Justin Smith God I hope you're not English. The Union Jack is the official flag of the United Kingdom, not the flag of England. As far as I'm aware St George's Cross aka the flag of England is not used in an official capacity outside of England. So its perfectly reasonable for most non-English people to not recognize it.

The difference between knowing the flag of England and the flag of California is that England is a country not a state. We also have individual flags for our countys (which are different from states but kind of the same idea) but we don't expect people to know them.
