I helped set up a JDM display last year that included a pristine FD, Mk IV Supra Turbo and R33 GT-R. I found a pristine 3000GT VR-4 at a car show but couldn’t find its owner. All the Z32s around here are clapped out or heavily modified, I think they were just a hair too popular for their own good and got seized upon by the 2 Fast 2 Furious crowd.

@3.2Carrera 8 жыл бұрын
+ravesilly I agree. I was in my 20's when these came out and the Supra was just a dream as for the possibility of ownership. A Corvette was around $38K at the time, even through it was long in the tooth it was still a prestige nameplate. It was a different league, but the Mustangs were the best buy then by far. I had new 90 GT ($13K) and a low mile SN95 Cobra ($14K) and I could easily afford those in high school and college.
@VaughnJogVlog
@VaughnJogVlog 8 жыл бұрын
+Vince L I was a bit younger, but another thing to consider is how few cars were priced over $40k in the mid-90s. You just about couldn't get an American car that expensive. A maxed out Corvette in '96 is close, and then the top Caddy and Lincoln. To compare these car prices to simple 2016 dollars doesn't tell the whole story. To bring up another point, in the 1983 film Risky Business, a 928 was the most expensive car for sell that year in the USA. Though they used one a little older in the film, think of it as Tom Cruise borrowing his dad's Veyron if there were a remake today.

They were right... Just not good business. If only safety standards weren't so strict, the value of lightweight and moderate power could be good for business if you keep the cost of materials and production down. Unfortunately, that just doesn't happen anymore here in the states. The only remaining enthusiast car for 'bargain pricing' is the new MX-5 coming soon and Mazda achieved the safety standards somehow. Maybe the other JDM automakers will follow and start making fun and affordable performance without sacrificing reliability. This video truly does resonate with me and confirms my JDM biased even though I love all brands in a sense.

The new Toyota Supra, the Subaru BRZ, The Subaru WRX Sti, The Nissan GTR, the Nissan 380z, the Lexus RCF, The Toyota GT86, the Suzuki Swift, the Daihatsu Copen, the Honda NSX and the Civic... they are all to sell now. @boboutelama5748
@boboutelama5748 5 жыл бұрын
@@christop997 This information was already debunked and is false. Let's analyse. The chassis was developed between the two brands. But they parted ways before the project was totally finished. Meaning, each plattform will at least have 60% of original crafting on it. Then engine was first designed by BMW, then fine tuned and reliability improved in toyota factory Japan. So it's a 60/40 for BMW. The externals, a sensible points on BMW engine failures, are all Toyota on the Supra (water pump, cooling, and so on). The gearbox is bought by a reputable manufacturer, you have the same into a lot of performance vehicles nowaday. It's not a BMW gearbox at all. So you are actually complaining that the Supra isn't a Toyota because they use bolts, nuts and lugs that aren't all from Toyota. Do you understand how wrong it is ? And look at Subaru. Their flat fours are not really known for keen realiability, but when used in a Toyota drivetrain, they made instantly a very reliable engine. It's not coincidence, it's Toyota's way of doing things. It will be the same with the Supra.

@Noble Khan Again...with low to mid 13s and a high 12s ET STOCK for the 3000GT VR4, there's no way in hell a stock 300ZX TT can take on one of those beasts, especially a '94-'99 model. Luckily the Z is a better car. It may not be as fast on a track but it's insanely more fun to drive, and fast enough to get you into trouble. It also had a better interior and higher quality all around, and imo made the others look like shit. It took all the good things out of the others and made it into a balanced package - it had the tech and GT feel of the VR4, the sports car handling of the FD3, and just plain out handled the Supra. You seem to only be focused on straight lines, which isn't the Z's strong point. I guess it's not the slowest, it did tend to outrun the FD3 after awhile. You're also not getting the gearing advantage (6 speed, better ratios), HP and ESPECIALLY TQ advantage, nor the insane AWD launch advantage the VR4 has. I've seen stock 1G VR4s beat Vipers just because of the launch. By the time the Z is at 20mph gaining traction, the VR4 is already car lengths ahead and going 35-45mph. The Z gains back some of those car lengths from a dig, but nowhere near all of them - with 283 lb.ft of TQ for a 3400-3550 lb vehicle, it's just not enough. As I showed you, it's not even a fair comparison. That's why my other Z twin turbo, a 1995, is modded and puts down over 500@whp. That's the other thing I don't get about you - do you even realize that if both are fully modded the Z easily has the advantage? After BPU stage, the Z starts making gains that the VR4 has to work harder for and it costs more money. You don't talk about any of the Z's good traits. Running a 13.71@103.96, my best personal time in my stock 1991 ZTT, isn't impressive in 2019...my buisness partners best of 13.09@104.02 IS impressive for 2019. The Supra TT and VR4 are the only two of the four (and the Skyline series) that runs relevant numbers stock. The Supra hits mid 13s and traps 106-109mph, and the VR4 hits high 12s/low-low mid 13s stock. The Z32 and FD3 were always high 13s all day. If you can find a mag article of a stock Z32 running mid 13s I'd love to see it. You have to ask yourself a serious question now - do you want to look like a fool and keep lying and referring back to two MotorWeek videos when the VR4 beat those times in it's 1994 test and in every magazine comparison after 1994 the VR4 ran better numbers, it's UNDENIABLE. I suggest you take the high road and either walk away and not respond with your tail between your legs, your usual MO, or respond like a man. Your choice kid.

