Laura P interesting take, any specific examples? I thought they did a great job of asking the main questions, how do you make money now and in the future, how do you justify asking for 20%, how will you profit from my data. Granted, they asked these politely, but they didn't shy away from getting answers.

Agreed, they did challenge him to answer the tough questions, however the delivery was very cordial. He did answer and to his credit, he did a good job at demonstrating the fact that the MoviePass team is thinking about all of these things. It's important to understand they have to prove they can innovate quickly in order to not only stay ahead and on top - if more product in line with this business model pop up - but to differentiate themselves and really focus in on that element of freedom of choice he alluded to so many times.

Dibils YS There has been some controversy that MoviePass screws over some of the theaters because of what it takes from ticket and food sales
@thebigmick19776 жыл бұрын
It tries to take from theaters. Some may be giving in, most will not. I don't like their tactics at all and I don't see them keeping this model going. By the end of the year, I bet MoviePass raises their subscription fees.
@williestyle356 жыл бұрын
+Garrett Neal , MoviePass does not force any theater or theater chain to participate with them. There is *no* taking by Movie Pass, any exhibitors can choose not to work with MoviePass, but can't stop Movie Pass from from buying tickets. It seems unfair in some ways, but that is the nature of business.
@garretneal18756 жыл бұрын
It is taking in the sense that certain theaters agreed to accept movie pass and then MoviePass came in later to ask for the ticket and concession money. AMC has the power to say no, but some independent theaters are stuck in a deal they didn't think they were getting. Most of them still are probably making more money than they otherwise would, but it was still dishonest on MoviePass's part and that is where the controversy comes in I think.

TrojanofNarnia I seriously don't understand the problem with the end of Annihilation. Unless it's an issue with thar whole sequence with Natalie Portman, which my only issue is that it was overplayed. But considering the revelations, the very end of the movie makes sense and is pretty unambiguous.

TrojanofNarnia All those questions are answered in the title of the movie. I would encourage you to look up the definition of the word and see which one(s) could be applied to the movie. agreed. Dan was very critical of the movie pass business model and feel it would have made for a more balanced interview. But then again Screen Junkies may not have been looking for that kind of piece and if he was there it would look like he did a 180 on his views. Or Movie Pass may have put a restriction on the interview that he not be one of the presenters. Any way around it I can see no downside for the consumer but still have issues with the Movie Pass business model. "You like all the extra revenue we bring to your theater? That's great now we want a piece of it or we'll no longer let our subscribers to use your theater."

His comparison to the money they are spending - to essentially pay for their used content to the way NETFLIX spends it's money developing content was very clever.
@melvinlinderoth71086 жыл бұрын
sean galvin Well I don’t understand how that comparison makes any sense. Netflix pays to get more film in their library and then they earn money for each subscriber they have, the two costs are independent of each other. While it cost more each month for moviepass the more subscribers they get, the costs are dependent of each other that’s why it’s impossible to sub stain.
@julianroth3266 жыл бұрын
Melvin, did you not watch the interview? They are trying to get discounts from theaters for selling more tickets, they are trying to make money from studios for advertising small movies to their customers - never underestimate the value of metadata - and not everyone who is subscribed to moviepass actually goes on to watch more than they pay for. People also subscribe for the convenience of going to see a movie whenever they want. Theaters aren't surviving on selling tickets anyways, when people are "saving" 10$ at the register, a lot of them are more likely to buy drinks and snacks. Moviepass automates a lot of communications and transactions between theaters, studios and audience and there's a good chance it turns out to be a win-win-win-win scenario.
@melvinlinderoth71086 жыл бұрын
Julian Röth Yea I know but that’s not my point they can’t substain themselves with just the money from subscriptions, my point was more about it not being like Netflix

@ThomBartley6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know but what puts me off is 1) It's double the price. 2) It's Cineworld only and that's not my local cinema. 3) You have to sign up and pay for a year at a time. Thanks though.
@MrDanieldeakin6 жыл бұрын
Well, I feel like I should be head of their marketing XD 1. You get 10% (25% after a year) off concessions and special offers as well as advanced screenings (At cineworld) also, you get 3D free after a year too. 2) Again, there is one for Odeon called Odeon Limitless and its the same concept. 3) You can pay monthly after the minimum contract period (12 months), thats if you ever want to leave XD I've been an Unlimited member for 2 years and I've see 220 films so I've got my moneys worth.
@ThomBartley6 жыл бұрын
Nice man. Good it works for you. It doesn't really work for me because A) My local is a Showcase B) I go to the cinema with friends a lot and where we really go varies between Cineworld, Showcase, Odeon, Everyman etc. It's cool if you've got a local but for me I don't. That's why MoviePass is cool because you're not tied to one cinema. I don't think it'll be long before they launch into international markets anyways.
@mmmduckie6 жыл бұрын
I've got a Limitless pass and I love being able to see multiple films a day - only pay for the petrol there and back one time, and you can watch 3 or 4 movies a day if you get your schedule right. Though the Moviepass model of being able to go to 3 or 4 different cinema chains is very tempting, I'd probably still stick with Limitless for that reason if Moviepass ever came to the UK

