I'm in my mid 50s. And have taken my time on the bike to learn your figure 8 drills and ratcheting, usually at a local park. I felt a bit subconscious at first, but I'm determined to learn to track stand. It's been going well. I get a few looks as Roadies zoom by and interestingly one of acknowledgement that she understood I was learning bike control. After a few short weeks I feel so much more confident on the bike. Thanks Roxy! I really like the complete package approach instead of just the "cool" parts.

I’m still working on tracks stands. Not up to Roxy level yet, but it’s so great to feel the bits of progress. Fun in itself, but so rewarding in how the practice translates to trail safety and fun. Very slow speed balance + Pre-rehearsed bail/dismount skills = improved technical switchback relaxation, success, and fun! Next time you get a look from a roadie, give them that knowing smile back thinking about all the fun they’re missing! 😏 Seriously though, thanks for posting about feeling self-conscious. It does take energy to just deal with that aspect of the process. It’s hard sometimes.

I love that nature repeats itself everywhere. I love being able to use the same formula for accomplishing growth of any kind. If you just go go go at anything, you'll eventually learn wrong, konk out, and fail to grow. I always think of training more like telling my body and mind how I want them to grow: give them guidance through proper practice (the conversation), give them the nutrition they need to make X structure or Y chemical (nurturing), and then give them time to grow into what I've asked (the payoff!). Flexibility, strength, skills, mind...anything.

Ive ridden and raced dirtbikes for most of a lifetime, and always ridden mt bike but never really learned the techniques on mt bikes, fairly different than on a dirtbike. Now at 66 Ive got 2 new mt bikes, and am taking the time to learn techniques. Its pretty fun really. I also ride 100 to 160 miles a week on roadbikes, good for aerobics and its a social thing also.

I'm in the age group you mentioned, and just got my first MTB (eMTB) and am eager to learn not how to do extreme technical stuff like so many other channels show, but the basics of some of the maneuvers so I can handle them when I encounter those conditions on "cross-country/trail" rides. I’ve been mountain biking for 39 years now. I’m 64. I still get a kick out of learning new techniques. Many sports develop new techniques because equipment changes. Like alpine skiing. Other sports like Nordic skiing developed new and better techniques which are really fun to learn and try and master. I do like a good climb but living in Whistler I also get really challenging descents. I may walk some things out of self preservation because injuries take longer to heal now. But having trails that I haven’t ridden clean yet really gets me going. I’ll always have a goal to finally ride that trail or section.

Hi Roxy, as always awesome content. I'm 57 and started riding MTB's 3 years ago, I found your KZbin channel about 10 months ago and have been following you ever since. The thing I love about your teaching is the simple and clear way that you explain things. Your teaching just works for me, so much so that I just felt so much more confident and at ease on a single track I rode the other day that I have always been a little uneasy riding in the past. Regress to the basics and get them right first.

I am 74 years old and have been cycling for most of my life. Developing and maintaining flexibility is a major factor especially as we age. Especially for mountain biking because we have to be able to constantly go with the flow of the bike and terrain. It’s not a matter of if you fall or crash but when you do being flexible helps in those awkward situations.

Hi Simon, most of the course is different, as I include precise and step-by-step „how and what to practice“ sessions and they are in a sensible order. Also, i have some know-how that I will not publish on KZbin ☺️ that will bring you from „knowing“ into „performing“ the skills. Because knowledge is only powerful if we know how to APPLY it. As a personal trainer you’ll also know that of course some of the knowledge will not be available there though, as it needs to be tailored to the needs of the individual ☺️ That’s what I provide in the optional one-on-one-coaching. You’ll find it on www.Roxybike-Coaching.com

Good and sensible video (as always). I’m 64 and one of those, “oh I find with working hard on trails”. BUT, your video on front wheel lifts really improved my cycling in all the technical gnarl of Philadelphia’s Wissahickon trails (USA). I worked on manuals but got nowhere, so decided to teach myself how to skateboard instead!!!! I can’t afford a “teacher” but I will go back to manuals,….. or maybe bunnyhops? One of my problems is I don’t know which I should work on first (manuals or bunnyhops). I am a subscriber and watch some of your stuff almost every night.

Hi Scoot - thank you for your comment. In my experience fear only creeps in as a RESULT of one of these 5 pillars missing or being overseen. In my work as a mental trainer and psychological counselor I do not observe that over 50 riders are more fearful per se - I just see that they become less risk-taking, which however is a SMART thing to do - especially if the strength is not there to rescue an almost crash.

