Phil is a hero, not in the glamorous way of being indestructible; he's human and part of the beauty of his songs, at least for me, is that given his sincerity they're extremely relatable and really give us that feeling of not being the only ones to feel that way, but with this guy it's just true. He's like an uncle that lived a big life and gives you some advice from time to time. I don't know where I'd be if it wasn't for this man's music. I hope he's doing well

Phil has always been open to pop culture (or more specifically not closed off to any culture, pop or not) and I think more "serious indie artists" should be that way. Phil, Genevieve and Adrian Orange (of Thanksgiving) stayed the night at my house after a show in Phoenix, AZ in 2005 and after looking at our mountain of "hip/artsy" DVDs and VHS tapes picked Mean Girls to watch (being one of the only titles that our non-hipster roommate had provided to the collection) and said it was one of his favorite movies. I'll never forget that, lol. Genevieve looked at him like he was crazy when he was cracking up during the movie. Great memories.

@0228christian2 жыл бұрын
@@waspswarm870 I was heavily involved in the Phoenix music scene at the time. My roommates/bandmates and I worked at various local venues and record shops so our house became a sort of a crash pad for the local touring musicians and artists that hit the DIY venues on their tours. Adrian had stayed at our house two or three times already before the tour with Phil and Genevieve so I don't even think we had to ask them if they wanted to stay the night at our place, it was just assumed. The next morning I took them to my favorite breakfast place and drove with them to their next show that night in Tucson where Adrian invited me to come on stage and play bass with them while Phil played drums for the whole set. He was workshopping the stuff that would eventually become the Adrian Orange & Her Band album so it was really amazing to hear and jam on the rough sketches of those tracks. Definitely one of the best weekends of my life.

Met the man himself after the Grand Rapids gig a few months ago. Easily the nicest guy I’ve ever met. And of course, he put on one of the coolest shows ever. He deserves all the praise he’ll ever get.

I tried talking to him at the merchtable after that show and ended up just getting really nervous and asking him how the card reader worked.
