Well, today a CTS-v2 goes anywhere from 30-40 grand while you can pick up an e60 m5 for under 20,000 bucks. Time has decided which car is better it seems.

I agree. I had the privelage of driving the new M5 around a month back through a good friend's business. I used to like the V10 M5 (still do) but the new one is just leagues ahead of anything else out there at the moment for a mix of speed and luxury. I don't know if you've driven one but if not book a test drive. It's a very strange experience when a car so relaxed slams you in the seat. It doesn't need revving like the V10 - it just picks up and goes hard as soon as you floor it.

@gmman05 Remember that the M5 engine and platform was conceived in 2004. The CTS-V wasn't until late '06-early '07. Plus, its 1.2 liters smaller in displacement and is naturally aspirated. I'm not knocking the CTS-V, its a great car no doubt, but just don't forget those figures

I like both these cars and unlike most of the posters here, I really am not overly loyal to any specific brand, but rather how well they do their mission. I have an M6 convertible and am very familiar with the V10 in the M5 as well as the SMG. The V10 is incredible in its own way, but if you have driven a blown V8 (my last car was a modded E55) you really miss the torque. The Cadillac has 40% more torque than the M5 and really make a difference off the line. I like my M6s build quality...like granite...but if I was in the market for a sedan, the CTS-V, and its incredible value, would make it one of my top choices. My only negative is the angular body. Looks great front on, but kind of plain from the sides.

You're nuts. I've owned CTS's and three BMW 4-series, and you think that CTS looks plain compared to that flat out ugly 5-series, which is as generic as it gets? This era of BMWs is awful they're just ugly cars, and thankfully that styling was changed when the 4-series came out for 2014. The 4-series, is a great looking car from every angle, but the 5 and 3 series both look generic as hell. If we're only talking about these two cars, head to head, I'd take the Caddy any day of the week.

@@rodmunch69 He didn’t respond but I will I agree the angular body of the cats-v looks like they tried really hard to be edgy and different but that running gear is the main reason you would purchase it . Now the M5 just a pain to think that someone thought it was a great idea to allow them to put the potential that that motor has into that body style of car. I mean a damn V10 the last v10 road car outside of Audi’s s series that we will ever get to see “because of the leash holders” placed inside the body of a brick with the edges sanded off I would purchase the BMW 2nd hand only because of the engine in it .

Caddy is a better deal, and GM should be proud of their accomplishment. If I was wealthy enough that I could buy either, I'd choose the Bimmer - love that 8250rpm V10, stellar brakes and great road feel. However, with price being a factor, I'd have to consider a 2yr old Bimmer vs the Caddy. Tough choice. Caddy rides nice, performs better and is new vs. used. Still, it's ugly next to the Bimmer. I'd call it a tossup. I'd be thrilled with either. I've only been in M5, and love it.

BMW us a naturally aspirated engine in this car but a v10 block not a v8 so it's a fair fight but not when the car is compared with a brand new Cadillac. If they'd waited a year and compared the BMW m5 f10 with the Cadillac and we'd see that absolutely every figure would be not marginally better than the Cadillac but miles better.

The M5 has a paddle shift automatic option as well, I don't know why they didn't use it. Despite that, I do I think the CTS-V would still have better numbers, but the margins would be much tighter. With 50 more hp and 170 more lb/ft of torque, it'd be an absolute embarrassment if it wasn't faster.

to furknee06 question: what determains engine torque is generally two things 1)engine size the larger engine will develop more torque then a smaller one (even if the smaller motor makes more horse power then a larger engine. so engine size = torque 2) if you don't have engine size u can increase torque through turbos or superchargers called boost induced torque. these are generally and main ways of developing torque

