I have a 1998 Mark 8 with 100,000 miles on it. Everything still works beautifully. In my opinion, this is probably the best car that's ever been made. Period. It is a joy to drive. It's worth keeping up. I will fix the original air ride when they finally do go bad.

Wish I would have gone out and found a real nice 98 LSC about 10 years ago and just put it away in storage, these are damn hard to find in the Midwest(Rust belt of the world) now that aren't beat to death/roached/rusted to shit. I didn't have the money in my 20's to buy one new and now they are hard as hell to find. To bad FoMoCo and the rest of the big three won't build CARS anymore.

Your old man and I could go bowling together... I had a black '97 LSC back in 2002, I still say it's the best car I ever had. It certainly got the most comments. Unfortunately I sold it after only a year as it just wasn't practical as a DD (had a *very* tight parking arrangement and rust belt winters). When I had a better situation in later years, I was turned off of buying another one due to unavailability of parts like the air suspension (no, I'm not doing coil springs), headlight bulbs (yes, really), and numerous other one-off parts... this was the downside of it being so forward-reaching. It's just another old car now, but back in the 90's this had a mind-blowing road presence.

Also a big problem with all of them Mark 8’s is the air ride system. It costs a lot of money to fix it when it goes up but there is a fix for that find yourself a 94 or up Ford Thunderbird or Mercury cougar preferably a V-8 model and switch the suspension over and you’ll have to get the air ride system turned off with your tune otherwise you’re constantly have a warning light because you no longer have an air ride system there. The Thunderbird and cougar were of the chassis designation MN12 and the chassis designation for the Lincoln was FN10. The chassis between the two are almost identical but there was enough changes for the Lincoln that it got its own chassis designation. Also with the Lincoln 97 and 98 models with the H ID headlights it is stupid expensive to fix those when one of the ballasts goes bad

Yeahbone of the few problems. Another problem is the firewall cracking, the rear x brace cracking, the heater blend door actuator breaking, the headlights cant be found, the oil filters in a horrible spot and you have to be experienced to remove it, the second gen has a neon ballast tail light which is impossible to find a new replacement for. So yeah its one of the best looking cars ever, and has the best interior for a driver.... but ifnyou arent a mechanic or rich then good luck. Iv owned 5 and i currently have a 98 with 93kmiles... oh yah and the front rotors warp even with oem parts. Anyhow i have 50 more things i can list for either generation

I joined the Sunshine State Marauders after I bought my '04 and there was a man who was a member, but didn't own one! I forget his name but he had a auto repair shop in Lake City I think, and he was good at finding parts for us: much of the $5000 worth of brake and suspension mods I put on mine I got through him. He was the man who made the modifications for the Marauders the FHP bought for the RADAR program down Miami ways. He had a Mark VIII with one of Jerry Barnes' Trilogy kits that was made for the Marauder. If you don't know what a Trilogy kit is, it's a well engineered manifold kit with all the trimmings to mount the blower that was on the '04 Mustang Cobra: boosts that 300 HP Marauder engine up to 450 HP! His Mark VIII would outrun all of us because it was lighter of course, but we let him join anyways. lol

Tazz Lesh Actually the late 95 lsc models and all 96 lsc models only had hid lights factory but ONLY on the lsc models. 97-98 (the model years I own) were the first to have hid headlights as standard along with being an industry first to have a led taillight and “puddle lights” on the mirrors.

I purchased my 1998 Charcoal Green LSC from Copart in Virgina for $350! 61,310 verified miles. A tree branch had fallen upon the C-pillar causing some compression and the moon roof glass was cracked. The 1997 Thunderbird moon roof is identical to the one in the 1998 LSC, so I pulled one from a donor T-Bird at LKQ Pick-Your-Part for $58. My brother installed the new glass and drove the car across the USA to the California high desert last Fall. In May I bought four new tires from Les Schwab, installed new brake hoses and retrieved a brake proportioning valve from LKQ (again!) for $14. Now I have a Lincoln "Super Coupe" that rivals my Eldorados! Today the car has 65,092 miles.

I had a 96. Knew it was badass, but didn't realize HOW badass it was! The drivers seat was like a wraparound space shuttle cockpit. It was a very under marketed car that never got the recognition it deserved. They had a commercial of an apple falling from a tree and the driver racing to let it fall through the sunroof to catch it. Back then Lincoln was your grandfathers car. Few even knew the MK8 existed. I know of a very old woman with a pearl white 98 LSC. It mostly sits in her garage these days. Without being disrespectful, the family is aware of my interest in the car when she no longer needs it.