I'm not quite 50 yet (47), and this is all good advice, but my favourite quote that I will take away from this video is that "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear", because this is so true: my bike is "distinctive" which starts many conversations, this lead to me asking questions and learning from the answers... So I just bought a mountain bike ( Cannondale Trail 5) to ride trails around Phoenix. I’m 80, but in pretty good shape for my age. On my first excursion, however, on a rocky uphill trail, I clipped a pedal or caught the bottom bracket housing on a rock, and over I tumbled! Right in front of several hikers. Very embarrassed and skinned up a little. At first I thought I just need to stick to smooth trails ( and I still think that), but your videos have given me some knowledge that I need some SKILLS! @@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire As a 61 year old who raced XC for 20 years I can share that it's the mentality that is very difficult to change. Aging is difficult because we've never done it before. As you know there are muscle imbalances that increase as we lose flexibility and strength, which is new. Most coaches advocate intensity training to keep the VO2 max up, which is really just more of the same for ex-XC riders. It's good for the ego but very high risk.

@@steveloyd2723 I totally agree. Every habit is hard to change ☺️☺️ …mentality is actually an accumulation of our habits, which are directed by our thoughts. The problem is: As long as the result pleases people, people love the rule that if we keep doing what we’ve always been doing, we’ll keep getting the same results we’ve been getting. BUT - add “aging” to the equation and doing the same does not continue to bring the same results physically. Because one part of the equation = our body has changed. Now, we can either stick to what we’ve been doing and add force (intensity) - OR we change our mindset. ☺️ In my experience as a coach of all levels, adding force only works well for a while…

Thanks Martin - so great to hear you’re open! …although I have to say, that one day jump clinics seldom bring REAL progress. (Unless the clinic was prepared for with many months of working on the FUNdamentals)… Therefore, your fear of crashing in that specific occasion was maybe not a mindset issue, but more self-preservation, because your body felt that jumping is not something we learn in one day? If you’d like to work on your FUNdamentals (in a safe space over time) then do check out my course for it. roxybike.podia.com/mtb-fundamentals-mini-course Because motor learning takes PRACTICE over an extended period of time… ☺️☺️

@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Thanks! I said on woods trails, though. No matter one's competence level, the danger is inherent. When whipping through trees on uneven surfaces plus the occasional debris, enjoying pushing the limits, the bike gets knocked around and we hope to recover when it does but the time always comes... Same situation with dirt bikes but the speeds are greater as is the mass of the bike. Though dirt bikes are much more planted and stable than mountain bikes. One should never dismiss the element of danger that accompanies riding. 💪☮️

The premise is correct, but it glosses over the primary problem for older riders. When you are young you can practice something 1,000 times in a row for 4 hours, get a good night's sleep, and tomorrow you are as good as new to start all over again with the full benefit of yesterday's gains. When you get older, regardless of how fit, you are allotted far less attempts. Most will lean toward suffering less than when they were young, but you have to accept suffering more.

Or focusing on quality over quantity 😇 One possibility to do this is needing less repetitions, because you have a professional coach by your side, who allows you to do “the right reps” - and not “mindless reps”. I have many older riders in my coaching (online and real life) and they learn skills with me in only a few weeks after having struggled with them for years 😍

@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire No doubt your coaching would be invaluable for many foundation skills. But some things, like doing a hop 180, or a 360 endo, simply require the reps. You just have to ice the overuse injuries (up to a point) and push on.

I have absolutely no core strength du to being the most lazy mediocre rider in the world... but ... If I can do downhill at 503, Maybe you can too... I'm not afraid of being pathetic.. In fact it's a bonus being able to sometimes let someone else shine when they have always been the worst in a group.. (I actually like being at the back to catch stragglers or gear failures). Life isn't a race.. You don't have to be 1st... you just have to enjoy what your doing... If your happy with flat tracks.. do flat tracks... but don't turn down a chance to go a little outside your comfort/skill level every now and then. And don't forget to take a video so you've got something to look back at... especially if you get better... I'm just hoping to give others something to laugh at. q8}

Left the house for a few hours and came back to an exploded innertube.All in all it seems to be a good bike. Have not ridden it yet though so that's the max of my knowledge.
