Mount Rainier // Attempting Emmons

It’s all about the weather. However, it seems that predicting the weather in the Northwest is a futile job. The forecast called for 3 days of decent weather but reality was very different. Our first day in Washington we skied Mount Adams because it was forecasted to be better weather the next day and we wanted to save the best for Rainier. The top of Adams was a hurricane of sulfuric slush in absolute whiteout. Then we woke up the next day to unexpected rain. The forecast called for a brilliant morning with clouds moving in late afternoon. Nope. Most of our time headed up Glacier Basin trail was spent in a drizzle. Just as we topped Steamboat Prow things kinda cleared locally although a thick lenticular cloud rested on the top 3rd of Rainier. We double checked our weather and reports said clouds would be moving in later in the day. We just didn’t know what to trust our eyes or the faceless forecasters.

Thank you for including this “failed” attempt. I have summited all of the Cascade majors by more than one route but I have been turned back more times than success trips. Watching your very enjoyable videos can create an inappropriate view of mountain adventures. It is worth documenting less successful days to keep expectations more reasonable. My first failed Rainier attempt ( in 1964) was much like yours - early season whiteout and rain on the trip to the prow. I finally made it as a winter climb in 1968

You guys had the same experience a lot of mountaineers are having up in the PNW this season, the weather has been wet and cloudy in the mountains to say the least. Really cools to this this approach on Rainier!

That "cloud" on the summit was a lenticular. They are not to be messed with and you guys were smart to avoid the 100mph winds and whiteout conditions on the summit that day. Nice turns were still had by all. Cheers.

As you know maritime weather can be fun.. changes quickly due close prox. to the Pac. Ocean, and tons of moisture. Heh.. My profile pix here.. on top of Adams b4 a ski descent. Come back for sunnier times. They exist, really. Great effort. Nice use of the ebike, nice tech tip.

Smart move, not getting up in the summit whiteout cloud. Our party was on top when similar conditions moved in. We got off the mountain at 4:AM the next day, just as a ranger search party was getting ready to come look for us. When you can't see 20 feet in front of you, you just might get lost..!

Woot!!! Welcome to WA's Mother Goddess - Mt. Takoma! Wicked weather on the volcanoes can suck and good times can turn to hideous bad times if your not ready for them...However, in proper MA fashion, you guys kick azz and altitude is ate like smoked salmon! Well done! Those skiing shots in Inter Glacier look sweet! Reminds me of good times there...Please do more in the PNW, the sun will shine more after July 4th, honest!

This has been the coolest wettest spring in the northwest I can remember. Nov thru Feb is constant rain clear weekends are rare but June thru Sept should be mostly sun with only a few weak storms, most weekend clear. We put up with gloomy winters because summers are normally wonderful, its very frustrating when rain or smoke makes the summer even shorter.

Yea, ive never see such a wet and cold spring, in over 40 years, here in Tacoma. Last 2 months we beat our average monthly rain total in the first 4 days, and it has been relentless. I think we have had 3 days, out of the last 100 days, without rain. Weather report, keeps saying "high pressure system dropping down to clear it out soon", but it never gets here.

Woohoo, my favorite channel to kick my butt to get out there and have some adventures! Thanks for all the inspirational videos. Do you have any plans to get some "revenge" on the bad weather conditions in Europe? Though my picture doesn't really give that impresseion, I've done a lot of cool tours in mostly the Alps which probably are right up your alley, including Blanc and Elbrus and there's also a lot of cool tours on the non-4000m mountains, some of them (not all) slightly less dependant on the weather and snow/glacier conditions. While we have a similar style (big days, unguided, self-organized, LNT), I am a few steps lower on the ladder than you guys, both in fitness and technical ability, so while most of these routes are/were at the top end of my ability (f.e. Matterhorn is on my list too, and is presumably the logical next step up for me), these routes should be comfortable for you. I'll spew a few of them to hopefully spark some interest in revisiting Europe ;). Despite the (french system) grades, these are not rock climbing routes but involve usually unroped scrambling. - Bamberger route (2+) on Triglav or 7 lakes traverse S-N (slovenia, no chairlifts on that mountain, kinda unique in the alps)... - Ehrwalder Sonnenspize (2+) possibly combined with 3 difficult via ferrata's (D/E) - Jubilaumsgrat (3-) on Zugspitze, - Watzman Ostwand (3+) / traverse (via verrata) (on my list, not done yet) or for a multiday or Wurl/Purl kind of outing, - Brenta traverse N-S (italy, lots of peaks and easy via ferrata) - Via Verzasca (switzerland) (swiss 4th to 6+ "hiking" grade) - Karwendel loop (austria, many variants including optional via ferrata's and scrambling routes to summits between grade 1 and 3+) I'll shut up now, but if you are planning more Alps stuff, feel free to email me and I can maybe be of aid in planning. Ok, so I don't do comments, but when I do, they get out of hand quickly it seems... Anyway, thanks again for taking the trouble to make videos out of your outings, it's not easy!

Great and semi-miseable adventure once again as always, the only thing that's missing is Kristoff's subtle pessimism. You guys have probably done it but Pfeifferhorn in Utah (near Salt Lake City) is a great peak to summit in late Fall or early Spring when all the sorroundings are snowy and alpine looking. Man, that was a couple gnarly days! The level of athleticism for all you guys, is insane! Excellent job, both days, and thanks for sharing the adventures. FYI, they make different ski waxes for different temps. Maybe it would be worth putting a kit together, and then in the parking lot, you could decide if you were going to take one stick of a certain color (for a certain temp) and a cork block, and then cork that in, when conditions get wet and sticky? Lastly, DANNY!!!!!! This is the second time I've seen you on a POS mountain bike (that Lefty Canondale POS from Christof's BDay ride, and now this!). My friend! For what it’s worth, there is a hack for the pedal dilemma. Requires a pedal wrench or equivalent however. Often times you can reface the threads bye threading pedal into the crank from the backside. Careful in, careful out, and a lot of times the threads are reformed the entirety of the through hole. Mount the pedal as per normal after refacing. Lube the pedal threads with whatever you have. Chapstick, Dermatone, etc.
