There are numerous bobcats in Durango, Ia. It's right on the Mississippi river, way up on a tall bed of forest & rocks. My sis lived clear up on the bluff, just north of Dubuque. She warned me about the bobcats & when I heard it the first time, I was ready to get in my truck and drive home. It's a horrible, bloodcurdling noise. I stayed for two weeks & every night became Screech central. The bluff is beautiful, but I am not going back.

Growing up near a lot of farms, hearing this as the sun goes down as I worked on the field made the hair on the back of my neck rise higher than it has ever been before. No other sound has scared me as much as the cry from a mountain lion. But I am so damn lucky to have been able to hear it with my own two ears. Such a cool animal, if not also one of the scariest things out there.

I’ve heard something very similar to this a couple times alone in the mountains in the pitch dark. It was so dark once I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face. You don’t wake up slowly when that happens, you go from 0 to 100 in 3 seconds. Heart thumping stuff. The good news is they never bothered me. They quit talking after a few minutes and when I woke up in the morning all of my pieces and parts were still attached.

Around 1979, my parents and 6-year-old twin sister arrived home late at night in southern Indiana. We lived way out in the country and there was no light (not even a porch light). My dad went to pull his house keys out of his pocket and proceeded to examine the set to pick out the house key. At that point, we were relying on night vision so this took several seconds. It was at this moment I heard that scream. My dad dropped the keys on the ground in a panic and the family cowered in fear bending down to search for the keys for what seemed like an eternity. While it sounded like a screaming woman, the sheer volume made us realize this was a mountain lion. I remember that like it was yesterday. It took me a week before I went out into that woods again - but there was no sign anything had been back there. That was probably the most scared I had ever been in my life.

This brings back memories. We were camping with my family in Yosemite. My young daughter started to vomit in the middle of the night. My wife asked me to go back to the car from our campsite (About 1/4 mile ) to get some ginger ale and meds to calm her stomach. As I walked through the campsite to the car and back all I could hear were growling black bears, very very close. Luckily afterwards I also had and took some anti diarrhea meds that I desperately needed.

My friend Brian lived up in the Angeles National Forest in So Cal. I took my young daughter hiking to the first camp before Mt. Wilson. My friend met me after dark. We sat around talking, while my daughter slept. We were trying to enjoy the nice evening in the forest. Some Boy Scouts had arrived after my daughter and I, and set up camp. They were really loud, kind of messing up the peacefulness, even after 9pm. Brian said, "check this out" He then let out a blood curdling scream, followed by a couple more. The campground fell eerily silent. Peace at last. It was really similar to that lion scream. Brian had it down. Good memory.

It’s not like it’s just a really startling sound either. Like that is genuinely a killing machine that can take your life in the most agonizing and sometimes slow deaths. Like there is virtually no difference between a monster and what you’re actually hearing lol.

I appreciate mountain lions and when you hear something like this in the wild, it is both awesomely frightening and unforgettable. I took a break from school to work at a remote summer camp that had a domesticated female lion in captivity as part of their science program. One of my most enjoyable duties each day was to set out of fresh food and water and clean out her large outdoor enclosures. Also each evening I would either hike or ride an atv up to her area of the property and prepare her food for the next day. One winter evening when I arrived alone at the nature center, now in pitch black darkness, I turned off my atv motor and lights and immediately felt goosebumps and the hair on my skin standing up. I froze on the edge of my seat and the very next instant the pitch black darkness exploded with the electrifying loud wailings and screams of a mountain lion. I immediately powered on and scrambled out of there, returning at daybreak to finish caring for her and to check the perimeter for tracks. I figured it was a wild boyfriend who had come around to pay her a nocturnal visit. This remains for me an unforgettable experience that I value highly and that helped age me prematurely.

Years back in my childhood home in eastern San Diego county, we were sitting outside around 500 feet from the house looking at the stars when a mountain lion screamed similar to this but much closer. We ran back to the house. Next day, we called the local fish and game and asked them about it. They confirmed that the mountain lion had a tracker and was essentially in equal distance from us as we were from the house. If that thing wanted to attack, we'd have been gone for sure.

I remember when I was 14 deer hunting, I walked pretty far into the woods and did not pay attention to time. The woods change at night, things get weird and disoriented. Walking up on a rabbit or deer will startle you, but I heard that dang sound. I admit, it scared me, I put my back to a big tree looking for one I could climb. maybe an old deer stand or something, I put the light facing out and fired two shots into the tree tops hoping the gun fire and falling debris would scare it. I never heard it again and it took me 3 hours to get home. Sound travels very clear at night.