Also, neandjd, if the M5 could beat the CTS-V's Nurburgrings lap time, BMW would have done so by now. Even when these 2 were pitted against each other on their 1st official match in Oct 2008 Road & Track, ( on video too), the CTS-V came to the fight with the manual only. The BMW came with SMG and manual versions. Manual M5 was scrapped, yet SMG M5 still didn't beat the CTS-V with manual. Maybe not. M5's are usually broken in, & by the time they did this test, the CTS-V wasn't. Months before the CTS-V was for sale, Edmunds kept a good page on the progress of the CTS-V. GM testers said manual & auto versions get identical numbers 0-60 in 3.9, & 1/4 in 12.0. Those cars they were testing had definetly been broken in. CTS-V has a better power to weight ratio than M5, with a capable suspension setup. Neither transmission is sluggish. Stock vs.stock, CTS-V will always be ahead.

Jumping on this late, but the displacement doesn't necessarily mean engine size. The LS7 is smaller and lighter than a BMW 4L V8 or their V10. It also gets better mileage and better power ratings. It is a far superior performing engine, even if it is pushrod.

With the previous CTS-V Caddy gave serious thought to creating a CTS-V+. If the 2009 CTS-V gets trumped slighty ( because that's all there is room for), I hope GM gives that serious thought again. They could keep the same power, or even up it a little, but the real deal will be in making it weigh less. It uses a full steel frame, so they could use a lighter one, slighly lighter rims, and carbon fiber body panels. Sure, it'd cost more, but it will still handle better, and cost less than the comp.

I've owned two CTS's and three BMW 4-series, and man does that CTS look fantastic. I had one that look just like the one at the start, except in sunset metallic orange, an absolutely beautiful car. That 5-series meanwhile is very generic looking, there's a reason I never paid attention to BMW before the 4-series came around in 2014. With that said, Cadillac went off the rails with their next-gen CTS after this, it got too big and too expensive, and the ATS was too small and cramped for my liking. Also, the thing that killed Cadillac for me, was the God awful CUE Infotainment system, when I went to the dealer in late 2013 to get another Cadillac, that stupid CUE setup was terrible, it was so slow and laggy and frustrating to use, it was why I left and went to the BMW dealership, knowing nothing about BMWs at all - but I saw the, then, new 4-series, and it was such a good looking car, fun to drive, I bought one on the spot.

Traded my 2015 M4 for a 2009 cts-v. M4 was much too underpowered for my liking. And modding the M was very expensive. The 09 V has been modded to 800whp, me and my kids love it. Love bmw but it lacks brute strength
@rodmunch69
@rodmunch69 Жыл бұрын
@@gd8205 I had a 2008 CTS that was completely loaded, in terms of looks, it was amazing - sunset orange, had the CTS-V grill and some other aftermarket parts, but just the base engine. I've owned a couple of Corvette's as well and I'm always partial to GM's V8's - and I know what you mean, although not at the scale you're talking about. But the BMW's make very smooth power, but it doesn't throw you back in your seat the way a GM V8 does - not that I've had anything close to 800hp. With that said, the one thing I do like about the BMW's is that they are so incredibly precise and balanced, that's its counter to brute force. I find myself, generally, getting another car every 18 to 24 months, and I'll switch between something balanced and precise and something that is a bit more fun and powerful. So next car, I might go back to Cadillac and get something like a '14 CTS-V coupe, one of my favorite looking cars ever. The only issue, to me, is that while the CTS interior from that era looks amazing, it's very outdated from a tech standpoint, with no way (I'm aware of) to really update it with modern conveniences like Carplay or putting in a much higher resolution screen instead. But I also haven't looked into it in a while, so maybe there's some aftermarket solutions.

@@rodmunch69 very well said. I agree with you totally. Love the refinement of the bmw but brutality of the ctsv. Maybe try the C8 corvette? I have a deposit down on a Z06 but it will take time to get my allocation

You, Sir, are NOT my enemy. I read the edmunds review of the new 2010Mercedes Benz E63 AMG. It doesn't even appear to have a leg up on this Cadillac. Yet, I don't know what it's power to weight ratio is. I'll be going to the New York Int Auto Show soon, and check it out though. The Porsche Panamera, will be very expensive in top form, but at 3900 lbs, give or take, it may have a chance at matching or beating the Cadillac. But I still prefer the CTS-V. Waiting for the coupe version.

