IF you want to see something REALLY awesome, look up the video of how to remove stumps with a big BIG auger thing on the back of a tractor..it looks like a GIANT screw and just bores down and tears and shreds the hell out of any stump and rips it up....EFFIN KEWL.

@Mo no Depends the variety for sure. I'm sure these pumpkins would have tasted pretty bland, since they were not bred for flavor. Some pumpkin varieties are actually pretty good eating though. We grew a few varieties of sugar pumpkins at a farm I worked at. Those did taste pretty good baked, though its true that its difficult to compete with a good winter squash variety!

In Russia we do exactly opposite thing, we throw out seeds but flesh consume. Seed just grow up for a next year, if birds left some.

Its like helloween trick-or-threat shit. So we put some pumpkins around yard and hungry bear came at night and eat them. If you dont do this - bear eat your pig, goat, geese and childs, who accidenly go out to play with domestik wolwes. But if no joke. Farmers use long storage pumpkin like winter food for pigs and cattle. Pigs like seeds(they don't care), cows - don't like it. So seeds extract and use like food for geese and chickens, or throw away.

Dear Gloom Flower, Of course it is possible to collect the flesh. These varieties are not proper for human consumption at seed ripeness. We have customers in Australia and South Africa, who collected the flesh for animal nutrition. This mostly as water source, since the nutrient content is lower than the energy needed for transport. I think I remember seeing a machine that scoops up rocks and shakes off the dirt here on YT. But what's on top is only a fraction of the volume of rock as the heave and thaw from winter pushes up rocks.

They're not pie making pumpkins. They're a breed grown just for high seed counts. Probably makes a bad tasting pie. They grow different breeds of sweet pumpkins for pies. The fruit is left as a natural fertilizer for the next season. Which may or may not be pumpkins since farmers often rotate fields.

Amazing. I love pumpkin seeds in the shell lightly salted. High in Magnesium and fiber. My favorite brand is Mr. Big. I assumed they were mechanically scooped out while the flesh is used for canned pumpkin. Would need a lot of pumpkin acreage to pay for those machines. 🥰🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

I'm surprised that cattle are not grazed on the field after harvest, seems like such a waste of a food product with the flesh being discarded. I've read there is profit in utilizing a waste stream and making it a marketable product.

It’s a huge waste of water and energy. Pumpkins, even the dry types, are mostly water so this irrigated crop is just guzzling water that in the end does not end up as part of the food supply. Most of it will just evaporate.

That particular variety of pumpkin is rather tasteless. But I agree, what used to be a way of getting multiple uses from a harvest has changed much. Pumpkin seeds became a crazy and I doubt many realize what the production of their favorite snack entails. Just as many don't realize how much water is used to grow almonds.