I had a 93 Mark for a few years. Parts are limited for them but can be done. Built my own 2.5 dual exhaust with x pipe from the manifolds back to a single Flowmaster 40 dual in/out. It sounded amazing. The cobra underdrive pullies went right on and made my own 4" cold are intake. It scooted for a heavy car. Beat up on GTPs and lt1 F bodies. Hung with auto ls1 cars for a little bit. When the bags went replaced them with coil overs. With a hub swap they can run the Mustangs wheels. Miss that car

I had a 1995 T-Bird. It had a 4.6 V8. It could take off like a bat out of hell. I had issues with the torque converter. I didn't replace the torque converter, I knew a guy that worked as a Ford mechanic. He changed the transmission fluid and put a special Ford additive in the fluid. It stopped it from vibrating.

I had one back in the day. In 1997 they went to coil on plug. Before that it had two coil packs. *Never had a distributor.* The only real way to make it accelerate is to swap out the diff. I had a 4:10, cat-less custom mandrel-bent duals, and a custom-tune from Dennis Reinhardt. If you're in North Florida go see Dennis. He probably knows more about Mark VIIIs than anyone alive.

My mom had one of these. The amount of electrical issues I had to fix on it was astounding. Just about every sensor on the thing had to be replaced at some point in time and I probably had to replace a dead plug coil at least 10 times.

The coil packs weren't a problem IF replaced with the OEM (Motorcraft) pieces. Absolutely no other coil pack was equal and absolutely WAS guaranteed to fail.

I loved my ‘98 LSC with a chip tune. When the tach hits 3K the secondary runners open and it’s like a turbo kicking in! 280K miles with the only mechanical issues being plugs, a couple of coil packs and a fuel pump (NEVER buy gas while the tanker truck is dropping its load!) Tires, brakes 3X because it’s a heavy car to stop especially when it begs to be driven fast. Luxurious seating, great way to cover 600+ miles a day with power or auto everything. When I traded it at 280K it still used less than 1/2 quart of Mobil 1 per 10K miles.

My 1997 Mark VIII LSC just turned 101K miles last week. I'm the original owner. Had to do the halogen headlight conversion in 2008. About 10 years ago, we went through a heavy maintenance cycle - new air suspension, ignition coils, new radiator, blend door actuator, serpentine belt. Approximately $6K in repairs altogether. Like some other commentors, I have experienced various electrical/sensor issues & quirkiness. Especially early on. Had to replace the radio. The steering wheel tilt/retract/telescope function was a major problem for several years initially. Sometimes it would just freeze in the retracted position, making it feel like I was driving a bus! In and out of the shop half a dozen times over that. The dealership never did figure that one out. Then, one day in 2006, the darned telescoping function just started working, seemingly on its own, and I haven't had a problem with it since. The tilt function remained quirky, even to this day. But, eventually I learned that by leaning on the steering wheel while pushing the adjustment button, the tilt potentiometer will (usually) engage and adjust the tilt accordingly. The key word here is "usually". Some days, it just ain't tilting, period! I almost got rid of it after the blend door problem, but really glad I held on to it. It still rides like a dream. Idling at a red light, you can't even feel the engine running. The Mark is now my weekend/pleasure vehicle. My 2019 Honda Accord Sport turbo 2.0L 6M eats up most of the miles now and is a fun ride, too. But the Lincoln will always be my favorite!

One small detail thing about these cars is they had a factory aluminum driveshaft. 1993 was the only year to use the most desireable style 1 piece shaft though (then they went to 2 piece). I only know this because I was a Thundervird SC guy for a long time and that's what we would look for to swap into our cars on a budget. Actually still have one in the garage from forever ago.

@@ninevoltmodz4687 I have never tried it and the guy who posted this never answered me as you can tell here. I honestly would replace the air suspension with regular coil springs. It didn't ride that great with the air suspension when I test drove one. The ride jiggled a lot and it was too hard over bad roads. For my money..I would buy the first year of the last ElDorado. That car had a nice ride and better interior. But..you have to be careful if you get one with the Northstar engine over the head gasket issue the Northstar's had. Only the first year ElDorado had a non-Northstar engine..and that is the one I test drove and it was awesome.

Nightbird the Northstar is fixable. A kit can be installed that converts the bolt holes into studs . Then you can slide the heads down the the studs and secure them with nuts . Check into it . A lot are coming on the market now that have been modified. Very dependable after fixed . Some getting over 500,000 miles before needing rebuild.

Top speed was computer limited. Back then, Lincoln too a 93 Mark to Bonneville, removed the software limitations, took off the mirrors and two brake rotors to remove drag, and ran it up to 182MPH for the record at the time for production cars.

