This is a Motormouth couple car video on the all-new 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid.
We are at the Chicago Auto Show and Subaru has unveiled the NEW Forester Hybrid! What do you think?
I know many of you have been waiting for a hybrid from Subaru and it’s finally here. It will hit dealerships this spring. We don’t have pricing and fuel economy numbers for Canada but we do for the US. It has an MSRP starting price of $34,995 USD. For fuel economy 35 MPG city and 34 MPG highway. There is only one trim in Canada and it will be the top trim. In the US, there are more options.
The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid is powered by a 2.5L 4-cylinder Boxer engine with two electric motors, it’s matched to a CVT and has a lithium ion battery. It gets a combined 194 horsepower, standard symmetrical full-time AWD. This system is mechanically coupled to the front and rear wheels. The e-Boxer hybrid powertrain is designed to integrate seamlessly into the existing Subaru architecture without any loss to AWD capability. This hybrid is a marriage between Subaru and Toyota creating a unique hybrid model.
The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid has 8.7” of ground clearance and the exterior is distinguished by e-Boxer badging in Canada and hybrid badging in the US on the fenders and power rear gate. The hybrid comes standard in Canada with an 11.6” touchscreen, available in the US, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a new 12.3” digital driver display and over the air updates. Although you lose very little cargo capacity or fuel tank size because of the battery, you do lose the temporary spare tire, this hybrid has a tire repair kit.

Yes I'm a retired senior but I think most of us including me can easily change a tire.With a big 16 +gallon gas tank I'm sure the engineers at Roo can make room for at least a donut. There are still lots of places in the states and Canada where you get no reception for a help phone call. If they update it for the next years model I will make the purchase and get the geolander tires that are on the wilderness. Just stubborn old school guy here. Seems short sighted for Canadian market with regards to hybrid trims and pricing. One of the things that makes the Rav4 so desirable is multiple trims for hybrid / right price for everyone. Thats one of the reasons we purchased a 2024 Rav 4 XLE vs the CRV Touring. Subaru is placing themselves in the same position. Truly unfortunate as their AWD system is fantastic.

I agree completely about only offering the top trim. I wonder if Toyota has some say about that, just like the Signia Limited is the only trim in Canada. About the eBoxer badging for Canada, is that because it will be manufactured in Japan, and the US hybrids will be manufactured in Indiana?
@jeffer1101
@jeffer1101 3 күн бұрын
Agreed, but it may have more to do with availability. Subaru Canada may be limited in the number they can bring in (for the first year) so they just went with the top trim. My guess is more trims will be added next year. We don't really need a base trim (since few buy that one anyway), but a mid trim to go with the top trim would be a good idea.
@Mark.Rett1
@Mark.Rett1 3 күн бұрын
@@jeffer1101 You think they would look at Toyota historical sales as Rav4 has held a top sales stat for years and introduced a trim comparable to Rav4 XLE trim as it would appeal to the largest market segment and gone from there. Oh well.... If i was king of the world lol

I have NO idea what goes through the minds of Subaru. So you pay a premium of $3k-$5k. You get less storage space, you lose the spare tire. You get 14 more hp but the car is significantly heavier with the battery and the hybrid system so will probably be slower. You get a nice dash display. You get an extra 8-10mpg. You would have to do a LOT of driving to make that pay off. And you can only get the top model in Canada. Seems like another miss from Subaru. I truly wonder if they have an entirely different team that works on the Wilderness models because ALL of those are knocking it out of the park. And all of their regular model releases have been absolutely lackluster.

I feel like Subarus are getting way too expensive for a small suv Plus for a hybrid, one has to do the math on price premium for hybrid vs how much spent on gas. If that premium is too much, it will take way too long to break even, let alone save money and then there's the exorbitant cost of battery replacement, if one ever has to do that For me, I'll never do a car without buttons or knobs for climate control. The decision to limit the Canadian to the top trim, is somewhat what Toyota and other manufacturers do. The Limited trim for the Sienna was basically persona non grata in Canada because of the 2-year waiting list, but plenty more of the lower trims. But in the US the Limited trim was more readily available. Subaru is prioritizing hybrid units for the USA over Canada.

