It’s really cool to see things like that and how movie magic can make it look realistic on screen, because the retractable ones for example don’t look particularly believable.
@Piklets2 жыл бұрын
There’s certainly a lot that can be done both on set and in post to movie magic - sometimes the angles or framing are adjusted so you can’t quite see the fine details of the retractable. I’ve seen it done in silhouette before, and even in post a whole different knife plastered on top. There’s also some very high quality retractables (like the one at the end which goes into the handle) which look super convincing - there’s so many fine details from so many different departments in film - insanely impressive when it all comes together

Curious, what's the safety protocol with these? What checks are there to make sure an actor isn't given a sharp knife instead of a retractable or rubber one or whatever? Just the propmaster? Do the actors check too?
@BeetleBuns2 жыл бұрын
depends on whether or not the actor is alec baldwin, he doesn't even check if it's a real gun
@vinneythe14th682 жыл бұрын
I mean, I'm no expert or anything, but since they're not guns literally anybody given the knife can probably tell. Because a real knife would actually have some heft to it, unlike a rubber knife. Also, you could easily just touch the tip and see if it's actually capable of piercing. With guns however I doubt a majority of actors know how to check those..
@BeetleBuns2 жыл бұрын

Do the retractables (be it knives, or syringes) ever jam? I imagine they're inspected regularly.
@AntiComposite2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and people have gotten hurt that way. Retractables should be avoided if at all possible in favor of safer alternatives like CG (in film) or blocking (in theatre).
@sawcondeez692 жыл бұрын
He said in another video he doesn't use them for that reason.
@loverofteaandspice2 жыл бұрын
My brother has a retractable. Or well, a cheap two euro version or something he got ages ago. I have no idea how well the actual things work (or how dangerous they are), but that one had the tendency to jam at every fifth try or so. Quite a painful surprise when someone jabs a hard, pointy plastic object at you thinking it'll retract, only for it to jam. I remember that this thing caused quite a lot of bruises.
@IrishCaesar2 жыл бұрын
People have died from being stabbed by retractable blades on stage. They are not safe and should not be used. As the first commenter on here said, blocking is more than enough to sell the illusion. I've been part of many stage fights and choreographed many, and never once has it been necessary to use a retractable blade

no matter how you slice it, you’re a cut above others. i’d prefer the rubber knife over any of the others: i’d rather not take chances with any breaking points or retracting cavities. i can see the need for the real knives in closeups but unless the actor wears a metal plate like the last one i’m going to go with rubber over retractable ones