You're correct, my air suspension went bad. I no longer remember the cost, but it was enough that I converted it to coils. These are nice high-quality cars and if you like them get one. There are just too many cars I've never owned to make me consider getting a Mark VIII again.

GM's Northstar did 300hp and 295tq with the allante in 93. 4.6L, 32V. Too bad its was FWD and the engine blew the heads at 100k.

The Northstar's reliability makes the 32v modular seem like a Camry. Besides the head bolt problems, they leaked oil everywhere.. everything is difficult and expensive to fix. Overheating all the time... Ugh.. that thing is a nightmare. It could have been so good too.

Seriously, it's the first 32V modular engine, but the similarities to the Cobra end there. You'd have to do some SERIOUS internal modification to get one to Cobra specs.

Same rods and pistons, forged crank for the cobra, same spec intake cam, different spec exhaust cam, different tune, mark viii only got an auto 4r70w trans where the cobra got the 5 spd manual. 96 to 98 cobra engines were almost identical to the 93 to 98 mark viii engines.

Thanks for the video. I sold my 98 Mark viii last fall. It had only 82,000 miles. It had custom duals with rear cats deleted and a tune. My best 0 to 60 was 6.2 seconds. If that car had a modern 8 speed auto it would be in the mid 5's. The only drawback to these is the price of parts and some questionable designs. I had a Hemi Magnum and my Mark viii was as quick 0 to 100. If the governor is disabled they can hit 155 (but you better have a good one piece driveshaft).

I ran into a fellow about 3 weeks after these were released, and he had just the day before returned from a road trip in his brand- new Mark VIII. I commented about how nice it looked, and he told me that it was the most comfortable Lincoln he'd ever owned (this one was his seventh). The killer though, was his fuel economy. The trip took him from Boise (where I met him) to Seattle, then to Portland, Oregon, on down to San Francisco, then to Los Angeles and Las Vegas. He had just arrived home the previous day and was fuelling up to figure his mileage. The whole trip averaged 27mpg. I must have looked like I didn't believe him, so he showed me his figures, and I don't believe he was BSing even a little bit!

I can confirm this. I'm the original owner of a '97 Mark VIII LSC. It just turned 101K miles last week (April 2023). On long road trips, I usually get 26 - 27 mpg on the highway. On one trip, I filled up in Paramus, NJ, headed west and did not stop (or even slow down much) from there through the entire state of Pennsylvania. Was nearly bone dry when I filled up 428 miles later, in Streetsboro, Ohio!

Unlike coils, air suspensions require maintenance, as the bags get cut by rocks and such thrown up by the tires. So you have to replace the bags when they start to go. As soon as you see one end of the car starting to sag a bit, just replace that single air bag and you're good until the next one dies. DON'T just let it keep getting worse, or you'll destroy your air pump!

I had a 93 mark VIII with a "chip" tune that had to be mounted to the ECU. It would run 15.3 @ 93 all day long. With better gearing probably 4.10, and a little more work Im sure it could have gotten into the 14's.....Alas I blew up the trans and got rid of it...

It's basically a T bird with a trim/engine/suspension package. I went looking for a late 90's T bird, but as I was finding more clean mark viii's, (I guess because people who would buy Lincolns were more likely to keep their cars in a garage). So I wound up with a '98 LSC. Nice car, even though it was 17 years old when I got mine. Air suspension parts available from American Air Conversion. OH, and they're not beaten to death like virtually all Mustangs are by boy racers who just love doing burn outs and doing donuts. Nope, these cars are babied and well taken care of. Mine even came with complete maintenance history. Just needed the blend door fix (local Lincoln dealer did it).

A guy I used to be friends with was always a die-hard GM and Jeep guy and outright HATED anything made by Ford....until about 15 years ago when he was in an accident at work and ended up with permanent severe back and neck injuries and he could no longer ride more than 100 miles a day without ending up laid up for 2 - 3 days to recover. ( He was a locomotive engineer and the train had a blowdown of the brakes and he got bounced around the cabin like a super ball). I talked him into buying a cheap 76 Lincoln Continental for his wife. He quickly gave her his Pontiac Grand Prix and he took the Lincoln after he rode 200 miles In it and felt great when he got home. After that he bought 2 98 Lincoln Mark VII's and one was the LSC. That is the ONLY car I have ever ridden in that you could lock the cruise In at 130 MPH. He's been a FoMoCo fan ever since he got the 76 Continental and now Ford products are all he will drive.

The fastest Mark viii from the factory testing maxed out at 182mph. I think they changed the rear end gearing. Best mods for this car is jmod, 4:10 gears, exhaust, tune.
