ridiculous, especially for a Lincoln. They actually made a car more powerful than the mustang.

My '93 is just about to turn over 140k miles. All I've had to replace is usual wear and tear items. Starter, water pump, brakes, rear air suspension bags, plugs and wires. I think any Mark VIII still on the road nowadays is one of the 'good' ones. I've never had any electrical problems or gremlins. Comfortable car, and FAST! It jumps off the line and can bark the tires in 2nd gear in the right conditions. I dig it. Plus you rarely ever see any others on the road. I only paid $1400 for mine. No rust either. 👍🏻🙂

There is an elderly couple on my block that owns one of these Lincoln Mark 8 in red. It looks like it just rolled out of the showroom and even though the old guy is like a hundred and twenty eight years old he's always out in the driveway spot waxing it. His wife drives and old Buick Regal from the early 90s and it equally looks showroom New. Other than them my 2000 Camry is the only other old car in the neighborhood. This old guy of 38 is always in the garage spot waxing my car as well LOL

Joseph Elias I know it's an old post, but...Really? WAY more? By 1998, the 280-290 hp Lincoln still compared well to pretty much most European V8 luxury coupés. BMW 850? 282 hp... Merc CL500 315 hp... Jag XK8 294 hp. Hell, even the Aston Martin Virage had what? 330 hp? The point stands, in 1993, (and 1998) 280 hp from an American V8 was an impressive number.

Sebastien LaPointe true, but the 93-96 were faster than the 97 & 98's. They were 0-60 in the mid 7's and the quarter was in hr mid 15's. This was mainly due to that stupid torque management system on the electronic trans, it gave it smoother, but mushy and slower shifts.

I’m watching this video and feeling old! Yes yes yes, the car looks familiar and they were commonplace on America’s roads for quite a long time, but it is hard for me to believe or accept that this Lincoln is 25 YEARS OLD! (Currently 2018). A quarter century before this car and we were talking about Plymouth Barracudas and McQueen’s Mustang. Great cars but they looked outdated before the end of the 1970s! This Lincoln still looks kind of fresh, if not a bit low-slung and awkward, but the only truly outdated part of the car in this test are the Speak & Spell graphics on the trip computer and that wonderful relic of a car phone!

There's No God I think the MarkVII is better proportioned but it doesn’t look as “modern” - inside or out - as the Mark VIII does.
@RoadCone411
@RoadCone411 6 жыл бұрын
There's No God Fair enough. To me, the Mark VII looks like a frumpy Thunderbird with a fake spare tire hump, which basically summed it up. The Mark VIII looked much more sleek and modern, and it has aged fairly well to my eyes. I am not partial to American cars but I did grow up in the 1980s, so all cars from the late 70s through present are interesting to me. This Lincoln was clearly aimed at American tastes but at least it looked like it was ahead of its time. That’s why I feel that a quarter of a century later, it still holds up as not looking like a complete throwback.

This was the last car my father ever bought, he had owned Lincoln Continental Mark's since the Mark III in 1969. He loved that '93 Lincoln, it had over 300-thousand miles on her (Yes, it was a female, he named her "Lizzy the Lincoln") when he passed away three years ago, it sits proudly in my garage now. I restored her a bit, it was over 20 years old after all, and had a few small dents and scratches. All I did was detail it and still drive her whenever the mood strikes me. What a great and innovative sport/luxury car! The first of her kind. I wish Lincoln built similar cars today.

Everything on this car was ahead of it's time in 1993. I mean a DOHC 32V 4.6L V8 with 280HP (when the Mustang GT's 5.0L HO made what... 225HP?), RWD with Independent Rear Suspension (Hello 2015 Mustang) and Air-Ride. Even the LED tail-light was ahead of it's time. Not to mention that interior was amazing. But no one really noticed. People today don't even realize that Fords DOHC modular V8 goes way back to 1993. Let alone that Ford had RWD vehicles with IRS in 1989 (Thunderbird chassis that this is based off) so yeah, respect the Mark VIII! This car put Cadillac in their place but since recent times it's the other way around for sure. Think about it, if Lincoln would make the equivalent today we would have a RWD coupe with an eco-boost V8 and 600HP to battle the supercharged V8 CTS-V's and the likes from GM.
@aaronhaycraft940
@aaronhaycraft940 8 жыл бұрын
Ford DOHC goes back way past 1993. The US forces Sherman tank utilized a 32 valve DOHC engine sourced from ford WAY back in WW2. This technology has been in the US for over 70 years now. I actually saw one of these GAA series engines placed into a tube frame 65ish Mustang about 10 years ago.
@331Grabber
@331Grabber 8 жыл бұрын
Sad thing is in those days Lincoln ranked above Cadillac in the minds of consumers thanks to all those recent 80's attempts by GM to make cheap affordable Caddies like the Cimmeron. But GM really saved Cadillac's image over the last 20 years and now it would be a lot of work for Ford to make BMW and Mercedes drivers cross shop for Lincolns the way they do for Caddies. Ford could do it. They have the Engines and HP and handling covered. But they need to offer a viable 2 door coupe like the old Mark VIII with a manual transmission or paddle shifted dual clutch auto with mag ride.

