MOVE TO ITALY, LIVE & WORK IN THIS HISTORIC VILLA IN TUSCANY (Renovating a Ruin Part 6)

Thanks everyone for such a wonderful response. Perhaps I should clarify because it’s a bit confusing, the villa doesn’t need restoring because once the roof is repaired this month, it’s quite liveable and the whole place will be rented furnished as is with everything from mattresses, cooking pans and antique furniture to linen and outdoor furniture. It has worked quite well for the previous tenant who ran painting workshops offering accommodation in the 10+ bedrooms all with bathrooms. The restaurant is operational and ready to go. The cottage will be completely renovated by us before the new tenant moves in. Both Guido and I are already working seven days a week on so many other projects this year so the tenant really has free reign to make money from the property however they wish and we wouldn’t be involved at all other than helping them with legal admin and translation. The part of the villa that belongs to another owner prohibits Guido’s family from selling but doesn’t really influence things that much as the foreign owner has no interest in being there or changing anything and there is already so much space in the main part of the villa I showed in the video. My dream is to live and work in Italy and especially in Tuscany, which I've been told is the most beautiful place in the whole of Italy. Together we raised 8 beautiful children, and even though my heart is broken in a million pieces and my life will never be the same, I see beautiful parts of my beloved in each of my children. Just an idea...but what about trying to get someone in to run it as a wedding/event location? The villa could also then act as a base for the night before/of the wedding for the sposi and also for the pre-photos. Could also bring custom in to the town for guests wanting to stay nearby etc. My husband is from Genova and I am from Sydney and we got married in the hills of Liguria. It is run by a tuscan chef and her husband who live there and then run weddings/events. There were lots of huge but very glamorous villas to get married in in the centre of genova but the views and the more rustic vibe of the place in the hills with the sea in the distance was just magic for me. Plus, being further out there were less rules and everyone could just relax and have a fun evening. Your place reminds me a lot of where we got married in its ‘vibe’ (for want of a better word). This way you could have a permanent person running the restaurant/location but also make good use of the villa where they could generate some extra revenue. Just an idea...best of luck with it all and can’t wait to see the results. La villa é stupenda!

And whilst there are loads of wedding venues in Italy, I think this one could be priced very competitively because of the low rent, which would make it very appealling to either locals or people looking for a destination wedding who don't potentially have the deep pockets required for other locations. I can just imagine the amazing photos against the front of the villa or even the by the overgrown ivy on the wall of the villa next door...gorgeous!

Yes! It would be perfect for this and the tenant would be free to develop any kind of project like this and take all the income. Unfortunately, I’m already working 7 days a week and Guido has to run the olive groves and vineyards up near Florence so we need to find someone with initiative who could do this all themselves.

What a dream, I was telling my husband imagine having a masquerade ball, a theme party from different era, especially 1940’s and 50’s, weddings, anniversary’s. Keep dreaming. Dreams do come true 😊. Oh my gosh! I was in this house in September 2019 for a visit 😍 I fell in love with the house and have to think of it almost every day! I stayed in the room with the blue flower fresco. A very fair and generous offer! Just be sure the person who applies is not a slob. You have some priceless antiques there. Would hate for anything to be damaged. When we were living in France we found a rental with a huge yard for our animals. When I arrived to look at the house the agent said the house was rented as the person there just before me wanted it period. I went home and sulked because i knew the place was perfect for our dogs and cats. I told my husband about it and he called the agent offering to pay one year in advance.. The owners agreed on the spot. We lived there for many years and once a year the owners (exiled Polish Princess) would come and bring us chocolates and rave that the house was in better condtion than they left it. Kylie, what a great video, I loved listening to your challenges and sentiments attached to your ancestral property. It resonates with me, because the young generations of Goans who are now settled all over the world, have similar issues of their ancestral properties. As a result many of them sell them, which is tragic. The bigger they are the challenge of maintaining is greater. My dads home is almost 100 years old, it was small, I restored it.... and I feel that was one of my best decisions. The memories these historical homes hold are priceless! Guido and you will make things work, you have similar dreams. I wish you the best on your adventures.

When you published the first video of the renovation series, I thought of writing you an email. I even constructed it in my head, suggesting to be your all in one person on the property, for the pure joy of living the Tuscan dream. But I never typed it...and haven't sent it so far. Because of one million things we tell ourselves, and another mullion that pull us away. And now, I am hesitant to watch this video...because I am afraid that I won't be able to follow my dream... It sounds as if the solution is to start repairing this villa with family and friends and use the government money for basics such as paint, etc., And the Start to rent the space for wedding venues and parties as the Britt's are doing in France. Volunteers is a very good way to go about.
