Cutting the Mountain House meals down with rice or beans is a great idea. I would probably add some Uncle Ben's parboiled rice packets for each Mountain House meal since you can just pour it right in and add water. I believe Uncle Ben's rice is pretty cheap so it'll help add calories and meals for not much extra. You can turn a $10 Mountain House Meal for one person and add $1 of rice and turn it into a meal for two people for $11.

Mr2 Reviews If you’re keep MHM as emergency food, that’s a good idea. But they’re kinda expensive for that. I’d rather keep canned food for emergencies. MHM are great for lightweight hiking and bugout bags.

There’s very little to none of nutrition in white rice…it may fill your stomach but doesn’t feed your body….UNLESS. It’s Enriched rice…they that’s done with flour and ready to eat cereals…where a vitamin pack is dissolved in liquid and sprayed on the void stuff. In which case,,no one with gluten sensitivities can consume…because a gluten flour is used to make a sprayable stick to the food enrichment. Great video as always! Huge MH fan, here. Back in 2009 during a permanent layoff, I survived on my MH stash for 6-8 weeks, restricting myself to one meal a day. Glad I saw the layoff coming months in advance and stocked up! Listen to your instincts, folks. I found that I enjoyed the meals more if I used a little less water than recommended, usually 14 oz vs 16oz. I like more flavor and don't care for watery food.
@LastLineOfDefense5 жыл бұрын
Yup, and can stretch those meals out way far if you add some staple food like rice or beans to the meals.

I agree with your recommendation of extending the Mountain House meals with other food items such as rice, veggies, and peppers etc. I have used Mountain House for many years and also find it far to salty for the average human. When I use Mountain House as well as other brands I add lots of water as well as other food item to extend the meal to 5 or 6 servings thereby lowering the salt content per serving. If you bring the right “no salt” spices you can turn the meals into anything you desire. Great video, thanks 👍👍👍👍👍

Mountain house is really tasty. Be careful with some of the cleaner more healthy freeze dried meals. They tend to be bland so you may want to keep some seasoning for them. Get as much variety as you can. I keep lots of freeze dried food of all different brands. I poach from what I keep on hand to go backpacking and if I like it I replace it in my stored food and so on. Mountain house has been my favorite overall. But there is a catch. It will make it hard to have bowel movements. I try and drink 5 liters of water backpacking and have mountain house for breakfast and dinner and lunch I have high fiber bread with tuna. Even so I hardly ever need to take a #2. So if you plan on eating this as your go to during an emergency day after day I would also get the variety pack of freeze dried veggies. And keep things to add to your meals. Mountain house is light on veggies and fiber and you need lots of water to drink. Hope this helps.
@basher22095 жыл бұрын
Thomas Ryan That is very helpful! Thank you for taking the time to explain that. I had kind of assumed but I’m glad to hear that’s what is needed.
John daniel. Freeze dried food doesnt go bad. Their 30 year guarentee is not scam as they have had many test runs s with their food over 30 years. The 30 years Is the longest trial they have had and that is taste guarentee. Those things really never go bad short of the container being punctured. As far as the conspiracy theory you hold, what solid evidence do you have that all of the companies listed are mormon. Secondly, what do you have against mormons? I'm not religious but you come off as some atheist douchebag. While I agree that a personal garden and livestock would be much better, not all of us can afford that and freeze drying is a very expensive process. Also what you stated is false about mountain house. They are from Oregon and they produce their products domestically. I cant tell you how much they're marked up, but I can say they are far better quality than any other brand I've tried and they are worth their weight in gold for a sort of disaster.

Great video! Brave guy! In a crisis you probably wouldn't be eating 3 MH meals a day, you'd want to make your good, reasonably nutritious stuff last as long as possible. You could probably supplement your diet with fresh foraged items and maybe some other basic foods like oats/pasta/rice/canned bread etc. That way you'd still be eating pretty well, and not be consuming lethal amounts of salt/sodium. Being a prepper is a very comforting feeling, knowing that you (probably) will be able to survive most events . Makes me feel secure!

I've eaten Mountain House for backpacking but always wondered if it would work as a more long term sustainable food regiment. The weight savings for me is a plus. I've been wanting to put together a portable food storage cache to supplement the stored canned food that I have. Was thinking about using one of my big plastic water resistant husky tool bins with wheels and filling it with Mountain House meals and other light weight shelf stable food items. This way I'd have maybe a 50lb wheeled food bin ready to go for any reason.

