Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum Day Trip in Naples, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript:
The journey from Pompeii to Herculaneum is a scenic one with Mount Vesuvius to one side and the Bay of Naples to the other. It only took us 20 minutes to get there by train, so if you’re looking for a day trip, it doesn’t get much easier than this one. Just maybe don’t get off in the outskirts of town like we did, but more on that later.
Vesuvio's Express is a shuttle service that runs to the top of the volcano, so if you’re expecting a guided tour filled with lots of interesting facts, this isn’t it.
That being said, we were perfectly happy to tour the site on our own, and we couldn’t beat the price at 20 Euros per person.
The only problem we encountered was that the roads were completely iced over the further we went up the mountain, and at one point the bus just had to give up and let all the passengers off to go the rest of the way on foot.
Things got a little easier once we swapped icy paved roads for a dirt trail, though we also had snow to contend with, but we eventually reached the top. I would say one of the coolest things about hiking up to Mount Vesuvius was being able to see that it’s a volcano within a volcano, and while there was no bubbling lava visible to the eye, we could see steam rising from several vents.
Our next stop after lunch were the ruins of Herculaneum, an ancient Roman town that was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius. While Pompeii was covered in ash, Herculaneum was hit by the pyroclastic flow that followed the explosion of 79 AD, which also led to its preservation.
What at first glance appears to be a moat, is Herculaneum’s ancient shoreline. Here we were met with the aftermath of the explosion: a row of old boat houses, each of them filled with the skeleton remains of those who did not escape during the first day of the eruption.
This is part of our Travel in Italy video series showcasing Italian food, Italian culture and Italian cuisine.

i was thinking either SE Asia cos it's so cheap or Eastern Europe as it's close to the UK. so it'd be good to be close to home for a 1st trip.

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos And I advice you, that if you had enough time you should had visited di Imperial villa in Oplontis too... It is one if the two forgotten places (Oplontis and Stabiae) of the four cities destroyed by the Vesuvius in 79 AD, but it is one of the latest being excavated so it still contains almost intact all its beautiful frescos, while in Pompeii and Herculaneum best part of it were ripped off the walls in 1700 and transferred to National Archeological Musem in Naples. If I remember well, ticket for Archeological Sites is cumulative, and if you organize with precison your visit day, you can experience two or three sites (Herculaneum, Pompeii and Oplontis) and paying only one ticket once.

Pompei and Herculaneum were also the center of the "red light" districts in those days as were discovered by UK Scientists. Those frescoes does not only mean those are prominent people's houses but high class "entertainment" centers. The regular "entertainment" centers have stone beds and smaller rooms.

I've been to Vesuvius this January, taking my Ukranian roomate with me. Even though I'm from Caserta, I've never been there, neither in Pompei or Ercolano, but I have to thank you for going to Ercolano. Tourists only go to Pompei, and it's a pity Ercolano is always left out, since it doesn't receive the mass tourism Pompei receives, thus it's better kept, I beleive.

What do you look for to decide for one tour over the other? When we went to Thailand we used Viator but I have heard you can better deals there. But it just seems like so many people are offering tours it's hard to know which ones offer good tours. We were very happy with the tours we took overall though. Your videos were a huge help though so thanks!

Thank you! As a general rule of thumb you get a better price in person versus booking online from far away or even another city. The downside though, as you mentioned, is not knowing if it is a reputable operator. I would suggest looking up companies, tours and such on sites like tripadvisor where they've been reviewed and given ratings by users. Aside from that reading blogs posts about good experiences or having a recommendation from a friend or traveler is often a good bet.

Thanks a lot for the video! I will be visiting Napoli next month! I was wondering.. So in other words.. isn't it better to rent a car from Napoli to do both Vesuvius and Pompeii? It has been speculated that the skeletal remains are of those who managed to get out from the town (interior/centre) and were so very close to safety, but in the end could not escape out to sea. True or not, we will never know but makes it all the more tragic.

I see you arrived in Portici but you walked in the inferior road almost narrow sea and some alleys. If you had walked the main street you had seen the King of Naples Summer Palace in Portici. Check Google for Reggia di Portici. Today it is 14 of March for me writing the comment and two weeks ago we had the biggest snow since 1956. You got no lucky about it and about ice on the Vesuvius road. You can experience we in Naples are totally unprepared to snow and ice. Very different situation from Canada. 🤗
