We’ve had a new X1 M sport option since 2018. It supplements our X5 as parking is limited in the city. Honestly it feels like it has more cargo space than our X5 and we’ve put our bike racks and have used it for about everything: city driving, camping, Home Depot material runs, kids sports -hockey equipment… etc. Out of this world visibility.

It drives great as well. Long road trips it saves me so much more gas than my 6 cylinder 340i. Spacious and comfortable for long drives as well, I highly recommend the panoramic sunroof, lets a lot of natural light in and feels all round more spacious in the cabin with it open. Also super easy to park and maneuver U-Turns with. When we go anywhere busy I always had a hard time parking in my ram 1500, this suv parks like a car it's awesome.

I owned a 2015 X1 for 5 years and loved driving it. I could have kept this car for another 5 years (at least), except for one thing-high maintenance/repair costs when it gets older. Also, this vehicle has a very high depreciation rate. Unfortunately, I didn't find this out until it was time to sell it.

I really like BMWs and have since I was a kid, but one thing that’s really putting me off these “premium” brands is all the tech they are missing, such as Android Auto and other tech features which are standard in more affordable vehicles from non “premium” brands. Brands like Mercedes, BMW etc used to stand out because you paid more to get more, but now you pay more to get less. Granted, they are usually quieter and more dynamic to drive, but a lot of mainstream brands are catching up. We aren’t all blasting around race tracks or through twisting mountain roads, many of us are commuting etc, so it seems that the average person would rather have the tech and comfort features than just the badging on the hood. It’s time that these “premium” brands offered premium features to justify the pricing.

Great review. My wife just bought a 2021 X1. Excellent car but not perfect. Definitely should come with blind spot monitoring, 19 inch wheel causes more noise in the cabin and you feel more bumps in the road. Also poor visibility looking through the mirror due to the middle head rest.

@joshs3905
@joshs3905 2 жыл бұрын
i have to disagree with the 19" wheels. The size of the wheels do not affect road noise whatsoever, it's the type of tire that's on the rim. Run-Flat tires have a tendency to be noisy at high speeds, you will notice that once the tread on your runflats go and it's time to buy new tires, if you get standard tires instead of runflat it eliminates the road noise almost completely. For example, my pick up truck had 22 inch wheels, when I used runflat tires the ride was noisy, as soon as I switched to standard 22 inch tires the noise went away. You get pros and cons with runflat, pro being that it lasts 5x longer than standard tires in terms of durability, they also can be driven on after a hole is punctured for quite some time before needing to change the tire, but the con is the road noise. As for bumpy-ness and stiff suspension, that's all on the car, not the tires. BMW is known for having a fairly stiffer ride over Mercedes and even volvo (hate that brand), but it makes up for it's steering and driving dynamics. The decision of what car to buy really comes down to the taste of the driver, if you want a more immersive and dynamic driving experience, the X1 will pull sharp turns better than any other suv in it's class (close call with audi) , but if you want pure luxury and comfort, you should have gotten your wife a benz or volvo, they are much more smooth to drive but at the cost of sharp turns feeling disproportioned and acceleration being a little weaker. It's all on the taste. I personally enjoy the ride of the X1, and my wife has a mercedes benz glc 300. If I want a lazy comfortable drive and am in any way tired, I go with the benz, if I have any sort of energy in me, I pick the X1 over the GLC every time. The BMW looks sportier and is a more fun ride vs the mercedes and volvo. I usually get home from work about 5 minutes quicker in the X1 vs the Benz and that's just because of the BMW's driving dynamics, it's such an easy car to swim through traffic, pulling fast turns, and it accelerates very decent for a 4 cylinder. The MB I have to drive it like im driving a massive escalade, yes it's super comfortable, but it's not fun driving that car in a rush somewhere. Me going BMW and the wife going Benz was the perfect compromise for our situation

I have a 2018 BMW X1 X Drive 28I. And the stated 0-60 of 6.5 seconds or so is just stepping on the gas with a second of turbo lag off the line. When I brake boost my X1 off the line with the turbo spooled with x drive awd it is easy high 5s range-0 60 feels like a rocket for only 230HP and 260ft. compared to many v6s with 300+hp that are not even close to as fast off the line as mine is. I have yet to have anyone take me off the line unless they run low 5s range. I have the smaller 18 inch wheels so maybe that helps a bit compared to the 19s. And no other car at this price point feels so good to drive with the ambient lighting at night. And for blind spot monitor, This car is so small and awesome visability there is no need for them if you no how to drive at all.

Great review on emphasizing the real world feel, prices and not track time, top speed. I’m really surprised JD power gave the X1 such a high reliability rating. I’ve personally had 2 BMWs (330ci, 335xi) and known others whom have had M cars. They have all had reliability problems after 3 years, even before the warranty’s out. From cracked intake manifolds, failed engine sensors buried deep inside the engine necessitating 12-15 hours of labor to rubber & plastic bits failing after 2 years. Most famously was my friends 2006 330i, which at 120k mile, the lifetime ATF gave out and his transmission had a SpaceX moment (rapid unscheduled disassembly) on the highway.

