What'd be crazier is if movie pass 5 years down the line starts building their own exclusive theaters and cut out every other chain
@Corndog43827 жыл бұрын
chrisgotem1990 The problem is that current movie theaters are barely making it even at the high price they currently have. They wouldn't make it.

ConRon We live in a world where music, movies, etc. are free and still pay for services like Netflix, Spotify, etc. and they all manage to turn a profit. I'm not saying this would happen, but maybe they say forget getting a cut of the concession stand profit and make their own theater and put everything else out of business. Just something crazy to think about.
@Corndog43827 жыл бұрын
chrisgotem1990 Netflix and Spotify are able to do this because their overhead is tiny. It's just bandwidth. Owning a giant building with property taxes, leases, heating and cooling, etc. It gets crazy expensive very quickly, but I get what you mean. There's potential but I'd be real hard.

I'm all in for Moviepass. I'm glad someone is shaking up the movie industry because it was about time. These theaters and studios are charging way too much. Even if it hurts the studios, maybe they will spend their money more wisely instead of throwing money at garbage movies. I'm not worried about them mining data because it won't be that personal. Sure they'll have your age, ethnicity, and location but that isn't that personal. All these major tech companies are already mining much more personal data than Moviepass will and most people don't bat an eye.
@wills21407 жыл бұрын
Movie Pass will have as much personalized data as they can. Including all of your viewing habits, location, movies you tried to get tickets for, personal data about you and app usage.
@Mekonify7 жыл бұрын
People opt in and voluntarily offer all that kind of personalized information and more already for things that give them FAR less in return. I don't think that will be a factor in the decision for the majority of your average consumer.

ScreenJunkies News I get AMC's point but not sure it is actually unsustainable. They should just look at UK as an example. So here for e.g. Cineworld which is a huge movie theatre chain here has a monthly pass for £17.40. Again unlimited movies you can see on that. So 2 movie tickets would cover that cost. So it is hugely successful. And it's been going on for years and is still very popular. I guess the key difference is that it is one movie chain only, not just any theatres, but Cineworld is all over UK, so it works!
@TheIndSin7 жыл бұрын
Oh also, this Cineworld monthly pass is a lot more flexible though - multiple movies a day, 10% off snacks in the theatre and after a year of using it, 3D movies are also free (except IMAX) and food discount increases to 20%. Still it is being sustained for so long now.

I personally don't know how MoviePass has survived. I use their pass at least 2 times a week for my own movie reviews and they are definitely losing money on me. I'm not complaining. I just hope the gravy train lasts a while. Good pro and con breakdown guys, and I don't mind if they do the data mining thing.
@IreneShardaForever7 жыл бұрын
Because for every one of you, there are three or four who won't use their movie pass at ALL in a month, simply from being too busy, too bored, or just not up for seeing anything. You make your money on those people who are still paying every month, and yet, only see maybe one or two movies a month, if that. Also, prices for movies fluctuate. Someone in LA pays way more for a movie than someone in a small town in the Midwest. Money can even out that way as well.
@Champiness7 жыл бұрын
IreneShardaForever Though as mentioned in the video, at their current prices a customer seeing two movies in a month is enough to put them at a loss. Whatever nominal profit they make on inactive moviegoers or price variations is a drop in the bucket compared to their anticipated source of money: data mining.

MoviePass doesn't make money on you, they make money 3 ways: 1) Members who don't use their cards as often. 2) Selling movie goer data, like what they like to see, when, where, what times, that data is worth millions and 3) Advertising to those same consumers, on social media and teaming up with other entities to do so. They aren't hurting.
@linusmlgtips21237 жыл бұрын
IreneShardaForever That's untrue. I can bet you the vast majority of members will be seeing at least once a month, enough for them to be losing money on most customers. Where I live, an adult ticket is $15.50

