Like a lot of boaters, I trailered three different boats, for about 13 years. (Starting in the late 1960's). And I made some of the mistakes I watch others do now. I learned, but it took a while! Our next boats (27'-40') stayed in the water (31+ years).... Our present boat is on a lift in front of the house. If I had to go back to trailering a boat I would find a new hobby! ☺ It seems that some of the people around the boat ramps are different now....

Wellcraft owner for 30 years. Wife and I learned quick. I am great with the trailer and wife is good with the boat, so wife drops me off on dock and takes boat back out to holding pattern. When she sees my trailer hit the water, she lines up and approaches. I get out of truck and stand by the winch and safety chain. Wife drives on to trailer, I hook winch and chain while wife raises the outdrive. I jump back in the truck and drive up the ramp with wife still in the boat. As a boat approaches the dock, isn't the stern line more important than the bow line to stop the boat's momentum & prevent the stern from swinging outward (from the dock)? So many times I've seen the bow line secured first...(scratching my head).
@timkenyon60883 жыл бұрын
I have found that in most conditions, securing a mid-ship line is most effective as you can use it as a spring line. Next most effective is a bow line that can also be used as a spring line if there is sufficient room at the dock and sufficient slack in the line is provided.

First off this just reaffirms my thought that pwc's need their own ramp far away from real boats. Second if you have a boat of good size get a 4wd truck or SUV.
@johnbumpus71383 жыл бұрын
Or learn to balance the trailer load properly, there’s no reason you should need a 4x4 on a concrete ramp almost every time I see a truck lose traction in one of these videos I noticed that the back of the boat is hanging off the bunks meaning there is not enough tongue weight on the trailer that’s why it breaks traction Think of the axles as a fulcrum and the trailer is a lever with too much weight aft it’s actually lifting up the rear wheels of the truck reducing traction
@malekodesouza72553 жыл бұрын
@@johnbumpus7138 I disagree. 4x4 can be necessary, based on ramp conditions, tides, size/weight of boat & trailer etc. An underpowered rear wheel drive truck is overmatched quite often. We have a 25’ cabin cruiser. With boat, trailer, fuel, water, provisions etc we are nearing 10K pounds. Add a steep, wet ramp or one covered in slime, mud, sand, seaweed etc and a low tide and you better have a truck that’s up to the task. We purchased a 3/4 ton diesel 4x4 and I use 4x in low constantly to retrieve. Never got stuck once.
@johnbumpus71383 жыл бұрын
@@malekodesouza7255 if it’s necessary for you that’s fine. I have a 24’9” LOA Grady White sailfish with twin Evinrude 225s it’s a walk around fishing boat with a small cabin and a half tower , and 150 gallon fuel tank. It’s pretty heavy. I live in South Florida we don’t get ice and snow so I have a 2 Wheel drive GMC Sierra 2500 I am based out of Boynton Beach but i’ve taken it as far north as new Smyrna Beach and as far south as big pine key I only use public concrete boat ramps and because I took the time to set up my trailer and towing rig correctly I also never have a problem. If the ramp is so slimy that it makes rear wheels break traction wouldn’t it also make the front wheels break traction? If you’re in a production four-wheel-drive you’re not really getting power to the ground on all four wheels anyway unless you have lockers I’ve also pulled a 36 foot Scarab triple axle with no issues But like I said everybody is different and if you need four-wheel-drive that’s fine I just think that it’s not a necessity if people would set their towing rigs up correctly and learn a little bit about the physics of towing a load other than that one of the biggest problems I see is that people back their trailer way too far in even at low tide you should never have the rear wheels of your tow vehicle in the water also most of the weight should be forward the front wheels of the trailer this will solve most problems with traction and also swaying while going down the road if you feel more comfortable with four-wheel-drive and don’t mind the extra expense that’s fine It’s just not a necessity for most boats small enough to trailer
@johnbumpus71383 жыл бұрын
@@malekodesouza7255 maybe you are not aware but big rigs like freightliners Kenworth Peterbilt and so forth only have rear wheel drive and they generally pull trailers much heavier than any pleasure boat and are capable of doing it up inclines much deeper than boat ramps (like loading docks) They manage to do it with rear wheel drive only but if 4x4 makes people feel more comfortable at the boat ramp I won’t complain as long as it gets them out of my way faster 👌
