I was a VW fan boy for 17 years. I’ve had an ‘02 1.8 ‘03 VR6 and ‘11 GTI, ‘06 and ‘15 GLI. The GLI’s were my favorites. You guys picked the choice year, color and trim. Although people complain about the haptic buttons, the ‘25 will have a giant infotainment screen which is going backwards in design from the smooth linear look of the ‘24 display. I currently drive a ‘24 BMW 230i xdrive.

@@Motormouth... I love the haptic buttons. Especially being able to change the adaptive cruise control by 5 mile an hour increments by swiping up or down. I mile per hour change by pushing. Plus they look nice.

My first car was a 1978 VW Rabbit (which was a Golf everywhere else in the world). Always have a soft spot in my heart for these. Congrats on your GTI. You'll have many years of affordable fun with that car.

Same. Had a 78 Rabbit auto, then a 83 GTI for a couple years. Rabbit could go faster down the cut in North Van but the GTI was way more fun throwing around. Should have kept both.

It has been over 30 yrs since I drove a manual transmition. The trick I used was using the hand brake. I would put the car in first and as I release the clutch and the engine engage I would release the hand brake. Cheers to you both.

Lol you're all clowns. The cross hatching when they hone the cylinder makes a matched set when worn in with the piston ring. This has not gone away and never will. Break in is necessary.

However, I just went out and jumped in my 2012 TSX Wagon, which includes physical buttons, paddle shifters, great suspension and the K24z3...one of the best 4 cylinder motors Honda ever built...and I realized again how much I don't miss touch screens, sliders, crummy stereos, etc.

Thanks for another great review. It's nice to see a more personal review this time. I have a 2013 Golf R (APR tuned). I call it CHILL. I get the appeal of a manual transmission, but after a number of years driving my Golf R in stop-and-start traffic in Washington, DC ... and hitting my late 50s...I am ready for an automatic and something quieter. The exhaust note at 8:48 makes me wonder. Even with my concerns about interior noise, I am tempted by the MK8 GTI and R; particularly encouraged by your comments about refinement. Thanks again!

I had a 2007 GTI which I sold yo a friend a number of years ago/ When I sold it to him the car had 290,000 km on the dial. Currently to now has near 4000,000 km on it. Fantastic car. Keep up the great work Andes and Zack.

As usual, a frank and honest review, congrats on the GTI w/manual. I have been driving VWs since 1978. Despite what CR has published, I have had great reliability with various Golfs and Jettas. My current VW is a 2018 Tiguan with 217k km. Had one major issue, there is no maintenance interval for the Crankcase Ventilation Valve in either the owners manual or dealers service program. To avoid overpressurizing the crankcase and unseating the timing chain gasket, check or replace the Crankcase ventilation valve at 80k km. intervals. Love the reviews.

1936 Studebaker President was the first car to use a hill holder. Growing up in Seattle, it would have been great when stopping at the top of those hills going up from puget sound. In 1968, I had to learn fast in my 53 MGTD. A few backward slides taught me the precise rhythm of letting out the clutch and giving “Eliza Doolittle” the gas to get going up and over the hill. After test driving a 2015 GTI, I bought a 2016 molten orange Fiesta ST named “Chili” with a hill holder that works perfectly. I can turn it off if I wanted to. I enjoy your show. All the best!

Yep. Black wheels are the dumbest of the dumb. Black absorbs light, it doesn't reflect, so it basically hides the wheels. Why do I want my expensive wheels hidden? I don't, I want to be able to see them and enjoy them. Silver all the way.

Congratulations both! Great choice - especially the color. Zach is a man of his word, he said time and again during the live streams that he thought the GTI would be his pick when asked by the audience. Good for Andrea to learn to drive manual and to be enjoying it now. The reason the manual is going is, I believe, the emissions penalty manufacturers are being hit with now. The DSG performs slightly better in the area.

I bought my ‘23 GTI 40th anniversary edition last year. My 4th GTI in a row. For me it is the perfect spec GTI with the adaptive dampers, no sunroof and the less frustrating S infotainment (it has a few bugs here and there but overall works great). Also the Urano grey with the 40 AE graphics and black wheels is my favorite color I’ve had so far. Interesting you guys got the club sport graphics. I’ve not seen that on any GTI in North America.

For the uphill assist, back when I used to drive a manual tranny back home (Philippines) we have this thing called “half-clutch” its what Zack exactly describe about letting go of the clutch half-way slowly to make sure not to stall the engine, in this way most engines would tend to advance upward then mixing it right away with a push in the accelerator. Always works, back when there are no sophisticated uphill assist or anything like that.