So it's the same 194 hp hybrid engine that the croostrek is getting. I would be a little worried that it's a little underpowered. I mean it sounds like an improvement over the 180hp current engine but is the extra 14 hp combined going to help with this bigger vehicle compared to the crosstrek. I have a feeling now that the outback will get the same hybrid engine, too . They keep putting the same engine in a heavier vehicle , i worry about the performance..

I have a hunch that this not being the most powerful combined output is a good thing for long-term reliability considering the continued use of a normal CVT instead of an autobox. Do we know where each of the trims are built? I heard that the Crosstreks sold in Canada are built in Japan, except for the Wilderness trim which comes from the Indiana plant. If it's the same for the Forester, then the centre console difference on only that trim makes some sense. On the one hand I like that the heated seats are being integrated into the touchscreen because it means that they can possibly be connected to the remote start function and automatically turn on if the car senses that it's cold. On the other hand, it signals that Subaru is intending to commit to their 11.6" touchscreen for longer, which means the HVAC will remain as mostly digital controls, which most people don't like.

Why would you shift? The e-CVT is continuously smoothly shifting. There is no need to be manually shifting. It is always in the right gear. Only reason to manually shift is for engine braking on a long steep downhill.

@@rlderemer I live in a very hilly area (steep hills) and my 2.4L in my Santa Fe Sport is not very powerful. Shifting gives me much more power and I feel no lag whatsoever by doing that. Another reason is because a standard shift is all I ever drove for 35 years before I developed knee issues from jogging and my SFSport feels much more sporty and engaging to shift it rather than just driving. Important to note that I have been driving two different Hyundai's with the 2.4 theta engine the way I do for the past 19+ years and have never had any issues with either one and have never added a drop of oil between my 5k mile oil changes.

@hb-vy3fd Most Toyota's have a 'S' mode that enables a sequential 6 speed shifter. No need to use a clutch, just slap it in the next gear! That said I don't find it very satisfying. The electric motor makes the car more responsive. The engine can REV to the horsepower peak and stay there. It's better than shifting through gears. I think you should drive an e-CVT to appreciate the performance and smoothness.

From what I've seen elsewhere, this doesn't use their conventional CVT, it uses an eCVT (planetary gearset). Also, MG1 is the same as the one in the RAV4, but MG2 is not the same. MG2 is likely the same as the one used in the Highlander (and Sienna) Hybrid, which is a bit more powerful. That combination seems odd considering the "total system output" is less than the RAV-4, but perhaps it's just the way it is configured with the engine (the Subaru engine is less powerful than the Toyota engine).

Hopefully, with so many new cars not having spare tires, there will be more flatbed trucks replacing tow trucks. On a different topic, "This is a CVT." - it's an advantage of hybrids that they usually come with e-CVTs, rather than belt-driven standard CVTs. Being gear-driven, e-CVTs should be more reliable and long-term durable (as they've been for the Prius). I have read that this new Subaru hybrid system *does* use an e-CVT (Car & Driver), while Subaru simply continues to repeat their "Lineartronic CVT" jargon. So, which is it, I wonder?

Does anyone doubt Subaru of Canada made a last minute decision to source the Hybrid out of Europe (due to US trade tensions)? In Europe, I believe they only get the top trim and use the e-boxer branding. Given the suddenness of the situation, Subaru had to pivot quickly but try to not stir up controversy. Subaru of Canada will have to decide if they will be linked to NA regulations going forward. Let's see what happens to the next generation Outback for Canada.

@ calling it a CVT can be misleading and turn many buyers away, it uses Toyota technology with a Planetary gear set to get variable gears, no chain & pulleys used. There has been pictures online showing Two electric motors, one to drive the wheels and the second as a generator/starter and this one also sets/adjusts the planetary gears to give it variable drive. Toyota call it an ECVT but to be fair, I have not heard yet what Subaru are calling it but the lineartronic name has been used on chain driven transmissions in the past.