Do American cinema chains not already have unlimited cards? Here in the UK the actual cinema chains (cineworld, Odeon) offer unlimited cards to watch any film you want. I don't 100% agree with you that it will give accurate data. Because I'm going to get this and see movies like Dark Tower, Despicable Me 3 and Atomic Blonde and more that I wouldn't actually pay full prices to see. So it would be false information for them. The thing that hurts the movie industry is bad movies and high ticket prices.
@wills21407 жыл бұрын
And being totally honest, there were so many bad or poor quality movies this summer. Even with movie pass, I would never have gone to see The Mummy or Bay Watch, just as examples.
@MyssBlewm7 жыл бұрын
The data will collect that you went to go watch Dark Tower, Despicable Me 3, and Atomic Blonde so on paper it will look like audiences will watch films like those, so it'd be win/win for Movie Pass and movie studios. Whether it reflects on your true tastes in films or not will be inaccurate, but that doesn't matter. So long as movie studios see numbers that indicate that people show interest in the films they make, they will continue to keep things as they are.
@JordanSedai7 жыл бұрын
MyssBlewn Yes, and that's fine assuming that people don't change, but they do. Whether on an individual level, or societal level, people do get upset/bored and eventually stop watching things that maybe once were considered adequate. So in the long run, they will end up making movies that may have appeared to be good enough but that are now failing, which will mean that the collected data will begin to be more and more useless unless they find a better way to refine the system. Maybe if MoviePass had a rating system, a sharing system, and allowed repeat viewings, they could really get a far better gauge of enthusiasm to help provide better data, but without those, I do feel like this still ultimately fail because the data will prove worthless. So yeah, if the data does become useless, it definitely could lead to the destruction of movie theaters as we know it. Maybe that's just what should happen, given the "progress" of unfettered capitalism, but it's still somewhat worrisome as it could completely shake up an entire industry and affect hundreds of thousands of workers' lives.

The biggest problem with all of this is that tickets are way too expensive these days. Big corporations are charging way too much, all just to satisfy the big guys from up top. This MoviePass deal shows that people want to go to the movies, but are unable to because they're either too busy or just don't have the money (maybe a bit of both). I don't know if MoviePass will succeed, though I hope it does, but I think it does represent a much bigger problem that really does need to be addressed and fixed. Even theaters outside of MoviePass are losing money due to the prices of tickets and concessions.

BTW, as for the data, I'd happily give them all my opinions about what I want to see if they are going to use it to make better movies.

And it gains steam when we go to see 3 or 4 times as many movies per month as we do now. People used to see ton more movies per capita in the theater than they do now. This will really benefit the non tent pole movies because the demand of content will increase so people will still see one tent pole a month and need 3-5 more movies to feel like they are getting their monies worth out of the subscription.

AMC should stop looking for a scapegoat. They've raised their prices. Most likely based off of some skewed data provided by any number of research/data firms. It's nice to get out for a sociable experience now and again but is it worth the money when you can: stay home, pause when you like, get better food (for 1/10th the price) at your leisure, converse with your friends, family, etc? Not to mention the fact that one could actually own two recently released films for the price of two movie tickets. This isn't rocket science. So, stop paying data firms that promise you it is. The smart play would have been to lower your prices (yeah, I know studios dictate certain factors - renegotiate). Lower prices, bring people into the theaters and have a substantially higher profit margin with less fluctuations. Decades ago, people used to go to movies that were even questionable because it still would have provided a sociable situation. Now, unless it's a slam dunk, people don't want to risk it. The movie business is suffocating under its own weight. For what it's worth, I don't intend to go to a movie until the rate of inflation catches up to these price changes, however unlikely that may be.
@wills21407 жыл бұрын
AMC isn't necessarily blaming Movie Napster (tm) [ thanks +Champiness ]. Due to AMC's parent company's experience in the Chinese market, they know what can possibly be coming: Severely reduced viewing, especially on week days. AMC is trying to prevent what Dan said: unsustainable pricing expectations by filing a lawsuit. I'm not fan of AMC theaters and all of their excuses for the ways they have raised prices, but your response is nearly perfect. If you don't like the way a business prices its' products or services, don't give them your money.