As a 24 manual Golf R owner, I approve of this video 😁 Congrats on your purchase! I'm a bit jealous of your colour choice, since I only had 3 choices, I went with the classic Lapiz Blue. I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the car so far. I'm slowly getting used to the buttonless interface too and, yes, the hill-hold assist shenanigan is a major mishap on VW's part. Not sure why they had to make it so difficult. Enjoy the car!!

We still have our 2015 GTI which we love. Of the 26 cars we've owned this ranks in the top 3 best driving cars and it has been very reliable so far. I also like the fact it has real buttons, the Fender stereo system, hood struts, rear HVAC, etc. We call him Mr G as our Mazda was Miss M.

Ah, memories. Had four manuals, including a couple of Ford trucks and a Honda Accord. Last one was a 2000 Saab 9-3 hatchback. I do miss them, except they were not the most fun in traffic jams. Great review. Always liked this car but never bought one.

Drove a manual for many years, and loved it. I can't understand the complaints about use in heavy traffic. I found that shifting becomes 'automatic' when you are used to a manual. Shifting is almost intuitive, as you listen to and feel how your vehicle is performing.

I named my 2019 red Impreza Sport Tech The Brat. I love her. Changes I would make, change the interior colour to ivory, it seems smaller with a black interior, and I would add an interior hatch release. Minor changes for sure. I loved driving a stick back in the day.

Great video. I learned to drive standard in a right-had drive country in the Caribbean. When asked by my Manager (an American) why I only drove automatics? I replied, "you've never driven in Toronto have you? Particularly during rush hour (which is all day now)." Plus with some unforeseen injuries, there is no way I could've driven a standard but the automatics saved the day. :-)

I bought a 23 Anniversary edition, I also have a 15 Mazda Miata, I loved the GTI but after a while I couldn't get used to shifting, it just didn't work for me with the hill assist and all. The Miata on the other hand it just works, no effort shifting. Also had a lot of engine nocking sound using the dealer filled regular gas, it got better after I started to use premium.

I see we have the same taste in our “fun” car choices, my 380 was ordered in December and hopefully will be here for early summer. It replaces a Miata which was an absolute blast but not the favourite of my Border Collies who were right p’d off when I got it a couple years ago. Anyways, cheers you two and congrats! We bought a golf r in 2023 and just finally took it to the mountain of Southern California. Wow! The grip, the dual clutch, and the handling are amazing. The best part of the Golf R is the chassis and how responsive it is. Compared to my Recaro seats on my other vehicles, the seats could be a little more snug. As for the infotainment system, I have gotten used to it. Nonetheless, if you want to spend time playing around with infotainment system, this is not your car. However, if you want to drive it hard and have fun, this is your car.

Since you got your GTI in Feb , my wife and I went and ordered a manual GTI performance in late Feb . We asked for the Yellow but VW didn't offer it anymore so it's Kings metallic red. It will be produced late May and should arrive in August some time. Yes Mountain Dew is what i also called the color. Great review and thanks for your insight into this car looking forward to it.

Wow, great review, and different perspective since it's your own car. Thank you for including my "hill start" question. For hill starts, I have found that the brakes give an audible noise upon release after the 3 second hold. I just wait for the sound, and then gas/clutch as normal. No hesitation, no stall. In addition, when on an incline, pump the brake a little. If there is no give, the hill assist is active. Living with it, but still wish I could disable it. I name all my cars too. Even my friends call my cars by their names. I have gotten used to the hill assist. I just drive through it like normal, sometimes it doesn't release fast enough and gives me a little catch but I no longer get surprised by it. Enjoy your eye-catching GTI. A side benefit of having a yellow car is that it is really easy to find in a parking lot. I rarely remember where I parked. Best couple review on KZbin! :)

I have a 2023 ID4 and the touch buttons 100% grow on you. Once you live with the car, it becomes second nature and you may find that you'll even prefer them. Swiping to raise and lower the volume works well and other tricks like 2 fingers to turn on the seat heaters is great. It's a VW, it's going to have quirks, but that's what makes them fun and interesting. Congrats on your GTI, looks beautiful!

I've owned a few VW's over the years, from the Jetta to the Rabbit to a Tiguan now and I always own my car. I love the '23 Tiguan I have now. Unfortunately it's had a few glitches since I got it with connectivity and the service department at the Saskatoon VW has not been great. Somehow my car put on 108 km and lost 1/4 tank of gas while it was in for service that they can't explain. other than that, the car is great!