What's hilarious is in 1994 MotorWeek got 0-60 in 4.9 and 1/4m of 13.5@103mph. The second gen 1994-1999 VR-4s are faster stock to stock than all the cars in this test besides the Supra which only passes well after highly illegal speeds. I have a bone stock 1999 VR-4, I run consistent 13.2-13.4@102-104mph. I have a bone stock 1990 300ZX Twin turbo, it runs 13 8-14.0s@100-103mph. MotorTrend did a test in 1995 called Virtual Velocity where they tested all 4 cars and the C4 Vette. Look it up online. I remember these two cars results because I own both: *Nissan 300ZX TT* 13.9@102.0mph *Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4* 13.5@101.7mph People didn't know how to launch the Mitsu.

Besides these entree choices I would also take an Integra, Prelude, Celica, Eclispe, Civic Si, MR2, NSX, SC400, XT, Legend, CRX, SVX, and 240SX. Did I miss anything? The 80’s May have the music but the 90’s set the standard for the Japanese auto industry. If the Japanese needed a boost, bring back these cars! I would gladly partake. Why not, everything else is making a comeback.

I wanted a twin turbo 300ZX from the day it first came out. It is also one reason I dreamed about visiting Japan since I was 5 years old. Years later I read the May 1998 Issue of Sport Compact Car. The car just looked so perfect.

+Skyline Fever well, i got a great shape 1996 convertible z for $2500 three years ago. all it needed was a timing belt and new front seals and general maintenance. now here i am 3 years later with $7500 into it and it's better than new. 19" polished rims, 2din carbon fiber with amazing head unit, a few other upgrades and a NOS system that puts in a 100 HP shot! That's about 310 HP to the ground in this N/A car and it's solid as a rock, very fun and with the top up or down it is a CLASSIC look. I've wanted one of these since the 90's and now I got her. She's a beauty and she's kinda fun to work on what with the timing belt and parts and upgraded seats and upgraded ... well, other stuff ... I'll probably keep her forever. I'm glad you have the car you always wanted. I think I would want to keep the 1995 RX-7 more because they are more rare. However, there is a huge advantage to the 300ZX. They tend to last longer than a turbocharged RX-7. I knew 2 people with turbocharged RX-7s, they both needed an engine rebuild after about 80,000 miles. However, they both said that driving an RX-7 was so enjoyable, that they felt engine rebuilding was worth it.

Chris Walker you are exactly right. The last VR-4 they tested went 0-60 in 4.9. Also, Dodge recorded several back to back 0-60 runs in 4.8-4.9seconds bone stock. Either the Motorweek driver of this particular episode had no clue how to launch an AWD car or that particular test car had a boost leak or an issue with the wastegates, who knows. Bottom line those numbers he got 0-60 and 1/4 mile were considerably slower than previous tests.

I would take any of those cars today. They are still very valuable in my eyes. Every one of them are icons.

The Z is just a beast... from day 1 it was clear the winner of the 4. #nissan #champ

But unfortunately an incredibly hideous car. Nissan builds some fugly ass cars. Cube, Versa, Sentra, juke.. They build such fantastic powetrains but hideous fucking cars. Except the GTR they did that one right.

9890jsp The 300zx is the best looking out of them, even listed amongst the top 100 beautiful cars in the world by Edmunds. Now, most cars from 2003 onwards were ugly, yes. And you're on crack if you think the GTR looks anything good. I'll take an R34 skyline GTR and older ones before I even consider an R35 GTR.

+9890jsp Wait what the heck is wrong with your eyes. I mean we all have our opinions but come on, I cannot see how the 300zx is ugly.

+FalkenWolf I'd say the FD RX7 is the best looking, and also better performing, the chassis still looks timeless even as of today.

Japanese 90's muscle car wars. Would love to have any one of those. Motorweek was wise to see their demise coming with this episode.
