[MOTOROLA RAZR 2022 REVIEW]
Motorola. Until Apple came along, no one mattered more in mobile than the company that built the first cellphone - and there was no phone more recognizable than the RAZR. That brand name redefined the first flip phones in 2004; it helped Android conquer the smartphone world in 2011; and it resurrected the flip phone in 2019 with the world’s first mass-market foldable (that also brought back the venerable brand name).
But no amount of retro-futurism would hold off Samsung once the South Korean juggernaut decided it wanted a piece of the action. After a slow start with the Galaxy Z Flip, it went for the kill with the solid Z Flip 3 and excellent Galaxy Z Flip 4, each of which beat the Razr on the spec sheet and on the price list.
For its part, Motorola kept the world waiting nearly two years for a response. And now that the phone is finally here, Motorola’s attitude seems to be: if you can’t resonate … emulate. I’m Michael Fisher and I’ve spent two months with the Motorola Razr 2022, a wide and weird effort to duplicate Samsung’s success - by copying the copycat.

I have owned the RAZR 5G since last year and anxiously waited for the newest RAZR. I can't tell you how disappointed I was to see the "new design." The original RAZR design with the chin was so iconic, unmatched by any other phone. I feel like Motorola shot themselves in the foot with this one. As always I appreciate your review.

I liked it too, but the designs of the RAZR 5G and the previous RAZR were criticized by almost every reviewer except Mr. Mobile. I'm sure Motorola was intentionally hoping to trade "quirky" for "sales" with this redesign, and I can't say I blame them. (Even though it's not my preference.)

@@dnegel9546 That's cuz you only see functionality & little else, while to a good number of us, Mr. Mobile himself especially, the concept of foldable touchscreen phones itself represents something more, & definitely something that the previous Razr added to. The only review I’ve been waiting on. I’ve ordered mine here in the UK and with a 10% discount got it for £855 so a fantastic price. I know it has some down points like no wireless charging, not so great wide camera and no waterproofing but I think it has some great clawbacks with an outer display that you can actually use for most (unlike the flip series), a far less noticeable crease and a very good main camera. I also like the idea of the wider screen as I have quite large hands so feel this will be comfortable to use. Time will tell but really looking forward to using it and seeing how it goes.

I absolutely do not like the new razr at all aestheticcally compared to the 2019 and 2020 5g models. This switch to fit it more and look like a Samsung is exactly why I will never buy the new razr cause honestly if I wanted a Samsung I would just buy a Samsung cause of the better cameras, operating systems and availability. Motorola completely dropped the ball here with this new model and hopefully the sales aren't bad enough that they discontinue the model because I would love to see them go back to the older models with better operating systems, cameras and sleek original design

Because alas, people hate charging their phones, and the first two Razrs just do not last as long as the Z Flip, it's physically impossible without fattening it, which if they did but kept the chin, I think would be a worthy sacrifice for the masses. Honestly the 2022 "Razr" shouldn't have the name, it's obviously more akin to a Moto Edge than the icons of the ages.

Two things I really liked about the RAZR 5g that Samsung did not have.. 1) the bottom "chin" 2) the ability to do most things from the cover screen. My RAZR 5g died this year... I've moved over to the Samsung flip 4 because it's Easter proof. If the RAZR had the chin, I'd have gotten that .. But now the RAZR looks like the flip 4, I went for the flip. So the cover screen, natively, the flip 4 is very limited but with third party apps I can now use it for most things except writing text. The RAZR 2022 is no longer line the old RAZR , now it is just a Samsung with less pros than the Samsung

I think the" wideness" is welcome. Keeps the phone's aspect ratio in check (20:9). A less wide phone probably would've yielded (in my opinion) a needlessly tall aspect ratio. While I don't mind larger phones; taller phones have been the bane of my existence ever since manufactures decided to artificially claim bigger screen sizes within the same relative foot print

I upgraded from the v60 to the moto razr2022. I do see your points about what this phone isn't compared to previous models. I knew I wanted a foldable phone as an upgrade and the outer display was a huge selling point compared to Samsung's flip4. I use the outer display for quick calculator access for my job and messages when I need to quick message someone if I don't want to ruin movie experience for others. My biggest worry was it's an overseas phone. And I was told at&t and Verizon wouldn't be compatible. But I just popped in the sim card and thank God it worked. Your absolutely right about the software. It is buggy, and just like you said in video, the personalization app won't open for me either 😭. Personally, I use a different home launcher than the stock it comes with so it helps with my own personal customization.

@Bas Hartman sadly enough, I had to trade it in about a week ago. 😫 everything about that phone was perfect. The display, the power behind the phone, the 120hrz display everything. What killed it, unfortunately, was a simple bug. Group text messaging. Forwhatever reason, I noticed that I was missing out on conversations or I wasn't receiving the full messages in group messages. I thought It was just the app I was using but I used every messaging app known on the app store and each had a group messaging problem. I called Verizon and they knew it was an overseas phone and couldn't really do much except keep telling me to try another app. But in the end it just got frustrating. Who knew just a basic task as group messaging would kill the experience for me. Traded it in for Fold4 (cuz I wasn't gonna go back to a Candy bar Phone). About 2 weeks ago. Haven't looked back sense

Just from an engineering standpoint to get better battery life, internal cooling and performance it has to be a bit fatter. I think i certainly prefer that form factor to the flip. Not getting a full tablet like the fold but mitigating the main downside of chunky phablets by keeping it small in the pocket. Heavily considering one because moto lets you load whatever OS you want for long term use.