Beautiful car, and nice addition to the garage. Great colour and option choice for a very unique car in the market. It really continues to be one of the best overall cars on the market, ticking many boxes all in one package. As for naming, I called my 2015 mk7 6spd white GTI 'Minty' due to looking like a Tic Tac. Thoughts on making those Pretoria wheels your summer set (amazing wheel design)? Unfortunate on the sound system not performing on this mk8, as the Fender system on the MK7 was an absolute high point of the car.

It’s not. Non luxury cars for a good Dailey? The gti is a 40k version of the luxury 68k starting price s3. Js get the s3 for the rich ppl. I drive a 2022 BMW m5 comp matte black (profile pic) and a 2024 cayenne s hybrid pebble grey, I Dailey use the m5 comp, very quick, very fun to drive and great trunk space

I have a '15 GTI fuel gauge goes down quick but is a small tank. I notice the door handles on new GTI has a lot of wiggle to them when pulled on. They are fun cars to drive.

My 2 cars previous to my current Prius Prime were Golfs - 1 GTI and a Sportwagen. (I also had a '76 Scirocco.) Of all the cars I've owned, VW have been my most solid, reliable and fun vehicles. I'm a gear jammer from waaaay back but in the last 20 years, I can take 'em or leave 'em (I'd rather leave 'em). DCT have been sooo much better and just as much fun. On a final note: If my Prime were shaped like a Golf, it would be the perfect car for me - save gas, carry stuff, sporty.

I have had 3 GTIs and used both the manual and DSG with paddle shifters. The manual is simply much more fun to drive but both are great. It is quick, nimble and versatile. If you don't need a huge amount of space it is a great car for speed, handling and comfort. Sad to see the manual go away.

Best trim to buy in America = Base *S* Not even joking. One, you get all the performance goodies, minus the summer tires. All seasons instead. (Not a huge deal.) You get a couple of physical buttons on the center stack! And you save a good chunk of money over the other trims.

I shopped the GLI autobahn and the GTI Autonahn 380 and they were so close that I chose the GLI. More features, less money, lower interest rates(at the time) and more interior room with 95% of the performance of the GTI. If I did pick the GTI, it would be the Autobahn 380, manual in Pomello Yellow with the sunroof. Nice choice.😊

Love your shows! The GTI looks great in the Mountain Dew green! We have two Nissan Rogue Sports! One is Ole Gray and the other one is Ole Blue!!! The manual in the Honda's is still around but most buyers go automatic these days!!! Yes I work at a Honda store service dept in Jacksonville,NC!!! The Honda Accord is ugly and needs to be redesigned soon!!!!

Beautiful color, it looks very nice, not too much different from mk7, I have 2017 SE auto transmission (mk7,) it is fun to drive, this is complete vehicle for 4 people if needed. Great review. In 8 years only repair I needed is fuel door switch replacement. 56k miles we have mostly summer driven minimal driven in winter. The fender audio I have is superb worth while upgrade, I would’ve got autobahn but was not available back then, I think sport trim in USA better value.

Great review. Just got mine 2 weeks ago, 380 Autobahn manual trans. Love it so far. I can live with the buttonless info system. Bought the white one, no name yet. Any suggestions?

I used to drive manuals, but that was in the days when most automatics were mediocre at best. It's still fun rowing through the gears but the dsg is a better box, and way more practical for the roughly 80% of us that live in urban/suburban areas.

Good review. I have the Canadian version of the 40th Anniversary model (2023), also in Pomelo Yellow, but with the DSG. Love the car, the performance, and even the tech. The only real gripe I have about that is the lack of backlighting on the controls under the infotainment screen. Really thought they would have corrected that for the 2024 model year, so that’s disappointing. Enjoy your Mountain Dew! I live in St. John’s, NL and it sounds like you are coming my way next month. I had an MK7 Golf R, with a manual and loved it. I wanted the MK8 but you just couldn’t get any for two years. I got impatient and upgraded to an Audi RS3. Love the car but miss the manual for sure.

Man so envious. I drove a mk6 for 10 years and loved every moment. I had an order for a MK8 Golf R, but after waiting over a year, it got annoying. I currently have a Tesla MYLR, but every time I see a GTI I still miss a GTI. I never have anyone come up to me and talk about the Tesla, but I had so many people come up to talk about the GTI. I remember one couple hanging out just admiring the GTI and asked so many questions because they wanted to buy one. Anyway, Great choice and love the color.

Congrats on the GTI . Previous owner of the a MK7 Golf R for 7 years. I've driven the MK8 GTI and the R. I don't think I would get the R. Manual for the GTI is perfect. Cheers
