Have I seen this before?

I move stuff like that on rollers. I have a bunch of pvc drain pipes, old iron pipe, galvanized pipe from old chain link fences. Put a 2 x 4 on the ground like a track and 2 or 3 people could push that into place.

Yep. That’s the way I’ve always done it as well.

Nothing wrong with the process going slow...better to go slow and have it under control than fast with problems...and if you're getting paid by the hour all the better-lol!!

Hi Gaius. Thanks for the video. I've watched all of your free videos and enrolled in the 2023 Purely Post & Beam. It sure would be great if you could offer that course sooner. I have been on the fence about SIPS with post&beam. While watching this video I wondered if you could build a SIP structure, say 24x24 with the same profile as your 24x24 post&beam with just SIPS and no post&beam? Are the post&beam decorative and not really structurally needed??? I would never want to do that, but is there a lot of overkill when SIPS are utilized with post&beam? I think SIPs ane wonderful and post&beam are the greatest. Please ask Pat to do some more videos!

Hi Tom-thanks for watching. You certainly can build the 24x24 as a SIP only structure.....SIPs have been a part of the International Residential code since 2009 so you can build prescriptively with this technique, similar to 2x construction. In our class on SIP construction, we talk about the differences in using SIPs as a timber frame enclosure (simple installation with minimal framing lumber inside the SIP-very little thermal bridging) vs SIP only construction (relatively more involved connection details of SIP to SIP, much more imbedded lumber-more thermal bridging), but we also talk about how we prefer to use SIPs in conjunction with a timber frame because it results in a more durable structure. Should you ever need to repair or replace the SIPs due to poor installation or leaking doors, windows or roof, the timber frame carries the gravity loads allowing you to remove the damaged SIP; in SIP only construction, this becomes greatly complicated because the SIPs are carrying the gravity loads, and are relatively large modules, so removal may lead to some instability of the structure, requiring shoring of the structure prior to work being done. Stick built homes are similar to the timber frame/SIP model; when rot or termite damage is discovered in a wall, there is often sufficient redundancy in the framing to allow multiple studs to be removed and replaced without the need for shoring the structure.

@@ShelterInstitute Thank you very much for the detailed response. I can’t make the SIP class on 5/14 but hopefully the next one you schedule. Have a great day! I
