God bless, Steve. I’ve had two major running surgeries, including for my right Achilles tendon, which was eviscerated in an accident in 2017. Two physicians assured me I would never run again and that I would walk slowly, with a permanent limp. Only you really know you, however! It’s always You v You. No one else except family, friends and The Universe. I raced a 3:07 in the New York Marathon 14 months post-operation, on my 55th birthday. You won’t ever be the same. You will be different, and I expect, even better! You’re an inspiration. And paraphrasing Hannibal, You will find a way or make a way! Troy Eid, Morrison, CO.

Thanks for the update, Steven! This has been quite the ordeal for you. We're all thinking about you and pulling for ya as things get squared away. Can't wait for what's coming next -not only for the channel, but for what's on the other side of fixing the hip and getting back to running again! It's sooner than you think, my friend. Hang in there. Also, love the new look. I've been away for a while so I wasn't sure how new it was! And I think I know what's coming... good lighting and good mic. ;)

Oh man, the saga continues. My friend just had a hip replacement and I'm impressed with the process, I think that might be a better option too. Glad you are staying positive Steven!

I used to work for Stryker (hip replacement manufacturer) as an engineer. We made titanium/cobalt implants. The testing we did in the lab showed simulated 30 years of use calculating typical use for an average person (5000 steps, 2500 per hip). Those that were more active (walking 5+ miles) started having hip failures after 7-8 years. The couch potato's hip would last for 2 decades. All the numbers you're getting today are all estimates based on lab testing. During out tests, load was applied with 210-degrees vertical, 35-degree lateral movement submerged in synthetic synovial fluids. Vibration was also added to stimulate possible motorcycle riding, occupational exposure. No impact was ever simulated as patients were advised to limit high impact activities. Everything was great till problems started to show up with fragments breaking off (never in the lab). Ceramic implants longevity are estimates because the early stuff used in 80s in Europe has been redesigned many times and none of the new implants has been tested for 30 years. I think average person has nothing to worry about but ultra runner, oh boy. It's no different than vehicle wheel bearing and milage. Revision surgeries are no joke in elder population. Death rate during recovery is very high. I would really rethink running extreme milage, especially downhill on trails and switch to swimming or cycling after the replacement. I know you won't stop because that's how we are as athletes. As soon as we feel better, we go back to grinding. Who knows, maybe technology will allow for even better revisions down the road or trail.

Such good info!!! I had a THA in June in Vail at the Steadman Clinic. I’m a 51 yo female ex athlete but enjoy doing CrossFit. My doc said no running unless someone is chasing me. I wasn’t sure I believed that, but now I do! (I’m also a PT). Thanks so much!

I think the number one factor in your favor is your attitude! I'm sure not every day you think good thoughts about it, but you seem to have an overall positive attitude about the entire process. The PAO doesn't sound like something that would be enjoyable in the least so I'm hoping the MRI shows some arthritis! Thank you so much for the update!

Yeah I am going to fight for the hip replacement vs the PAO even if there isn’t arthritis. Thanks!

I'm having labral tear surgery on 11th September, and am booked for the PAO surgery the week after. However the recovery from PAO is huge, and I only have mild dysplasia and no pain at all (wouldn't even know there is anything wrong) so I am electing to not have the PAO as seen so many horror stories about recovery and the surgery, my physio has also advised against it as I'm bilateral I would essentially need the other side doing too. You can do a lot with strength training and he's confident I can keep my joints more stable with strength specific training after the labral tear surgery. Good luck with yours, hope it goes well!

Best of luck to you with your labral surgery! Yeah the recovery from the PAO seems daunting. Really hoping I can fight for and have a full hip replacement instead.

Fun that you were able to take the family even if you didn't make it to the top of Mount Sherman. Good luck with the surgery and figuring everything out!

Hi Steven, my wife and I are travelling from UK to volunteer at Leadville 100 - hopefully we’ll be at Registration, Outward Bound and Twin Lakes and a few other places over the weekend - so hopefully we’ll bump into you. We are planning a few days in Manitou Springs afterwards to do the Manitou Incline Trail (inspired by your videos). Good luck with the herding of the clinicians! Failure to have the right images for a productive medical appointment seems to be a global issue. Cian
