In 2009 the CTS-V beat the M5 by a slim margin. Do this today in the even more powerful F10 M5 & the mk.3 CTS-V, and I bet the Cadillac will walk all over the BMW all over again. I hope a 2015/16 version of this battle will surface.

so far every road test I've seen gave the win to the ctsv. had to know that the Beemer lovers would come unglued.they just can't accept that an American car could beat out that M5. it's highly unlikely that the editors are being biased. car editors love BMW 's... As far as I'm concerned, the M5 is boring. it's lines and styling are lame. even if the Beemer smoked the caddy I'd still take the caddy just on looks alone.

+Fernando Lagunas 500 hp outa 5 liter engine. you know it'll never last, it's over complicated and gonna be prone to problems. gm has the technology to easily pull 550 hp outa that 6.2 but lower compression and super charging makes more sense. that v10 will empty your wallet when it goes for a shit. and it will

+Greg Or Jen 507 hp. The E60 BMW M5 is not prone to problems. I should know because I have a M5. That GM has the technology, does not really make sense to say. This is BMW. The M5 used F1 technology. Jeremy Clarkson has said the M5 is one of the best cars he has every driven. My wallet is still full.

+Fernando Lagunas high horsepower,small displacement engines aren't exactly know for reliability.and just because it uses so called f1 technology doesn't make it any more reliable. that's a fact. and if you can get a Beemer owner to get there heads out there asses ,you might actually find out the cars aren't as perfect as they think they are. I should know, I work on euro cars everyday. they keep me employed.

@Dgannt
@Dgannt 10 жыл бұрын
Refinement cost. That is what you want in a luxury sporty sedan. A sure footed car that delivers power smoothly and handles smoothly with a cabin quality to match the rest. But the cheaper hot rod like Caddy has also it's merits, but at a lower entry level.
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 10 жыл бұрын
Actually the CTS-V is exactly what you just described. You've never driven a CTS-V so you have no idea what you're talking about, but there's a reason they use a 6.2 liter V8, and it's called TORQUE. Do you know what torque translates to? SMOOTHNESS. And of course the magnetic suspension takes care of ride smoothness, something you would already know if you had ever driven one. And the steering is spot on, it's ridiculously surefooted and neutral feeling, far mores than you would expect form a heavy car like that. Again, you would have had to drive one to understand that. The only thing "lower" about the CTS-V is the price, everything else is better than the M5.
@Dgannt
@Dgannt 10 жыл бұрын
Vernon Price The price is not lower, at least not when it gets to Europe or many other places around the world. And it's not that sure footed according to this test. A bit nose heavy and lose back, which means it turns good into a corner but when pushed you will lose the back and end driving backward. That is opposite of M5. If you push the M5 you wont lose the back but get a mild understeer that tells you you are getting to the limit. So which one is better in a luxury performance sedan? And this NA V10 could holed it's own against this monster 6,2L supercharged Caddy despite having more than 50 hp less. The new M5 has a 4,4L twine turbo engine delivering almost 600 hp and a tone of torque. Also too much torque is not good either. A little sportines is good even in these luxury cars and reving the engine can be rewarding. Something you can do in the M5. Then we got the bigger space in both 3 and 5-series compared to their Caddy counterparts. The new Cadillacs are great cars compared to what they used to build before the 2008 crash. They have come a long way but I think most know BMW still is the class leader.
@MrMightyZ
@MrMightyZ 10 жыл бұрын
@Vernon Price this guy is weighing pros and cons whereas you are simply saying the Caddy is better in every way. I own a high powered RWD GM sedan and I LOVE it but the guys doing this test just said there are a few areas in which the Beemer is better. Gets it's power down better, feels more expensive, better interior. The Caddy would be my choice but it is obviously not better than the BMW in every way. Beware the one-eyed supporter for he has abandoned reason.
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 10 жыл бұрын
Dave L Oh so the Caddy is not better in every way? The BMW "gets its power down better" because it's down almost 200 lb-ft of torque from the CTS-V. It's like saying it gets its power down better because it doesn't have enough torque to spin the wheels. Is that really an advantage? "feels expensive" is completely subjective and the interior on that M5 is definitely not better than the one in the CTS-V. Have you seen both of them? Also Bezor Ta is a well known BMW fanboy, He's not ever reasonable, and he hates Cadillac. He's posted in many, many other threads about this. And you're saying I've abandoned reason, even though I'm right? By saying that, it sounds like you've abandoned reason, as you don't seem to have any interest in the truth.
@Dgannt
@Dgannt 10 жыл бұрын
Vernon Price Come on, I don't hate Cadillac. But instead of praising Cadillac for what it has achieved and their new cars one has to argue against guys like you who make over the top assumptions. BMW did not become BMW over the night. They have long experience in making luxury sedans and coupes and also performance models. They have been class leaders for a long time and acknowledging that fact is not being a BMW fanboy. It's facts. And saying BMW is better than Cadillac is not being BMW fanboy. Again it's a fact. Cadillac turned things around seriously first after 2008. And while their cars are good they are not as good or even better (according to guys like you) than BMW. Yes the CTS-V has a powerful engine but as many reviewers has said it doesn't always work so well with the transmission. Power delivery is not as refined as in the BMW and that BMW has enough power to spin lose the wheels but it spins less because it puts down power better, thanks to a better chassis. The quality is better and while the same size BMW manages to have bigger space in their cars. A lot of small things like that add up to a better car. This is like Corvette and the new Stingray. You want to praise GM for making such a nice new car. But oh no, once again you have to explain to some delusional Vette fans why it's not as good as Ferrari. Then they say I hate Corvette. I actually want to buy one because I like it. But I'm not that delusional to say it's a better car than 458.