I own the Razr 5G and while I hate Android with a passion, I just can't get enough of the beautiful design. I couldn't be more disappointed with this new Razr. The design of the Razr 2019 and Razr 5G is what convinced me to switch from iPhone. The new Razr looks like a normal candybar phone folded in half, just like the all the others, the quirkiness is totally gone.

I wish people would stop bashing on wide phones... Yes, a wider phone will make one-handed usage more difficult some of the time but a slimmer phone will make double-handed usage difficult all of the time, especially when typing as you have to intermesh your fingers behind the phone and painfully curve your thumbs to use the ever-smaller keyboard even when set at max-height.

For comparison, Samsung 256gb flip4 is £1000. I've been using the China release RAZR for over 2 months. Overall a better phone than the flip4. Aesthetically it could do with a little refinement and the minor software bugs need ironing out. Main camera has potentioal. with a few updates it'll be running as smoothly as a flip. The one major feature that the RAZR needs, is to allow regular widgets on the outer display. That'd be a game changer. For example you could have sports scores or a fitness tracker displayed.

Having used this as my daily driver for a month now, I will say that it is maybe my favorite phone I have ever owned. Yes, I don't like the design as much as my Razr 5G, and yes, the fact that I was impatient and ordered the Chinese version does create some problems (Android Auto will not work for example), I still like this way more than the ZFlip3. I have the 5G, which I loved, but unfortunately it's not a particularly good phone (no service in my office on Verizon when all my other phones had no troubles) and switched to the Samsung. I never could enjoy the Z3 - the gutter is distracting, I hate the aspect ratio of it, and I don't really love the Samsung interface. The Razr 2022 has pretty much solved all of those issues. A total winner in my book. By the way, a decent looking cover makes the giant outside "picture frame" look go away.

The chin design was way better in the RAZR 2020, the silver RAZR 2020 paired with the curved edges made it my favorite looking modern flip phone apart from the flip 3. They should've kept the curves and chin.

In terms of the form factor, I think there's probably only so much Motorola can do with the technology involved. That's the only reason I can think of they would make it so much like the Flip.

I don't blame them for confirming to the market. Look at what happened to Nokia and Blackberry when they decided to do their own thing. Companies need money to survive, and they need to do something that people would buy to earn that cash

I'll stick with my razr 5G. I bought it for the flip factor and the nostalgic look and feel. If I wanted a Samsung flippable block I would have bought one. I'm really like the external screen. I can do so much without even opening. And speaking of opening you can configure it to continue the app you were looking at on the external screen after you open it. It also works in reverse.

Even without reading the comments, i'm sure many here would share my sentiment, & agree with your subjective views on the phone. While i do laud the improved functionalities of the new iteration (i really REALLY don't wanna call it a Razr), i sure as hell lament its loss of individuality. As great as this new Moto foldable is in terms of function, it sure as hell has no business carrying the Razr branding.

I will give Motorola credit, at least they're trying to make the new Razr work, could've at least tried to keep more of the original asthetic while updating, but hopefully with their next model they'll have ironed out the issues with this one.

It's so different to the RAZR, I do think you're completely right: It really shouldn't be called a Razr. I'm not a fan of the form-factor of this "wallet phone" at all. I'd much rather buy one of the older RAZR smartypantsphones, but they're not likely to see support for much longer than a few years. From your review, the MegaMoto (as I'll now take to calling it) seems like a solid Galaxy-alternative indeed, but nothing more than that. Oh well, third time's the charm. I'll wait for the next generation at minimum.

I had the V3i. Within half an hour of purchasing it, from new, it was glitching out. When I pressed 9 it would register as 2 or 4. Press a direction button and it would go to the menu. I went back in the shop and they said they don't accept refunds, so I dropped it on the floor and stamped on it and walked out. £70 down the drain, but a phone that doesn't function is useless.

I'm assuming it came down to revenue. The first folding screen RAZR likely didn't sell well and banked on nostalgia from a demographic that largely isn't as concerned about having a unique device as they once were. Emulation was Moto/Lenovo's hope to grab some actual market share. Oh and Michael, FYI Nova launcher recently sold out to a data analytics company...

While I agree with everything here, I'm still very glad this exists for two very important reasons: 1. The outside screen makes it infinitely more useful than the Samsung Flip 2. Competition in the west, to a very stagnant and comfortable Samsung P.S. Launchers only change the launcher, not the system. Changing the system requires a custom ROM, which is somewhat cumbersome and risky (and definitely voids your warranty) but historically speaking Motorola phones have seen very active development from launch until up to a decade after the phone's release date. This (or the next model) will be a compelling upgrade from my Pixel 5 now that the Pixel family has gone in a direction I'm not too excited about (under the screen fingerprint sensor).

I'm hugely satisfied with my Motorola Edge+ (or 30, here in Europe) and love much about it, like Ready For - and I karate chop it multiple times a day to turn on the flashlight, such a genius little feature. The feature list of this flipper looks really solid to me, even including Ready For which can be a big deal for nerds. Pick up a pair of Rokid Air or Nreal AR glasses, plug in the USB-C and enjoy big screens wherever, so I'm glad they included that. They should put it on all their stuff, for some of us it's a selling point. That said, yes, if they're going to call it a Razr, it has to be true to the heritage of the name. A shame they couldn't get the design more Razr-like... and I agree, they shouldn't be using the designation. Sometimes I do almost forget that Motorola is super Chinese nowadays, not American at all.
