This goat lives in the Olympics, which have no rock salt so salt is hard for them to find. Mountain goats aren't native to the Olympics. I can't remember why but they were introduced there in the early 1900s. However they are native to the nearby Cascade mountains, which DO have rock salt. Since mountain goats in the Olympics get very little salt naturally, they are much more bold and/or aggressive toward humans in the Olympics than in the Cascades. Generally goats in the Cascades keep to themselves. Thankfully a project has been underway to remove the goats from the Olympics. A few goats remain since the part of the Olympics they live in is too rugged and remote to reach with the equipment needed

For people who don’t know, not only are billy goats extremely territorial and aggressive. But they’re also incredibly strong and unless you know how to handle them, they could hurt/kill a large grown man. They’re no joke. So if this every happens to you, let the goat do his thing and while they’re licking, look for a way to get somewhere safe in case it turns aggressive. The goat might be licking you innocently, then the next second charging you full speed, repeatedly. Cute as they may seem, they’re very dangerous animals especially for women, children, the elderly, etc.

For mountain goats, gravity isn't a law, it's more like...a guideline. Mountain goat hooves facilitate fancy footwork. Just as human rock climbers use their fingers to maneuver their way up a wall, mountain goat hooves have two toes that spread and allow them to grab onto small rocky features. This helps goats maintain their balance while roaming the mountains. Furthermore, the base of each toe is covered in a rough pad that creates a surface akin to climbing shoes. Studies have focused on their ability to propel itself up cliffsides, and biologists attribute the skill to strong hindlimbs and specialized neck and shoulder muscles. While these mountain goats aren't native to the Olympic Peninsula, a cool creature that IS native to the Olympic Peninsula is the endemic Olympic marmot. Marmots are a type of squirrel, and Olympic marmots are about the size of a domestic cat, typically weighing about 8 kg (18 pounds) in summer. A colony may contain as few as one marmot family or multiple families with up to 40! Olympic marmots are very sociable animals which often engage in play fighting and vocalize four different whistles to communicate.

The national parks had a problem with this a while back cause the goats were becoming aggressive with visitors. They tranquilized a bunch and had them airlifted further away from the highly-traveled areas. Normally they get salt from rocks up high on the mountains but when they found out we have salt on our skin they would climb on top of people to get the salt. Mind you these are not small animals by any means and their hooves can be quite sharp too.

Mmmmmmn salty goodness. You gave the goat life!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ you're my hero!
Here's some more info about mountain goats: They are native to the Rockies of Colorado, Montana, and Idaho, the Cascades, and up to southern Alaska. Canada's British Columbia contains half of the total mountain goat population. This is the Olympic Peninsula, which they were introduced to in the 1920s. They're doing this to lick salt, as the Olympic Mountains lacks natural salt licks unlike the Cascades. It was chosen to eradicate the Olympic population and relocate them to the Cascades after aggressive encounters, including one where a hiker was killed in 2010, though this process has been slow because of the fact they're found at such high altitudes. Despite their name, they're not in the Capra genus, which is the genus that contains all goats. Thus, they are not true goats. Instead, they're the only living ones in the genus Oreamnos! In the high-altitude environments, sometimes above 13,000 ft, they are the largest mammal! Mountain goats are about three and a half feet tall at the shoulder, and weigh between 150 and 220 pounds. Their coats help them to withstand winter temperatures as low as −46 C (−51 F) and winds of up to 160 kilometers per hour (99 mph)! Human attacks are rare, but they can be quite aggressive towards each other. When they're grouped together, they display, charge, and engage in mini-duels four or five times per hour.

a mountain goat could fuck you up man, those things are huge. Human strenth is in endurance and uintelligence, and but when there is a strong animal like a mountain goat and we dont have a weapon, we're helpless

“The Roman army required salt for its soldiers and for its horses and livestock. At times soldiers were even paid in salt, which was the origin of the word salary and the expression “worth his salt” or “earning his salt.” In fact, the Latin word sal became the French word solde, meaning pay, which is the origin of the word, soldier.” ― Mark Kurlansky, Salt: A World History
