Granddaddy Basin | High Uintas Wilderness, Utah

Been to Grandaddy Basin many times. Last time I went to Fern Lake, I had it all to myself. Camped and fished at Grandaddy, Lodgepole, Mohawk, Betsy, Pine Island Lakes. First time I saw the old Hathenbruk cabin near Lodgepole Lake, it still had a roof (about 1978). The fishing has always been good, and despite its popularity, I’ve always enjoyed my visits to the Basin.

All of the birds! I know they are Grey Jays, but I know them as Camp Robbers! One time when we were in the Cascades one of those little bastards..uh hum.. Grey Jays, flew down and stole a piece of bacon right out of our pan! I've felt like they have owed me ever since!

I went up there with Jessie from HYOH-WU. We didn't go up that way, we came across the divide. The views were amazing, hopefully the video will do it a little bit of justice.

I'm a huge tenkara addict, my favorite thing is small creeks and lakes. I've never camped since i was young, but day hikes aren't enough :) I live in the uintas, and don't know any backpackers. Any advice for a good overnighter for a beginner with lots of fishing?

I only know a few parts of the Uintas, but there are plenty of places to go off of the Mirror Lake parkway. For your first trips, just go in a little ways, find a nice spot and spend the night. Start with an overnighter, make it so it would be easy to bail back to your car if you need to go. Do some of those to start with, shake out your gear, and as you get more comfortable you can add more distance and more nights out.

Thanks for making a great video . Made doing cardio easier to do this a.m. I am definitely putting the Unitas on my list. Also enjoyed the talking about the end of an Era part , and the shot and Betsy lake (weather it was done intentionally or not) with you filming in the water and the shadow waving goodbye was genius.

That is good to hear! The beetles in the Uintas are out of control. Probably the only thing that will get rid of them now is a fire... sadly..

The Uintas are special! Be aware of altitude sickness as most of the wilderness is at or over 10,000 ft. It is an incredible place!

Dinner was delayed so I could watch the rest: I nearly always feel sad at leaving a backcountry place I've stayed. It's hard to explain, but I take pictures to try to capture it. But it's a real remorse when I leave.

The High Uintas are one of my favorite mountain ranges to hike in! The Bob is so big and wild. There's no way I could pick one over the other!

Only halfway through (that's all I can get these days): 1) Love the Indian Paintbrush at the beginning...one of my favorites. 2) What is that lure tying method called? I've always used what I think is called the fishermans or clinch knot.....

I probably should've taken that out since I didn't explain it. We were in Utah celebrating a family member we lost that was born and raised in Utah. I'm definitely going back, but it will be different from now on.

Enjoyed seeing some different country in a state I only have a passing acquaintance with. Your "end of an era" comment sounded a bit cryptic or melancholy, like it's the last time I'll ever pass this way. Hope not!

Yeah... I debated about leaving that comment in there or not and my wife convinced me that I should. We had someone pass away in the family who was instrumental in instilling a love of the mountains and the wilderness in us. He was born and raised in Utah and probably hiked every inch of the Wasatch. I'll definitely be back to Utah, but it will be different from now on.

@@mountainwanderer I truly regret your loss of a family member that made such an indelible impression on you and your love of the outdoors. I've had a few family members and others that have had that impact on me over the years so I fully understand how it makes you feel and how it makes you reflect on things past and future. I think your wife was right. But you did have me worried; I struck up an acquaintance with another outdoor KZbinr a while back and in one of his videos he said something kind of similar. I offered a positive comment and he replied that he had an inoperable brain tumor.

Utah is my home, and we certainly do have some beautiful areas to enjoy here. However, please refrain from ax throwing when you're visiting. Ax throwing, shooting trees, barking trees, cutting live branches, etc. all violate Leave No Trace practices, and ruins the experience for those who come after you. If you get bored easily, why not try packing out some of the garbage other careless campers have left behind?