@williamsimkulet78327 жыл бұрын
The notion the music industry was "crippled" by filesharing is absurd. In many notable cases sales went UP on music shared on Napster, not down. All Napster did was force the music industry to sell their product at a fair cost in a fair distribution format. Technological advances make distribution of music next to free, leaving production and marketing costs to be covered. And if you produce a quality song and sell it for .99 cents, people will buy it. If you produce 14 other crappy tracks and want people to buy a CD for $15 and actively sabotage them trying to put it on their ipad... all the worse for you. You're not selling music; you're ransoming it.
@wills21407 жыл бұрын
That isn't quite what actually happened to the music industry... Napster was flat out stealing the work of artists/producers/record companies and passing it on to users. Till they were sued, they never paid a dime in royalties. So what if a few popular artists had their sales go up? Napster and file sharing killed the profit model of the recording industry and takes the work product of artists. Granted, record companies should have been out in front and have offered each individual song at a fair price.., but you can't judge the damage done by the results we consumers have gained. Music artists hardly see much money from sales of their "records" (downloads of their output), they make money from tours and royalty sales for commercial use. As consumers we could always buy a "single" (on vinyl/tape/cd) of popular or recent release music. It was the sale of full albums that paid older older or niche artists.
@hastyscorpion7 жыл бұрын
Dude people don't pay for music anymore. If that isn't "crippling" I don't know what it. Artists make all their money on touring now because they can't sell music anymore. Yes in the short term it may have helped sell some albums but in the long term the internet has destroyed the market for music by giving it away for free.
@williamsimkulet78327 жыл бұрын
Radio has always given music away for free. The Music Industry is still quite thriving' there are still songs released, etc. What you mean is that fatcats don't make as much money for doing nothing as they used to. There's a 10 cent markup, not a $10 markup. So yes; I suppose any industry that is used to gouging customers - charging them far more than what it cost to produce and distribute - is going to be upset they can't rip people off anymore. Boo hoo. If you think for a moment that music CEOs and pop stars don't make quite a living, you're fooling yourself.
@williamsimkulet78327 жыл бұрын
Actually, Napster was SHARING the work of people who OWNED THE WORK with others. Information technology has made sharing quite easy, but this has been a worry with ANY advanced technology - radio, tv, computers, etc. When does your right to lend out your copy of a book end? If you ask the book seller; selling used copies is unacceptable, lending copies is unacceptable, etc. They want everyone to give them money to use their goods. The same can be said for car manufacturers, shovel manufacturers, etc. But this is absurd, and you'd never see a shovel company suing you for lending shoves. The idea that the music industry isn't obscenely flush with cash today is absurd. Live concerts alone bring in huge $, and free music on the radio just is advertisement for that. They license music to movies, video games, television shows. Poor old Shaggy, had his music napstered, became famous, made lots of money.
@wills21407 жыл бұрын
You are not getting the difference between a physical product and the intellectual property rights of a work product. The shovel manufacturer made his money when the shovel was sold, lending out (for free, as renting is not fair use) makes no difference, the shovel was sold and he got his patent royalties. Music and entertainment content is intangible, especially in digital formats. Radio played performance use royalties to record companies and music publishers, who then give a small percentage to the artist/creator. If Napster never paid those fees and royalties, the artist never got anything for their effort and work.

My wife and I used to go see a movie just about every week, but just didn't see the point as of 3-4 years ago when the prices literally doubled in just a few years. Far too many theaters do everything they can think of to force you to pay the highest possible ticket price for a move you want to see by eliminating most morning and matinee showings which weren't 3d/Imax. Then they after 2-3 weeks (when gift certificates can be used and such) they only show it on the crappiest smallest screens. I find little value in theaters any longer, and can wait a few months for a $1 rental thank you.

