It’s a tired trope of the tech world to say that “the sequel is what version one should have been.” But in the case of one of the most famous brands in mobile phone history, you can’t help but wonder what might have happened if last year’s Motorola Razr … had been the Motorola Razr 2020 instead.
In last week’s Motorola Razr 2020 Hands-On I took you through the differences between the Razr 5G and its 2019 predecessor, so you already know that the spec sheet upgrades and hardware tweaks Motorola made to modernize this model … well, they worked. The Razr 2020 / Razr 5G feels less like a first-generation folding phone, more like a fully-realized fashion flip phone - and that added polish now puts it within striking distance of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip.
Those improvements are more than enough to make me commit to the Motorola Razr 5G as one of my two everyday-carry devices for 2020 - but $1399.99 is a lot to spend for anyone who doesn't have a device-review budget. CORRECTION: In this video, I stated this is the only foldable with any kind of water resistance. That's not true. Samsung's Z Fold 2 also features an "Anti-Erosion Waterproof Coating" on its internal components, similar to the coating on the Razr 5G's internals. MrMobile regrets the error.

@el capitano well yeah, they are practically selling different devices under the same name. In my country Note20 Ultra comes with both Exynos and 8 Gb of ram, there is no other version available. Even if I could understand processor difference, some 4G/LTE models having 8 Gb (compared to last years 12 on Note10+ and 12 on other Ultra devices) is only their greed and cutting corners wherever they can, nothing else.

I don't know if you'll actually read this, but this video sent be down the path of upgrading to the Razr. I started with the "when phones were fun" videos. The screen folding mechanism that Motorola used hides the creases exceptionally well compared to the Z Flip but the drawback is that it cannot stay open in multiple different positions. Still, a great design to get rid of that crease!

... It doesn't get rid of the crease at all. It just makes them slightly shallower, but instead of one crease you get THREE. They also get SIGNIFICANTLY worse with age whereas Samsung's (& now Motorola's as well) UTG foldables' creases stay much the same throughout ownership. The RAZR/5G's display not actually being laminated to anything was a major problem.

@@Cooe. I didn't say it got rid of the crease. It's just a lot less pronounced. Yes, you get 3 creases but they are shallow and you don't see them at all compared to what Samsung is doing. They are a bit more visible after 2-3 years of use, but even then they are no wear the level of Samsung. I switched from a Z Fold 4 to a OnePlus Open and it is so much better to not see the crease there.
