I walked into a dealership where a new owner was screaming at the sales staff & service department. She had her hybrid for 2 weeks. They refused to take a look at her car or book an appointment the following week. She wanted to know if the dealer sold her a lemon. They insisted she only come in when they want her to (sticker on the window), even if she has car problems. She was calm at first. The dealer said, "Although we are not busy today, you'd be wasting our time." This all happened in front of the assistant manager. I immediatrly walked out & bought from another dealership. They also would not tell me the price of the car & refused to look at my trade-in unless I guarantee I buy from them. There were no other customers. Work customer service ever.

I'll never forget a Subaru salesman, after the test drive, then back in his cubicle, insisting I pay him $50 before he'll give me a price, in order to guarantee that I'm "serious about buying." I immediately left. Or a Mitsubishi salesman who repeatedly (for 30 minutes) refused to give me my prospective trade-in's keys back, while attempting to persuade me to pay a bloated new car price. And many more dreadful car sales experiences...

I've heard that some dealerships when asked about pricing tell customers to find the pricing themselves online. So the customer is to print it at home. Then the sales guy walks away. Of course, after glaring at the customer from head to toe & checking out what they drove in. FYI: Some people do downgrade from luxury brands or upgrade to luxury brands.

We need Lemon-Law in Canada! Our system is ridiculous and always sides with the OE's. Having had a Lemon car that I tried to fix through the dealer for months and months and ended up taking a $10,000 loss on when I traded it for something else just to get rid of the problem. It was a Toyota Highlander with paint defects and a transmission issue. Even the regional manager from Toyota was difficult to deal with. I was nice and patient but they wouldn't fix it. I'm not sour on Toyota but I feel that had we had Lemon-Law it would have been a total different experience.
@Doc18558 ай бұрын
Under the Lemon-Law, it takes a minimum of TWO years and you cannot drive the vehicle and you Must have it enclosed in a carport or garage while you’re waiting. You Must keep current on your license registration, payments and insurance. The vehicle Must have been into the dealership for the same reason a minimum of THREE times for the Same problem during the First Year of ownership. I know because I had to take a Nissan pickup through the Lemon-law in 1986. It was a horrible experience. If Nissan would have taken care of it within 6 months after I filed under the Lemon-law, I would’ve bought another Nissan, but because of all that I went to, I will Never Ever own another Nissan product, Ever

@@Doc1855 My experiences with various mass-market car manufacturers and dealers have been the same when it has come to fixing a problem they don't want to deal with - under warranty, that is. Dealers I've dealt with apparently want cash customers filling their service bays, while manufacturers consider the *dealer* their customer ("We'll call the dealer, but he's an independent businessman, so we can't tell him what to do." was literally the answer from a customer service rep at a carmaker).
@Doc18558 ай бұрын
@@kenhoward3512 Yes they are independent businesses owners. The dealership doesn’t make much money from warranty work. They don’t get paid for the normal markup on the repairs but they do get paid for the time it takes for the repair.
@j.frankparnell30878 ай бұрын
@@kenhoward3512 Manufacturers don't get a free pass on this practice. They provide dealers with monthly budgets for warranty repairs and will often demand video and photo evidence before approving a warranty repair. This is why sometimes near the end of the month the service manager may get really sticky about doing warranty work - especially for people that didn't buy the car there.

Interesting to hear the Venza is on its way out, but not surprising based on its limited numbers. I bought one 2.5 years ago and love it, but mostly got it because it was in stock on the lot, otherwise I likely would have got a RAV-4 Hybrid instead (which had a very long wait time). Earlier this summer, my neighbour went to look for a Venza as they wanted to replace their RAV-4 and they really like my car but didn't want to wait the 18-24 months it would take to get. They ended up getting the new NX instead as its wait time was only about 3 months. Regarding the concern about discontinued models, I think it is more about the vehicle itself. If it is a vehicle that has little demand because it isn't very good, that would be reflected in its resale value and may be tough to sell (or you'll get less on trade). Parts availability shouldn't be an issue as long as its a major brand (Toyota, Honda, VW, Ford, etc). Considering the demand for Toyota Hybrids is strong (because they are so good), it's unlikely going to affect the resale value in any negative way. To give you an example, I just looked at how much a low mileage 2021 Venza Limited is listed for in my area and I found a nice example at the Toyota dealership near me in Waterloo for $48,999. That is $1054 more than what I paid for my car 2.5 years ago (well, excluding freight and fees). That's the advantage of buying a vehicle with strong resale value. You don't lose your shirt when you move on to something else in the future.

What to do with a lemon car? Well, way back in 1973 I owned the first year of the Pontiac Astre, my very first new car, and the Pontiac version of the now notorious Chevrolet Vega. In only a few months that Astre was burning oil like nobody's business (apparently, according to GM, burning a liter of oil in a few hundred kilometres is "acceptable") and less than a year later I traded-in that car on what turned out to be a very reliable Plymouth Duster with the 225 slant 6 which I owned for a decade. Of course that Astre became someone else's problem, hopefully they got some support from the dealer, and who knows maybe from GM, but I didn't want to fight that battle. Maybe things have changed since then but I doubt it.

I would agree with Zack with regard to leasing "new Tech cars and I would add Electric Cars be the full EVS or Plugins to the "New Tech" definition. Until Manufacturers get a handle on the issue with regard to Battery replacement cost I will only Lease such vehicles and I will ask the Leasing company what is their policy with regard to this issue as they may put the liability for this issue on those who lease in the "fine Print" that none of us read when signing on the dotted line.. In which case I would not consider taking on any type of electric car. I would feel like I was sitting on an economic time bomb every time I got in it to drive down the road trying to avoid bits of road debris.

We had the same dilemma when we’re looking for a new vehicle - SQ5 or X3 M40i. Bought a 2018 X3. The Audi interior is nicer but the X3 is just a little better in almost every other respect. It has lower fuel consumption, has more cargo room and for some reason is actually faster even though the power and weight are about the same. And Zac is right - the engine in the M40 is a dream. Absolutely no issues with it all in 5 years. Although one thing to watch - the alignment on the M40 is super aggressive and BMW’s tire pressure recommendations are way too high, especially on the rear. I have summers and winters that are worn out after only ~25k km on them. I went to a shop in Calgary that can correct the alignment issue so your tires don’t wear out so fast. Those 255’s on the back are mighty expensive.