Excellent analysis. I will note about Napster and the music industry, when cds first came out they were pretty expensive around $18 to $20. They promised the price would come down as production cost went down. That didn't happen. As cd's would cost a dollar or less to produce they kept the price the same for a good 15 years. Keeping the price too high for too long motivated the technologically skilled to find method to create high quality pirates audio. If the music studios lowered the prices when they said they would, that motivation wouldn't have existed. So the music industry's greed shot them in the foot.

I didn't want to drive to the theater in another city to use movie pass and find out there's no good seats left and hate the 1 theater that is in my city. I understand why they make you have to be around the theater to buy the tickets though, to make sure your not just buying tickets everyday and then not going to go see the movie.

Oh that is true. I worked at a theater for 3 years, I got WAY too use to seeing everything for free. I go maybe three times a year now. Lol. Price sensitivity is a vital part of demand for a product. AMC has a point. Further, because of streaming services, less and less people are going to theaters. I go to a drive-in for ambiance and because my city shows older movies for free there. It's WAY more comfortable to watch a movie at home a few months later and pay... what 3-5$ on Amazon to rent it than to shell out $9-14 for a ticket. BOTH NATO (theater owners) and studios need to make change ups to ensure their survival in this changing environment, these are long lasting trends and consumers do have altered tastes. I look forward to 20yrs down the road to see how theaters will need to adapt to compete.

In England, there are a chain of cinemas called Cineworld that have run since opening with a membership card. You pay £17.99 a month and can see as many movies as you want. I don't know if a similar system is run by cinema chains in America but they've been running for about 15 years in my county so must be able to make a profit with it. I guess it works because it guarantees that every film you want to see you make sure you see at their cinema chain rather than another one. I also think that they make most of their money from food and drinks so if they can get you to come twice a month then that's good for them. I find it means we go and see films we'd never see otherwise as you can take a risk on a film when it's not that specific film you're paying out money for.

Thank you for making this informative video! I will say I haven't seen anywhere officially stated that this $10 deal will run for a whole year. Perhaps this deal will only last for a few months, and then they'll raise the monthly fee.

Michelle Todd I know there's no way the price will remain $10 a month but I hope it's for a year at least

I would say I've definitely spent less than $120/year going to the movies, on average. So even at this low price point, the studios would be getting more money from some people.

AMC is nervous about Movie Pass because of potential game changer this could be. You start sh*tting bricks when your position on the food chain is in danger of being lowered 😓

Cineworld in the UK has had something like this for a few years now. about £17.90/month (used to be £15) for unlimited 2D viewings with no restrictions as far as I'm aware. You have to sign up for a year and 3D requires an extra few £'s. I have no idea how it has affected the chain since it started though.

At least 4 of the big cinemas here in the UK do unlimited deals where you pay £20 a month and you can watch as many movie's that you want in that month👏👏👏👏

MP would be fools to ever cut out an entire theater chain. Part of the appeal of their service is it works everywhere. If it only worked here and there, possibly not at all in certain towns that might only have one brand of theater, it wouldn't be nearly as appealing of a service to the consumer.
@willschneider46167 жыл бұрын
I remember a Time article (so grains of salt) about 10 years ago that said movie theaters make about 85% of their profit on concession sales. More butts in more seats at the theater also means more popcorn, more hot dogs, more Red Vines, and such being sold to moviegoers to fill the coffers of the theaters.
@dere73437 жыл бұрын
odean (one of biggest movie chains in uk) has limitless £20 per month card. I don't know their sign up details, but if it wants info about yourself and you have to scan card to get ticket then odean would have the same analytics as the moviepass deal, which they too could sell to studios
@carlrood44577 жыл бұрын
If you think concessions are expensive now, how much will they be if theaters have to split the money? That's already a big chunk of theater profits since most of the ticket sales go to the distributors.