Well, the BMW M5, is a very refined car itself, its power and technolgy, the body and the looks aren't that great, it could look like a new Honda, Toyota or something like that for someone that doesn't know anything about cars, but this time GM made a huge step forward with this vehicle, although Caddys have the reputation of strong and very well made cars for longevity, the CTS is the perfect combination for muscle car, luxury sedans, sports cars and money savers lovers ... My opinion.

Even though the cost don't truly justify the Porsche, I feel it's a player because it too will be considered a High Performance Luxury Sedan. But like the host says, I'd buy the CTS-V sedan or coupe, before anything else, and keep more of my winnings.

Just so you know, I've pretty easily beaten an SMG-equipped E60 M5 in my completely stock CTS-V STATION WAGON with a 6-speed manual. So you are completely, 100% wrong about that.

It may not win on initial price but it gets much closer on cost to own when you take resale into it. It's a larger investement but you get a higher percentage back when you sell. After a couple of years they will both have cost about £20k. Even ignoring that I know which one I would have.

alright, your right ctsv is the better car. Just one question for you sir and i dont mean anything bad . Dont lie but have you driven both cars ? Thing is i had the privilege to drive both. I prefered the M5 over the cts for the feedback i got , also the v10 sounded like banshees outta hell ! but anyways thanx for the info, learned alot.

Ive driven both the ctsv and the m5. The cadi is unbelievably fast but is not in par with the interior . The seats although leather felt cheap in the cts, and it had suede everywhere. And besides the M5 engine will always be better than the ctsv v8 even though the caddy has more power. Id take a high revving v10 anyday..

CTS-V is an exception tho because it was tuned to handle the nurburgh track in Germany which is why its able to perform better track times than the M5. Im an audi fan my self so i wont hop on the cadi wagon yet because BMW is going to relaese a new M5 soon which will probally destroy the caddi with ease but for now in 2009 the caddi comes out on top in all aspects and BMW fans cant really say anything

With AMG having their normal AMG, and AMG Black Series Editions, a + division for Caddy wouldn't cheapen the brand. The demographics are the only thing that needs to be studied, but after the economy gets better. But with a Caddy, at this price, costing 20K or better less, with matching or better performance, Caddy does have the upper hand.

Cadi is a way better deal! But if they were bolth the same price I'd take the BMW for reliability,fit and finish. If I wanted to turn heads I'd want the cadi, it's way more agersive looking!

Cadillac has better quality ratings than BMW does, and let's see if you can actually define "integrity" in this context. The CTS-V is the better car, for a vastly lower price.

Your probably right. I'm just trying to paint the typical scenario. Honestly Caddilac has made a disproportional amount of crappy cars or overpriced cars that are junk in a few years. Personally I like the CTS in general and think it has just as good of build quality as any car (except maybe the interior) but it will take more than one good model for a brand to hold good value. The CTSV maybe the exception to the rule. because lets face other GM cars didn't hold like that.

Like I said, come back and talk to me after you've driven a CTS-V. You don't need 390 lb-ft of torque to drive a car either, this isn't about whether it's necessary to make the car move. This is about how it makes the car feel when you drive it. Because the CTS-V has so much torque you don't need to downshift to pass people. It's just nicer than having to downshift any time you want to do anything.

the cady has 6 piston brembo calipers. it should have the superior brakes if used with the proper pads and master cylinder. I like bmw cars especially the m3 and m5 but I like the cts-v. finally gm is showing it can build decent cars. people will buy them if they would just build them.

Yeah I've driven the V10 M5. It's a nice car, but it lacks torque and it's not as sharp or as fun to drive. And frankly the suspension isn't as good at absorbing bumps mid-corner, it's less stable.
