Thanks for highlighting Italian jazz! I'm a jazz trumpet player from Canada and I spent a lot of time living, working, and studying in Italy. I lived in Siena for a while and found that the musicians were of top quality. They were fantastic to perform with and made me feel like I belonged. It's hard not to be inspired in such gorgeous surroundings. The most striking thing to me was how the Italian public still has an admiration for jazz as an art form. Your videos are beautiful and I can't wait to get back to Italy!

Hi Kylie. This video reminds me of a story that the Blue Zones author, Dan Buettner, likes to tell and which he wrote about in a 2012 New York Times article, entitled "The Island Where People Forget to Die ." It's about a Greek man from Ikaria who moved to the U.S. in 1943 and was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 1976 when he was in his mid-60s. His doctors gave him 9 months to live. Instead of trying to fight the cancer with expensive and aggressive chemotherapy, he decided to live out the rest of his limited time back home in Ikaria and die there. The funeral would also be a lot less expensive for his family. Upon returning to the Greek island, his diet and daily routine changed quite a bit and he started to feel better. When the article was written, he was still alive and cancer-free at 97, although he insisted he was 102 because the documentation was incorrect. He never went through chemotherapy, took drugs, or sought therapy of any sort. He didn't seek out special holistic doctors in Ikaria, join a gym, or take vitamins and minerals. All he did was to return to his home in the Mediterranean and live life the way everyone else there did. And, amusingly, the man told Buettner that, 25 years after moving to Ikaria, he decided to return to America for a visit to see if his doctors could explain to him why he never died. Turns out, they were all dead. Ikaria and Sardinia are both Blue Zones with a large percentage of the population living well for more than 9 or 10 decades. They have a much healthier diet, are more physically active (walking and gardening), and socialize much more than people in many other parts of the world. Western junk food has infected some of these areas now, but your video is a reminder that many of the things that lead to a long and healthy life are still present throughout Italy. Living a simpler life. Eating fresh (and real) food. And walking and socializing more. There are many components to La Dolce Vita. Your videos do a great job showing why life in the Mediterranean can lead to all of that if you live it the way that people did before McDonald's and KFC came along. You will probably live a longer and healthier life in Italy than you would have if you'd remained in Australia. I hope so. It's another reason why that part of the world is so appealing to many of us. Thanks for all you do to reveal it.

What a fascinating story!!! I can’t thank you enough for sharing this important message. 🌿🌸🥬
Wow. .thank you for such an inspirational story & his experience with, or lack thereof, chemotherapy. But it's amazing & scary what we'll do sometimes to stay alive. I definitely think a proper diet is essential

Watching your video has given me a distinct sense of what the Germans call "Fernweh" - wanderlust or a longing to travel. We mostly cook for ourselves on holiday too and shopping is an experience. My parents are Italian. I asked them why they chose to emigrate. She said that being romantic at heart, they wanted an adventure together on completely unknown territory and that when she disembarked from her boat in Fremantle Western Australia, it was the most elated and invigorated she felt her entire life. And as my mother explains, life is what you make it. You have presented Italy in the most romantic way and of course not all of Italy is as inspiring. But certainly those areas that are beautiful, are so much so as to overwhelm and seduce. And if life is about making it as you want, then thank you for showing us the best that Italy has to offer. I am so inspired to rethink where I live. "I never felt at home in a country that really celebrates the athlete"... YES... I felt this so deeply in my soul. It's okay to celebrate the athlete.... if we equally celebrate and praise intellectual growth and capabilities. Unfortunately, it's cool to be intellectually infantile in American... politics are a highlight of the insanity that is everywhere. It's a frustrating culture overall. So, so glad for you, Kylie.

You are really doing a wonderful job. Seeing that post office reminds me when I used to live in Firenze (multi anni fa ) we lived in a Pensione just around the corner. When I first walked into the post office I was totally in awe of how gorgeous the building is. The best part of living there was the church bells ringing on Sunday, io ❤️ Italia...........🤗🇨🇦

I lived in Florence for 8 months a few years ago - watching this video just gave me an incredibly emotional reaction. I had forgotten how absolutely beautiful it is, thank you for reminding me.

You, Ms. Flavell, possess inherent curiosity. And that in my humble opinion is what this world needs more of. I live in the USA and have lived in Europe and I agree with you on every point. Here in the USA, most are rather quite content with the ridiculousness called "making money" with no time for art, culture, history, culinary adventures (outside of a charcuterie board - insert sarcasm), philosophy, and nuanced music that hasn't been shoved down your throat. As a man, it is refreshing to see that women such as yourself exist in this world, beyond the realm of the physical - without a childish exertion towards the material. Thank you for your grace, your style, your vision, and most importantly, for sharing it with all of us.

Kylie Flavell, que hermosos videos pones para disfrutar. It is dessert for the eyes! Such beautiful imagery. Brings back beautiful memories I had with la mía moglie. Some day please go to the state of Zacatecas, Mexico di vaccanza. La mía famiglia siamo di Zacatecas, Messico. Visit the small towns of Tlaltenango, Teul and Atolinga! You would love the friendly small colonial towns. I am already imagining your beautiful videos of the plazas, the active small farmer mercados, the countryside, and the friendly people and you narrating it. Every morning, these beauriful pueblos come to life. I know the pandemic has stalled life for a while, but hopefully things get back to some normality. My familia would even offer to host you and would be very humbled. Arrivederci fro Arizona. Gracias!

I'm not an artist or creative person, and I've experienced exactly what you are talking about regarding the beauty and romance of the everyday in Italy. It is incredibly alluring. Regarding the budget, my experience traveling at Airbnbs in Italy really opened my eyes to how inexpensive groceries are and how much better the quality is than here in the US.

Great video.. (again!). The jazz concerts are great. But also the music you choose for the fragments. Especially the postoffice part. Thanks again! I'm looking forward to the next one..

Good morning, Kylie, I am rationing myself to your delightful films so that I don't watch them all at once and run out! It is a joy to see Florence this morning. Many of my friends are academics who have specialized in Italian art and spend time in Italy every year. I completely agree with many of your wonderful suggestions. For professional interests and pleasure, of course, I stay most often in Venice and even there, where the throughput of tourists can be overwhelming, owners of certain bars become friendly and kind when you frequent them regularly. When I was a student and had to be super careful with my resources the snacks at apertif time were so generous that it wasn't necessary to buy supper! Before lockdown I had been offered a small stipend, covering my lodging and accommodation, to attend a course for specialists in Italian drawing in Rome, Florence and Arezzo so I am very much hoping that it will run next summer and I can carry forward my unused leave and spend a few months in Venice to research and work on an article about Oriental Figures in the Art of the Tiepolo. So lovely to see that the Florentines have kept their magnificent post office. Unfortunately, in Venice, although the architectural integrity of the building has been maintained, it has been converted into a high-end store with many luxury international brands in its space. Have a lovely day! 😊💕