hitek9wittafulclip hahaha.. Yeah, that would have been really nice!!!! Especially if you're a passenger waiting on a taxi.. With nearly 300-hp under the hood.. You'll be at your destination in no time.. I mean, literally!!!! Even the Lincoln town-cars get down with pretty-good power in its own respectable right.. So just imagine, if it was carrying this v-8 high-output 93 motor/engine under the hood... Jesus-Christ!!!!😦😧😳🚘🏁
@lexusls
@lexusls 6 жыл бұрын
The output is respectable but not amazing, even for that time... well, it IS amazing for FoMoCo standards in the 90s I guess. The comparison car in this video (Lexus SC400) has the notoriously reliable and bulletproof 1UZ-FE which is a 4.0L V8 DOHC 32v. That engine was designed in the late 80's and released in 1989 with the 1990 Lexus LS400. Power was 250HP @5600 RPM and 260ft-lbs @4400 RPM. So this Lincoln eeking out another 30HP and 25ft-lbs of torque from 0.6L more displacement 4 years after the 1UZ-FE was released isn't anything outstanding. That being said, I do have to give Ford props for actually getting the output proportionate to the displacement... something they almost always failed to do until recent years.

I was 9 yrs old when this car came out and I remember seeing them around in the '90s. It always was a cool design (great blend of modern with classic design cues) but I never thought too much of them. I had no idea how serious they were in terms of hp and performance. Wow. In '93 this thing was a beast. Heck, a decade later, the Lincoln LS v8 made the same horsepower (280 bhp)..

I got my license in 1992 and remember the mediocrity like it was yesterday. all the same, I actually rather miss cars from that era. There is a fundamental flaw in your argument though. Just because most of the rest of the cars were complete crap, doesn't mean that this slightly less crappy car deserves to be called " one of the best cars ford ever made" Do you really think it lives up to that? Looking back at Ford's many many models of the years would this thing even crack the top 10? or even the top 25? Nope, didn't think so. off topic but my dad's car in 92 was a lovely e32 730i and amongst my cars today I have an e38 1996 740il and let me tell you there is/was nothing mediocre about either of those. Got the 740il 2 years ago as a winter beater and it's not missed a step. Close to 300hp, reliable, not a speck of rust and simple stable at all speeds and capable in the snow... I know right?.....but thirsty as all hell. Just upset i've not been able to find one in Estoril Blue.

Ford's 1990s-vintage MN12 Thunderbird/Cougar, along with the Lincoln FN10 variant, were the ultimate expression of the mid-size muscle couple/luxury sport coupe in the entire era of unleaded gasoline. The MN12 family may never have reached the level of raw horsepower of the prematurely cancelled Buick Grand National with its twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6, and they were a bit on the heavy side, but nobody ever matched the level of refinement of these coupes. The MN12 family was in a class by itself. It was tragic that sales declined and the line was cancelled. What would a modern version of these coupes look like? Would it have Lincoln's 2.7-liter turbo V6? Or maybe the F-150's hybrid 3.5-liter turbo system? Or would it be all-electric? It's a shame that we'll never know. Truly, the 1990s-vintage Continental Mark VIII was an underrated legend in its time.

I am not a Ford person of any kind, but, in my opinion, this was the best looking modern Lincoln. Well, I mean it's old now but it is a beautiful car, and was nice to drive when I got the chance to drive one.

My parents still have their ‘93 in ruby red in mint condition with 78K miles on it. Still the best interior of any vehicle and the quickest year of any Mark 8. No fake chrome inside either.

They didn't mention that the car automatically lowers above 50 or 60 mph for improved handling. Leased one in '93, wish I had bought it. Never a problem.

I was in absolute love with this car when it first came out. Interior was really cool for the time and though materials were a bit of a let down - a tradition Ford continues to present day - it is still my favorite American luxo-barge.

It gained 10hp/ 10tq over the previous years and got considerably slower. Your previous review had the 32V 4.6L Continential going 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds vs 7.0 and 14.9@97mph vs 15.3@93. That's almost half a second/ five mph which is quite significant.

The great thing about the Mark VIII today is that their 6 year run (93-96 first gen, 98-98 2nd gen) means that there is a very small likelihood of seeing yourself on the road. I prefer the Gen II overall, these are still great cars and low mileage ones are in demand.

This was a gorgeous design. I love this car. Especially the LSC. I've never liked air suspended cars. I saw so many of these ridding low because the suspension bladders were inoperable/ disrepair. And way-minute, is that an engine cover I see??

After I totaled my 94 Taurus SHO, I bought a 93 Mark VIII with the insurance money. A Superchip and exhaust made this thing crazy fast. I did replace the air-ride with traditional struts force stiffer ride. I preferred it without air-ride. Wish I had it longer. I got it in 2002 w/ 48k miles. What a steal.

What mods you got on your F-150? Because I know you're not running a 5.6 second 0-60 stock in a 2014 5.0L F-150. I own a 2011 F-150 5.0L with only an exhaust mod and the best 0-60 I've managed was about 6.7 seconds.

Interesting review. The 2nd generation 1997-98 versions of the Mark VIII are even better. I'm currently looking for one with less than 80,000 miles on it. They are out there. One just has to be patient and wait. From what I can tell, the 2nd generation is slightly longer and has an even more radical wrap-around front dash that continues into the passenger doors. I'm amazed at how so many of them I find for sale have been trashed and not worth bothering with. A nice 40 to 60 thousand miles well-maintained 97 or 98 should cost about $12,500. Not bad for such a lovely zoomerado.
