I recommend any Microphones/Mt Eerie fan make the pilgrimage to Anacortes. It really is a magical place. His old bandmate in D+ has a record store called The Business, it's really cool. There used to be combination hostel/music venue there called the Department of Safety but it closed, so instead I'd suggest going during the summertime and camping. There is a campground at Mt. Eerie but I think the one at Deception Pass a few miles south is nicer. It really is a beautiful place to take a ferry out to the islands and whale watch and commune with nature.

I also thought this record was excellent but would disagree with your claim that it’s one of his more positive records thematically. All the joy and optimism reads as being the only thing Phil can hold onto in the context of his more sobering realizations. He sounds like he’s been enlightened to the bigger picture, but said enlightenment does not have anything good to say about the state of our world. He just is taking solace in these smaller moments. Banger though.

I think Phil was fishing in the same part of the collective concesiousness as Eyedea (Micheal Larsen) did back in 2001. I Spoke With a Fish and the song Birth of a Fish by Eyedea & Abilities are both super similar thematically, pretty cool.