I really dig it. I eat all 2.5 servings by myself no problem!!! most of the time for backpacking food I go for just regular stuff that comes in a bag and you add water and heat, many good soups, mashed potatoes ,noodle cups ect and they are cheap AF as opposed to these freeze dried "packpacker" specific type meals.and honestly they tend to taste better in my opinion. but yeah there are some good MH meals apparently, Ill have to try a few more after watching this.

It is my understanding that the reason why they're so salty is because they're meals intended for Backpackers. Backpacking all day you're working up a sweat and you got to have your electrolytes replenished etc. In a grid down shtf scenario you're going to need to replenish your electrolytes when your rucking from one FEMA camp to the next.

I would not worry about the sodium intake, unless you had a health condition that prohibits your sodium intake. I would not want to survive on these for several years. But I think for short periods of time, with lots of hydration they are one of the best choices for ready to eat food that requires minimal prep., and tastes pretty good. And like you mentioned in a survival or backpacking type of scenario, with extra exertion the sodium is actually needed. I totally agree in a survival situation mixing these ready to go meals with staples like beans and rice will help your food supplies to go farther and still be fairly tasty, satisfying, and healthy. Thanks for sharing this test with us!

Just a suggestion for future similar type videos you may post (watching this 12/2021 so who knows how many videos like this you have done since this one) -- the nutrition info on the back of the package + instructions could have been included as just a few seconds of video vs a "still' but that info would be valuable. Shows prep instructions, possibly other related info, and you could be talking during that brief nutrition info segment so won't add much (if anything) to length of video. Of course I could just go to the MH website and find the info myself, but again, just as a suggestion I think including the package info as a picture would help some people (like myself). For others, it might be seen as "fluff" but can't be much different from watching a dog sampling spilled package ingredients. Also, while you did mention occasionally that the package was for more than one person the few times I got to see the back of the package, I was "impressed" by how many calories there were. 2-3 servings adds up unless you really ARE out hiking all day and thus burning up calories. I'm wondering if you noticed any weight changes during this 7-day event.

In Mass (Where I grew up) we had thanksgiving subs. Turkey,stuffing,gravy and cranberry sauce. I used to eat them all the time. Big fan of turkey dinner! 👍🏼😊

If you do chickens, do a review of everything. I’d be interested to see how you build the coup and everything.

I thought it was WICKED cool. I think I'd have gotten tired of eating out of a pouch within a couple of days and I wonder if you'll EVER want to eat Mountain House meals again😊. You didn't try the apple crisp which is really good but I can't seem to find anymore ...ANYWHERE!! Its not considered a meal either, however I'd easily replace it for one anytime. Keep the videos coming!

Sounds like packets of hot sauce would be a nice addition. Wendy’s had chilly sauce in packets also most decent gas stations that sell hot food have tapatio or cholula hot sauce packets

You know they make glue from rice... Eat more vegetables and solid color foods. No white foods.

I did this when I backpacked Isle Royale. It’s not bad, I especially liked the breakfast meals. Seems like the breakfast skillet was the best.

I've been saving up Mountain House #10 cans and pouches for years now... But have yet to even try any. I figure that if I ever need them, they will taste great lol. It's better than starving! I'll keep packing these away.

Hi, Great video. I am trying out some of these (making my mistakes along the way). My first mistake was buying Wise foods (I did not realize that a lot of them do not contain the meats) like teriyaki is not chicken teriyaki. FYI I am in Tn, what state are you in?

You don't need boiling water to eat Mountain House freeze dried meals. They taste 1000 percent better when rehydrated with boiling water, but it isn't necessary. For the eggs, I drain any water out of the bag before eating. Lastly, you can cut the top of the bag off when its ready so you don't have to have a long spoon. The elevated sodium in the meals helps when you are out in the field burning calories, so if you are lethargic and eating Mountain House, it may not be the healthiest, but they are the best tasting of any freeze dried meal. For the chicken breasts with mashed potatoes, take the chicken breasts and break them up into pieces before you rehydrate them. That way all you have to do is add the mashed potatoes to the patties and eat out of the pouch. I love the granola and blueberries, but with hot water.

Great video! Definitely want to try other ones. I've only tried the chicken fried rice which wasn't bad, but like u said u have to add less water than recommended.