Great interview to listen to. I can validate Mitch Lowe's assumptions (one data point, I know. I signed up for MP last year in October, and my wife got MP a month later. We had stopped going to movies because the cost had become prohibitive (family of 4). We'd rather wait until movies were on Netflix/HBO/Amazon/etc. We have averaged 2 movies a month, up from one every two months. Yes, we've gone to see Star Wars, Black Panther, among other blockbusters. We have also ventured into movies that we would not have otherwise seen in the theatre (I, Tonya, The Shape of Water, Ferdinand). We have still spent the same money at concessions on every visit, so the theatres are definitely benefitting from the increased traffic. A service like this is a win-win for everyone involved. Keep up the good work!

@archduke kitten. The theater industry has been killing itself by inflating ticket costs hoping to make more but making less. Moviepass corrects their mistake and AMC will eventually be forced to choose between A) life before Moviepass and sinking annual revenues and B) life after MoviePass with exponential new revenues from lower cost ticket sales and concessions. They won’t be able to create their own MoviePass and will take the deal Mitch mentioned that has protection they want.

This is exactly the interview I have been waiting for! After having MoviePass for the last couple of months, my thought has been I should take full advantage of this deal while I can. With this interview, I'm more comforted to learn that there is a long-term vision and it isn't simply a quick data-mining venture that will be gone once they get what they need. Mitch seems like a smart guy who is a genuine fan of movies (I'm guessing he's a bit partial to those of Wes Anderson :D), which is also refreshing to hear.

Great interview, thank you. I got mine at Costco just before Xmas last year. I liked it enough that I bought two more subs as gifts. My original plan was to do a movie a day for a year, but the death of a family friend made THAT impossible (so rude!)... Now the chain's broken, Idon't go when I'm at movie festivals (Noir City in SF, Dam Short in Boulder City)...but the MP experience is spectacular. I have three Regals within walking distance of my house (that's the kind of thing that happens when you live in the City of Entertainment [oh, and I pay no state taxes either BECAUSE THERE AREN'T ANY]) and MP has renewed my desire to be in a theater. The market's dropped a bit; i just bought shares in HMNY today in hopes they're able to put it all together. I'm a big believer in the Peter Lynch theory of invest in things you use. (I also exercise every day I see flix...Sittin' in a movie theater, repetitively, will kill you...So my MP membership is actually responsible for making me more fit.) As a movie fan, I hope they do well. If not...at least the flaming chariot heading into the sun will have good flix.

I used my Movie Pass for the first time last week. The manager at my local Marquee 12 helped me activate the app. I was expecting her to be frustrated because of Movie Pass but it was quite the opposite! We talked about her take on MP and she was extremely positive. She said that she could not understand why any theater would not want to except MP. She said it is a win win for everyone. I think the negative MP press is from big chains like AMC. For most theaters I bet they love the extra business.

I already had MoviePass since December and seen a dozen films but listening to dude talk about it and knowing he's been involved in all these other companies, I feel like it's gonna actually be around for awhile.

I've been a MoviePass subscriber since 2015. At first I would go to the movies 3 times every weekend (Fri, Sat, and Sun) for the first few months. The most I ever went in one month was 15 visits. But now, I only go about 3 times a month. I also live in NYC, so just going once a month is worth the price for a subscription. Movies generally cost $15 and there are very few matinee prices in NYC.

I have a Movie Pass (got two for my girlfriend and myself for her birthday) ad we use them all the time. I think this is an amazing startup and as an independent producer - I love their attitude towards indie moviemaking.

He is right about mid to low end budget movies. Tickets got so expensive I switched to 6-8 event movies a year. Since I got Movie pass in November I go about once a week and have checked several movies never would have seen due to the cost threshold. Not sure how long it will last, but I love it right now.

Thank you for this, ScreenJunkies. This made me feel WAY less guilty about being a MoviePass holder (Which I held off on doing for months and months).

Hi, I’m a believer. A friend of mine at work told me about MoviePass last year, I applied and got the card after that it just sat in my wallet because I didn’t understand it. I’ve since gone on KZbin and got a clear understanding. So far this week I’ve gone to the movies three times. I saw The Incredibles, Oceans 8 and Jurassic World. I love MoviePass I hope it never goes way.

Ive had moviepass for months now and I LOVE IT.I tend to go 3-4 times a month since I got it. I have been spreading the word to friends and even strangers. My only issue is how long it takes to get the card. I was told 7-10 and did not get it till almost a month after that.

This was a great interview that has me pretty much sold on Movie Pass. I saw ~10 movies in theaters last year and that felt low to me. The only thing holding me back is the inability to buy in advance from home. Having to be at the theater, ordering the tickets in app, then ordering again & paying at the box office seems like a hassle. Most of the theaters in my area have reserved seating so advance ordering is a must
