My partners mountain biking now. Crap equipment was the biggest turn off in the beginning. Get a good fitting bike with wide bars and modern "slacker" geo, hire if you have to so they dont get a bad impression. The 2008 XC bike in my shed had narrow bars and was very steep, and while it was CF, light and was well tuned, once we started pointing downhill it put her off alot. A similar year giant trance/reign was night/day for her enjoyment as the bike felt that much safer for her even though it was heavier. "inspiring confidence" is critical for a beginner, as anything that makes it feel unstable is really disconcerting, and more modern bikes do that in spades.