CTSV is in a completely different category. E60 M5 is superior in every way. It's not even fair to pit them against each other. I am not talking about "on paper" I am talking about real life application. Also, the Cadillac ages really badly, but the M5 is timeless. Don't believe me then take a look at Bimmers' predecessors, not to mention their residual value. Argument over. Go home CTSV you're defeated.
@nickb3668
@nickb3668 10 жыл бұрын
Lol whatever you want to tell yourself. The CTS-V was faster, therefore the M5 is not superior in "every way." Youre going to be really pissed when the next gen CTS-V wipes the floor with the M5 again, for less money.
@jeremiah584
@jeremiah584 10 жыл бұрын
***** That was very well stated. It seems a bit strange that we are debating which of these cars is best when they are far from equally yoked. It's like comparing apples to oranges, or Bimmers to Cadillacs in this case.
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 10 жыл бұрын
***** And how are they not comparable again, exactly? The CTS-V beats the M5 in every measurable way, so what are you not clear about? Clearly the CTS-V is the best car, they proved that multiple times so if there is any confusion about why they're being compared, it has to be confusion as to why the M5 is still being mentioned. You would have to be an idiot to buy a much more expensive M5 over the better performing, better handling, faster CTS-V.
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 10 жыл бұрын
***** Except the E60 M5 never did it in 7:52. That is a fake time, as I've already pointed out to you multiple times already. The E60 M5 did it in a best of 8:13. Please tell me you're not stupid enough to believe the E60 M5 was faster than the F10 M5 around the nurburgring. Are you that stupid? The CTS-V beats the E60 M5 in every measurable way, and I say that because it was actually measured. The CTS-V was faster in the slalom, it braked in a shorter distance, it has a higher skidpad, it's faster in a straight line and it got through their course faster too. So what part of "faster in every measurable way" are you having difficulty understanding? The fact that you're bringing aftermarket modifications into the discussion is proof positive that you lost. Oh but if you like, please tell me how you add "a couple of superchargers" to an M5. I want to see if you even recognize the fact that you're talking out of your ass. And price is a set thing, it's not a variable determined by your imagination. The CTS-V is cheaper than the M5. The end. And yes the M5 was the benchmark... a benchmark used specifically to make the CTS-V better in every measurable way. Which it was. As proven by this video, which you don't seem to have watched.
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 10 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, it's a very fake time. If you think it isn't, then provide the source for that time. Here's the source for the 8:13 time: BMW M5 E60 8:13 Horst von Saurma Sport Auto (12/2004) Your turn, show me the source for that 7:52 time. Do it now. Any excuses you make for not providing it will reduce your already stunted credibility to zero. I shouldn't have to say this but obviously because you're "special" it needs to be said: The page you got that time from can be edited by anybody. And that's exactly what happened, somebody made up a time and plugged it in. But go ahead, prrove me wrong. Show me the source. And while you're at it, tell me more about how the E60 M5 is faster than the F10 M5 around the Nurburgring. Explain that to me. In detail. And yes, every measurable way. Did you not see the measured tests that proved it? It's in this video, and a couple others by Motor Trend on the same series of tests. I can't help it if you're determined to remain ignorant on this subject. I can't force you to learn. And finalhy, I like how your argument against the CTS-V has now been whittled down to "it's stupid shaped". Really, Shakespeare? It's stupid shaped? Wow.

Well the cts v has some of the biggest and best brakes on a car period and the motor is absolutely bulletproof one of the most reliable ever made, magnetic ride shocks put it far ahead of many others and reliability has been far superior than that bmw, in fact that bmw was one of the worst of bmws which already has the worst reputation for reliability, cts v all day long

Perhaps there is some bias here, perhaps there is not. However, the CTS-V is impressive, no doubts about that. Its one of the first American cars to ever rival Europe's best. BTW, GM has had OHC engines for a long, long, time (Pontiac used them in the 60s, Cadillac has had the Northstar for quite some time, Oldsmobile had the Quad4, which the Ecotec replaced), but the smaller pushrod design has proven to be more flexible for performance applications, in terms of packaging, and very reliable.