JD power giving the X1 a high reliability score is nothing of a surprise man. 330ci and 335xi have had a long history of known issues that happen after the 100,000 mile mark so it's nothing of a surprise. The same way exotic cars stated the 335xi is one of the most unreliable engines on the market. But that being said, I have to disagree with a few of your points. BMW doesn't have a bad reputation for reliability on all of their models, some brands have less lemon models than other brands, but you just need to do a bit of research. Your 2 cars and your buddies 2006 330i, I hate to say but in today's age, they're moving time-bombs. So you can't expect anything less. I have a 2017 340i with almost 80,000 miles on it and the B-58 engine runs better than any car I've owned in the past. No issues, no high maintenance costs, just the standard fluid changes and brake pads. It really comes down to #1 the research you do on the engine and it's past recalls or problems, and most importantly, the complexity of the engine. If you take good care of your car the chances of major repairs happening drop significantly, it's usually a rare case that a well maintained car turns into a lemon. BMW X1 is also the least complex suv in it's lineup, and arguably the least complex bmw car in the entire lineup. It's very likely that the X1 will have a much less chance of major repairs vs even the electric bmw models. So with what I was saying, no it is no surprise that JD Power gave the X1 a high reliability score, and why carwow rated it a 9/10 being one of the best small suv's for it's price and class. If you see many older X1 models on autotrader with high mileage, then you should already get a hint that these cars are built to last.

The deal killer for an "entry level" Audi for me is that friggin seat back adjuster. I have a Q2 and I can never lie down in the front seats because I don't know who in heck thot it was a good idea to design a wheel that you'd have to turn several times just to move that seat back a little bit. To get it all the way down? Probably turn it 200 times. And then back up again? They can take the car back. Look out for that.

Luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes try to reach a wider audience by introducing less premium products like the X1, X2 or the GLA, GLB with lower price tag. The compromise is that they use a different technology than what's used on the rest of their cars. BMW for example, rear wheel drive (including xdrives) with longitudinal engines, ZF 8 speed transmission etc are replaced with something else for the 1/2 series and X1/X2s. Sure the badge means a lot, but I'd also look what's really under the hood.

In 2020 I wanted to upgrade my last-gen Q3. Ideally I wanted to change to BMW, but as this model is so antiquated (even with facelift), I went with the current-gen Q3 as it’s far more modern than the X1.

No Hud and no touch screen. I prefer my LED headlights and tail lights and my lights on the door and door handles which are nice and bright. LED lights in the interior are nicer too including the ambient lighting. No panoramic sunroof on the Audi either. I find the Audi designs nice though but different and not better. The big issue for me is thats It's a re-badged VW Tiguan and that's not good. Taste is highly subjective so to each their own I guess.

I just bought the 2021 45 Komfort model for my wife after also driving the 2021 BMW Xi 28i Xdrive The BMW is a bit quicker off the line but a second later, the Audi is just as quick. Both also allow for selecting gears fior keeping the revs up higher than Dynamic or Sport mode would. But using the shifter ... neither of the ones I drove had a paddle shifter. Interior: Audi, gorgeous. BMW: reminds me of a 1996 Chev: ugly and old fashioned controls. More expensive BMWs are much better in this respect. Exterior: BMW adds a lot of chrome. Hated that. My BMW M235i has almost none and that is perfect. Steering: Too light in the Audi, less so in Dynamic mode; BMW is better. Interior: Audi, gorgeous. BMW: reminds me of a 1996 Chev: ugly and old fashioned controls. More expensive BMWs are much better in this respect. Exterior: BMW adds a lot of chrome. Hated that. @@ThaWolfe1 I had a brand new fully loaded 2015 Subaru Impreza Sport Hatch and it had a lot of issues including one that took the dealership 1 year to sort out! There was a problem with the ignition. Sometimes we wouldn't be able to remove the key! Or after inserting the key we couldn't put in reverse backing out of a steep driveway. It turns out that they finally found the issue after I finally put my foot down and did a search on the internet. There was a TSB in the US for a problem with a sensor wire that was improperly installed or had a bad connection. One morning I noticed the problem after I dropped off my wife at the train and then headed home. Upon arriving home I was unable to get my key. Usually you had to start and stop the engine a few times until it finally let you remove the key. So as soon as it happened I drove it down to the dealership and called the dealership. Upon arrival at there, the tech was waiting for me and when I got out he climbed in he too was unable to remove the key after shutting the engine. The problem was every time I tried to inform the dealership about this they replied, "We have to see the problem" and didn't even suggest leaving it there for the techs to drive for a few days to replicate the issue. I also had a leaking headlight that had to be replaced twice. No it wasn't leaking blinker fluid, LOL, it was condensation inside the light assembly. Also after 6 months the Infotainment system had to be changed. This is unacceptable in a new vehicle.

The only good reason to get an X3 over an X1 is if you're planning to get the 6 cylinder engine that comes with it. In terms of the exterior, the X3 does in fact look a little bit bigger, but on the inside, the X1 managed to get almost the same amount of boot capacity, and ironically has more rear seat room vs the X3. The X3 has a few premium extra options you can add in that the X1 doesn't offer as well. But if you're planning to go with a 4 cylinder and don't care too much about sensatec seats vs the leatherette or the surround sound harman kardon vs the standard one, then the X1 is a no brainer. Will instantly save 10 grand in your pocket, and still just as practical as the X3.

@@damianxavier7343 yes and no. Depends on the model you get. The X1 is one of the least complex engines in bmw's entire lineup, thus decreasing the chances of any major repairs in the future. Also, between BMW Audi and MB, benz and bmw are almost neck in neck in terms of reliability. I've owned an Audi A4, and a Q5, they both leaked oil worse than my 1996 snow blower lol. With what Allan said, I highly agree, I know many many people with 2012/2013 models that are still on the road with 180,000km and still going strong to it's last breath. My buddy's Ford F-150 Lariat on the other hand, the car you'd think will outlast the longest, ended up needing a full transmission replacement at just under 100,000km. Now a situation like this is rare, but I'm using it as an example to say that all cars will have the few lemons in them.
