. Frank Keating told this story in the Guardian (?) the day after Trueman died.

Hello, Sharon I honestly really enjoyed researching Freddy. His interviews were super interesting and I like that guy. I wished I'd done some aerial footage on this video and some clips of Freddy but never mind. Glad you enjoyed it What a shame your husband could never see him. Even as a youngster Freddy was to be a brilliant fast bowler from the old school