I have a question for you, With all the courtesy cards, GPS in phones are we not giving data like this to begin with? Plus I also think that movie ticket prices and concessions have gone through the roof. I find that I can take my family to the movies only on the customer appreciation days. Spending 100 bucks to take my family to the movies is just no longer an option and spending the money on a projector and a screen to have a movie experience with netflix or amazon and spend 30 bucks...I can wait for movies to come out on blu-ray or digital download.
@RedNose3217 жыл бұрын
What about the value/appreciation of movies and the time you spend in a cinema? What I mean is... if it is raining, or cold outside, or you have too much time until your next appointment, or you are just bored and dont know what to do... with this pass you just can watch a random movie. You are not really interested in it, but is dry and warm, maybe you can have a little chat during the movie or you are on your phone, maybe you enter or leave the cinema during the show... you do anything you want because you just do not care about the movie because it kind of does not cost anything. Do you think this can be a problem?

We have a limitless card for odean in the UK £20 a month or £205 a year, you can watch as many film in the day as you want, you can watch the same film more than once. Imax you only have to pay £5 instead of £16, its saved me £130 a month watching films

This is great, now I won't have the pick between The Big Sicks and Spider-Man's anymore, I can just watch both! This will affect lower budget movies for the better! More people will be willing to watch less heard of movies now.

Very insightful video. Ultimately the goal is to grow the industry. People get more for less, more people are willing to subscribe and pay monthly. It's exactly like Netflix or Apple Music.

It sounds like a corporation complaining about other corporations taking a large piece of the pie. Look back 20 years ago, I went to local movie theaters that were owned locally until chain theaters with smaller auditoriums, lousy sound and non-fresh concession took over. It's a new wave of corporate takeovers and the only thing it comes down to is the individual. It's up to the consumer if they want to pay extra to support your local theater; if there are any anymore.

Interesting argument from AMC. I absolutely get where they are coming from. Moviepass would be wise to stick to a tiered pricing setup for 2 movies a month up to unlimited. Say, 10 bucks for 2 flicks and 50 for unlimited along with a 2 week delay for new movies at the 10 dollar tier or no limits for unlimited? I would happily pay 20 to 30 per month for 10 movies or so.
@wills21407 жыл бұрын
That pricing structure would actually be the best way for movie theater operators to compete directly with Movie Pass!
@DanielHaywood7 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of people would willingly trade their data (particularly if it's just movie watching data) for unlimited movies for $10. If that makes the business model sustainable, MoviePass will make it and it will signficantly increase ticket sales. AMC is just scared because MoviePass will get big and eventually have economic leverage over the movie chains to reduce prices. And reducing prices would really not be a bad outcome.
@desertrose06017 жыл бұрын
People have been going less because it's gotten too expensive. With MoviePass, people are going to go much more, buy more concessions, and end up making AMC a ton of money. They have no reason to be whining about that.
@TheNamekianClown7 жыл бұрын
I understand the fears, and it could get rocky for a while, but I think if things work out right, this could simply lead to higher attendance to movies, leading to more money overall via concessions and then more people seeing more movies rasing the value of movies that few people currently see.

AMC should sale the movie going experience like COX sold cable. Straight up theatre install into your home with all the works. Food is out the window cause you'll have your kitchen (and probably making better health choices) if that's where we're headed far as people going to see movies. Going out like Mini malls man I'm sad.

in NYC because they charge you more for recliner seats it be 15 dollars for a regular ticket and around 20 for imax. i hate how the theaters do overcharge the prices for a movie ticket. i would be 100% fine to watch a movie for 20 dollars if they promise to give me a digital copy of the movie when they release the dvd copy.
@wills21407 жыл бұрын
That could be one way theater operators gain more business: offering to include digital downloads of movies you have bought a ticket to see.

hi john love your channel,yes this system with cards already exist in holland, 19 euros per month for regular movies or the premium deal of 26 euro with inc 3d, imax and disscount on food and drinks. main difference it's the movie chain exploit that is giving out this subscriptions. keep up the good work