Why did they use a Manuel? They should have used one with the 7 speed SMG. People have tested the M5 going 0 to 60 in 3.9 sec. Plus the 5.0 V10 has made for the SMG.

+Fernando Lagunas The same can be said for the CTS-V. The auto is faster so if one of them is auto then they both should be and the book times on the auto CTS-V is 3.9, not so for the BMW, just because 'some people' have tested it at that...it's not the generally accepted value.

+Mental Viirus (MentalVirus) CTS-V uses fake power. Anyone can put a supercharger in a car and make fake Hp. The fact that this M5 does not have any turbocharged or supercharged speaks volumes of how amazing the M5 really is. And hell even Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear has said about the M5 “It’s a world of motoring perfection. If you want to take it on...don’t bother. It doesn’t matter what you’ve got. It doesn’t matter what you’ve ever driven. This is quicker, it’s faster, it’s MORE astonishing. You just can’t believe you’re in a big 4-door saloon because it goes and it feels and it SOUNDS like a Ferrari 430, and that’s about the best car I’ve ever driven. The steering, the brakes, the power. And this noise… The driving experience just dominates everything…. It’s an epic car, just brilliant.”

a much deserved win for the v. that car can go fast and look good while it's doing it. with the 30k you save, you could get the cts-v700 and pay about as much as the m5. if you install the parts yourself it's less. for roughly the same cost, you're getting a car which i personally believe looks better than the m5 and will blow its doors off instead of only being slightly faster like a normal v is. cadillac FTW!

I am about 90% certain that the CTS-V will be my next car. I own an AMG S class and I was looking at the Audi S5 yesterday and it is nice. The Cadillac dealership across the street had a couple of CTS-Vs and they are about the same price as the S5. However the CTS-V just destroys about everything with its horsepower and pricing, and I can carry 4 to 5 people in it comfortably. With regards to the M5, it is just a steal at $30-40K cheaper. And the CTS looks and sounds more badass than anything.

@L571J Or he just recently bought a broken CTS-V ;) Hehe. I think it's weird that the US-M5-Model comes with a 6 Speed manual. We in germany only have the 7-Speed SMG Drivetrain.

@heartboy86 Hp counts when the RPM reached to the max and it differs from one car to another, however if you want to talk about acceleration its all about the torque... and to produce so much torque is not an issue, the issue is how to put so much torque on the rear wheels and how to satbilize it for best performance!

@juscurious I agree. The average driver would end up in the woods or the livingroom of someones house. I have seen maybe one CTS-V on the road and 1 M5 in about 4-5 years. Not very common at all. I have seen a few C6 Z06 Corvettes in the last few days and went for a ride in one a few weeks ago and it was insane.

@hawksleyart01 And please update me on what other 500hp v10 engines get atleast the same MPG on the same weight or more? Could you do it better? Why would they win an award for the engine if it's that bad as you say it? A forced inducted engine will always be easier to maintain to higher MPG's and better emissions (hence the new M5 will have a v8 twin turbo, not because a bad 5.0 V10), that is sad though, as that isn't really for an m-car. But i'm sure it will do power. But nothing impressive

V > M. More power, better handling, magnetic ride control, (I personally like the interior better) Recaro seats, french stitching, AND $30,000 LESS! But in the M5's defense it does have that blue and white badge thing on the front, those little things are pretty expensive.

@nerses1: Not to mention. The Cadillac CTS-V is the only 500+hp sedan in the world, that comes with a 5 year or 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. And why shouldn't it? Its got a race bred and endurance tested engine.

Why did they test the M5 with manual gearbox and not the paddle gearbox? That would give much better acceleration times on the dragrace and also on the acceleration straights on the road course.

@bleezy650 I'd say that the caddy is better because, as you pointed out, it goes faster in a straight line and it is cheaper. However, it also has better gas mileage, more interior room (great for me as I am 6'5" tall), corners better, can be insured for less money, it is easer and cheaper to maintain, and it has tried-and true technology that is easy to find spare parts for.

@v8cool1 I think many people who own the M5 would disagree regarding comfort. The car was designed to be a daily driver as well as a supersedan. I agree that they are not for offroad, but they are sedans that carry 4-5 people just like any other sedan. In essence, they are super-sedans, emphasis on the sedan. They are to be comfortable, high-end luxury sedans with performance. That is their niche.

Q: Caddy's answer to the new M5? A: Swap LSA engine for LS9 for 638hp instead of 556hp. Same price as old motor. Death to M5. On top of that, there are hundreds of aftermarket tuners for RWD GM V8 cars. The LS motor can go all the way to 2500hp.

We should all remember some other things. Not everyone drives on a perfectly paved road course. Some people drive on rough highways, or heavy forbid GRAVEL. In tests concerning those conditions the CTSV outperformed the M5 by a prety fair margin.

@hawksleyart01 Yeah but that corvette was tuned to give more horsepower. If you give S65 AMG (I assume you mean the s-class since there is NO c-class available with a V12) to brabus, they can get close to 800 HP out of the same engine.