I was only about 100 feet away from a mountain lion that crossed the rural road that my late great mother and I lived on in northern Minnesota. It just kept trotting along as if it never noticed me. They are so amazingly keen I bet it knew exactly where I was long before. So I about a 10 minute walk past where it had crossed the road and on my way back home and exactly where the mountain lion had passed was a 20 dollar bill! That was on a rural country road too and no major passing of pedestrians. I just told an Ojibwe man, a healer, and he just smiled the biggest smile. I quietly took it as a message to get some pepper spray from a local Army surplus store and almost exactly how much it cost. What makes a mountain lion cry out like that? I never heard the mountain lion make any sounds and it's tracks were in the snow about 200 feet from our front door and I could tell it had perched in the low branches in the pine forest we lived in. I was alert and know they can be dangerous. I've been around bobcats but they are so keen they know you are there long before. I heard bobcat calls and they are really way out. It's like they do a whole array of sounds growls, screams, and low kind of vocal sounds even more scarier than this mountain lion. I wonder if the guy with the gun had wounded it or started shooting everywhere and frightened it.

Randycandy years ago my cousin and I decided to walk to a gas station, he lives in the mountains and the gas station is 7 miles away. Well we decided to walk in the middle of the night. And we heard this exact same noise off in the distance. Of course we heard it half way through our journey. One of the hard decisions of my life, turn around and run back home toward the noise. Or run to the gas station and call for a ride lol. Another interesting thing is a few weeks later we decided to walk again. Well about a mile down the road there is 4 old grave stones dating back to the 1700's well I swear we heard someone screaming help. Rumor has it that native Americans came through and slaughtered the folks that lived there. Needless to say we both have our licenses now so we don't walk anymore.

Shot a buck one night and when I was dragging him out it was like 2 hours after sun down I heard some purring behind me. Very loudly and I got the most eerie feeling. I have been hunting all my life and been in the woods many times after dark with and without a firearm and I've never been spooked like this. I waa bowhunting that day and was afraid to carry my pistol even on my own land since I didn't have my carry permit yet and just didn't want any bullshit from game wardens etc. I heard the noise and knew it was way too loud to be a bob cat. When I would start to move I can faintly hear something behind me moving and when is stop and turn around it would stop. I knew then it was stalking me. I left the buck right there and put my bow in the sling on my bag took one arrow with a broadhead on in one hand and my Gerber knife in the other and walked slowly and confidently out while talking to myself loudly. Right before I crossed the fence back into my property from the WMA I was on I used my headlamp one last time to try and see it. At that point I saw the eyes about 100 yards away and as soon as I shined my light on it it crouched back down into some thickets and I was like omg... I walked damn near backwards the rest of the way until I got to my truck. I went back the next morning with my mini .30 and my dad went with me. We found the paw pad prints and the weirdest thing was the buck had not even been touched... the cougar was hunting my ass lol.. I carry a pistol now even when I rifle hunt but especially during bow and blackpowder seasons. If that ever happens again I will cling a tree an wait while I call someone or fire some shots and hopefully spook it off. I know they are amazing climbers but if I was in a tree with my pistol and one decided to climb up after me it would be an easy defensive position to fire from..

@@blerpaderpmerp7468 ....Can't tell if you're being serious or sarcastic. Mountain lions are not docile my friend lol. They are more terrifying than a bear because they silently stalk you, and aren't usually scared away by erratic behaviour of waving your arms or yelling loudly, like a bear might be. Cats of all kinds are some of the most ruthless hunters, even little domestic cats are violent hunters... big cats are that x10

@@blerpaderpmerp7468 - and jaguars are pretty docile, too. The only time you have to worry about mountain lions or jaguars is when they're out hunting. And you're running. That's a prey trigger. And, unless you piss one off, you are not _usually_ their prey.

@@cinaDAP.zionistASIA I'm sure you've heard that even a dog can keep a bear that's 10x bigger from attacking it's injured owner just by posturing & growling. That's because in the animal world the growling & other vocalizations are to posture to other predators specifically to make them think twice ... I've heard stories of dogs keeping mountain lions from attacking as well just by turning & looking in the direction of where they know the lion is coming from. Animals know how to communicate with each other. It's us humans that don't know what we're doing most of the time. And the people who think they know it all are the ones that inevitably wind up becoming lunch for some predator they thought they knew how to avoid because they got cocky. OP is probably right that a bear, hearing this scream would probably choose to avoid the confrontation.

Well, I dunno. How about a moonless, starless night, after just realizing you forgot your flashlight; you're trying to get back to your truck about a mile away in extremely mountainous country with no cell signal and also your phone battery died about a half hour ago; you can't even see any game trails for all the darkness; you're in thick scrub oak that you have to noisily trip and break a trail through while limping on a knee that hurts like hell because, as it turns out, you have a torn meniscus. The good news is that you're carrying a rifle. The final bad news is that it's a bolt action and the screams you're hearing behind you are from not one but two cougars.
